New Company Car Soon - Octy or Superb?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have the opportunity of getting a new company car (or car allowance) in the next few months. I am looking at the Octavia 2.0 TDI L&K (possibly with some of the extras you can get like 17", lowered suspension etc) and also the Superb Elegance 2.0 TDI (not sure if the manual or DSG).

So just looking for some ideas from you guys as to what might be the best of these? I will be going for it in November at the latest, so there may be improvements in spec before then. I do like the look of both cars but really like the standard of the specification in both. Superb look like a great deal and it is just at my limit for the P11D value.

I like my comfort and do a fair bit of motorway and A1 driving - like to go for it at times but 6 points at the moment!!

Is the DSG box worth the money? I like the idea of it but not sure what it is like day to day. Is is a tru manual when you want it to be?

Sorry, but I am too used my old X plate Octy 1.8T to know anything of this new technology!!

Thanks for any help or comments.

Cheers

couldnt run to the dsg myself but its worth every penny I reckon just as long as you dont plan to remap the car

Having driven both cars, and seeing as you drive mostly moorway and Aroad, would be the Superb "every time" for the refinement and the comfort on offer

The Superb just eats motorway miles and comes with lots more toys and loads of room

They octy is a much more modern looking and feeling car compared to the superb.

It's what I'd go for (and did)

Was looking at a new Superb today in the showroom and it was very nice. Loads of rear leg room if that is one of your considerations. Looked good on 17's and had a nice ride height (not sure if it was lowered or not).

Let us know what you decide!

The Octy has decent legroom and a huge boot too. Ok its not just as cavernous as the Superb but you get all the practicality of a hatch and all the latest Skoda niceties.

and also the Superb Elegance 2.0 TDI (not sure if the manual or DSG).
I've just gone through the same thoughts and unless I'm mistaken, you can't get the DSG on the Superb, only a tiptronic auto box.

Go drive one - I drove a 2 year old 2.0TD DSG Octy and was really impressed by the gearbox. It's more of a very smooth tiptronic box than a true manual, and of course there are no flappy paddle levers either (you can get these on selected Passat / Golf models), which might make it more like a manual.

I think it depends upon the miles you do and the type of roads you drive on. My wife and I tried the DSG on an Audi with the 2.0TDI engine a couple of times. It is certainly a nice auto, but whilst I'm sure it's great for urban driving and motorways it didn't feel right for our country lane driving style. I sometimes like to drop down a gear ahead of a bend, if you try that with the DSG it does a quick, sporty change (with an attempt to rev match), which wasn't as smooth as you would achieve with a manual box and not so cool if you have passengers! On country lanes we ended up leaving it in Sport mode and hoping for the best.

Also, I'm not sure I'd opt for 17" wheels if I did a lot of motorway and A1 driving, given the increase in noise and harsher ride. What are the benefits?

Superb+auto=relaxed

I had a Superb 1.9TDI Comfort before my current Octy. They're both great cars - the Superb is very relaxed, if a little wallowy on A roads. Rear legroom in the Superb is amazing and you get nice little touches like footwell lighting and so on which you don't get in the Octy.

I think the Octy 2.0TDI is quieter than the Superb engine though, and packs a hell of a punch. DSG gearbox is fantastic - just don't try any sudden exits from junctions. Octy rides very nicely and has the added practicality that you can put the rear seats down. It's not as relaxing as the Superb, but I've never regretted the change.

Think you'll be very happy in either - just a question of which suits your lifestyle better.

The Octy has decent legroom and a huge boot too. Ok its not just as cavernous as the Superb but you get all the practicality of a hatch and all the latest Skoda niceties.

Or the Octy estate if you really want the extra space.

DSG is nice.

I went for DSG on my next car, soon to arrive, strange thing with lease company though, speccing DSG reduced monthly maintenance payments making the manual and DSG cars the same price overall?? so I put other kit on up to my budget.

Thanks for the feedback and comments. Not really decided on either yet but I have plenty of time. I am split between the L&K Octy and the equivalent Superb (probably the 2.0TDI Comfort/Elegance). The Superb extras are pulling me a bit at the moment and with a kid on the way I think the extra comfort and space in the cabin might be a bonus, though the boot in the Octy seems to be bigger.

