Timing chain cover date

Featured Replies

Good evening.

Just a quick question that keeps bugging me.

I cannot find the build date for my CCZA engine.

The date on the timing chain cover is, I assume for the cover only, not the engine.

My car manufacturer date is 2012 by the VIN code.

Any advice welcome.

Quick thoughts, if you have access to a good scanner that could give you a report with dates for components and programs, or you can get build info from the VIN by paying a few euros to a chap on eBay (I don't have the link at the moment) or if you ask here (Superb forum perhaps) someone might be able to date your engine. number.

Your car manufacture date is on your car data pdf (which you have), but all that tells you about engine manufacture date is that it can't be later than that.

The VW CCZA engine was used in that many Brands/models i wouldn't think the age would be far off the build date of the car?

On my 2002 Octavia 1.8T 4x4 the engine build date was 4 weeks before the car build date.  I think my 2007 Fabia vRS was the same.

With JIT manufacture its very unlikely to be any more than that, I would have expected a matter of days.

To the OP, why does it matter to you?

Hi J.R.

I am going to look at the tensioner today, just for peace of mind, just thought a post might save me taking the wheel off and lining out, pretty chilly here!

My car build is around March 2012 and registered in May 2012.

Chain cover is 15/12/2011.

That looks like being when the car left the production line then and not when the engine was assembled.

What difference would 3 months 11 years ago make to your decision to look at the tensioner?

Do you think you will be safe waiting till the warmer weather next May if your engine was built 3 in May 2012? Or were there some production changes at that time?

@Jonnyhatesjazz70Have you had this car since new, or that long that you know the engine has not had work like a new chain and tensioner before you got it?

Check the car data pdf I gave you in PM convo. It said build date Dec 2011 from memory.

Do you know when chain and tensioner changed revisions?

I bought it at 39k 2 years ago and cannot get hold of the previous ocd owner. One thing is for sure, this lining has been off before, its had a dremel on one of the T25's. Will post pics after.

Just a personal thing, i would be leaving well alone if the car runs well.  & if not ragging it like it is a sports car.

It's just an easy check for peace of mind, fed up with the 2.0 tsi CCZA scare mongering. I have a spare bung just in case it breaks.

Said tensioner.

The bung was fine to put back in.

I can see and understand now why you wanted to know the engine build date, please ignore the above.

For the enlightenment of others what is the critical manufacturing date?

Hi J.R.

I don't know the exact, date I believe around March 2012 onwards for the latest revision according to my research online. But it varies of course.