The question is over what I drive like whn no wife and kid in the car and which of the two would suit that best..I think the Octy would be best. Damn it is difficult but maybe a test drive of both models might sort out any questions.

Still, I am very glad I have this option at all as I don't have to pay for it...so really I can't complain with this kind of decision.

Next question....what about the wait until the 170BHP Diesel vrs comes along....this could be another option to look at/wait for!!

Cheers all.

Personally I think the Octy is better suited to a young family. It's not as wide as a Superb so you get a bit more space to manouvre babies etc out in those tight parking spaces. Also, the octy is a hatch so much more practical than a saloon.

the Octy It's not as wide as a Superb.

Farther-in-law, when he was looking between Oct'y and Superb, was concernd about width due to his drive going at an angle down the side of his house. After looking in the Tec Spec's, Wing mirror tip to wing mirror tip. The Superb is Very slightly narrower:eek: Also the mirrors on the Superb can be moved in:thumbup:

Going through the same process myself. Currently have BMW 320dSE Tourer company car. New FD has slashed everyone's monthly car budget by

Going through the same process myself. Have the Octy L&K and the Superb on my list for a new company car.

Am holdiing on pending more info on the forthcoming vRS Diesel (see another thread). But am tempted towards the Octy L&K Estate 140bhp Diesel for it's load-carrying ability and it's great spec (full leather etc.).

I could always have the L&K boosted to around 180bhp by Celtcic Tuning. Can anyone out there confirm that any software work by Celtic Tuning is genuinely not detectable by my local Skoda Dealer please?

With kids the tip to tip width is less relevant than the actual car width. The octy is still 4mm wider than the Superb but i'm refering more to opening doors in a tight parking space. Luxury car doors are generally bigger and need more space to open fully.

If you've got a baby on the way I'd definitely go for the Octy. One of the reasons I went back to an Octy after the Superb was because, although the boot on the Superb was huge, it wasn't as versatile as a hatchback. I can get childrens' bikes and all sorts in the Octy - not a hope in the Superb without completely dismantling them.

I don't think you need worry about the bike yet though unless you're competitive Dad:D

We went through exactly the same thought process over many months comparing exactly the same 2 cars.

My Wife covers about 30000 miles a year for work, we had been running a Mk 1Octy L&K Estate & had naturally assumed we would simply upgrade to the Mk 2 but she found the initial test drive very disapointing, it just didnt have the feel of the Mk 1. It incidentally had a DSG box which could sometimes in certain situations be less than smooth, especially changing at lower revs.

Our local dealer then said why not try the Superb as I guess he could see us heading away from Skoda so she borrowed one for a few hours & that decided her on the Superb Elegance 2.0 TDi.

We have only done 4500 Miles in it to date but we are conviced we made the right decision, its an absolute joy to drive on long journeys & has a real feel of quality about it, something the new L&K IMO lacked & the build quality is fantastic.

We have had one holiday already with the car & the boot just seems to swallow everything you try & load into it & you still have the option of Roof rails & a top box if that not enough.

I apreciate you are not paying for the car but a quick calculation of an L&K with Xenons, Sat Nav & a decent set of wheels added (all std on the Superb) & you are up to the price you will pay for the Superb, after some haggling we ended up paying £17995 on the road. The Superb also has so many more nice little touches that the Octy dosent, fold in mirrors, cat vision, lights under the mirrors that light up the ground around the car before you get in & also puddle lights in the bottom of the door, heated front & rear seats, aircon ducted to the back, the infamous brolly in the back door & a few other switches I havent sorted out yet. It also has rear parking sensors which Im not sure are std on the new L&K.

With a little one on the way I would have thought the extra room inside would be a bonus on long journeys, also with the big rear door it would be easier to fit the dreaded baby seat. It will also be harder for the little darling to kick the back of the front seats as it grows

As for the ride & handling its fantastic for long journeys & can also be chucked around quite vigerously & is very predictable, I can have quite a lot of fun in it & my other car is a 350 bhp Octy so you can guess how I drive !! The brakes are also excellent for a stock set up

Back to the DSG box, if you have to contribute at all to fuel note that the DSG knocks the mpg back somewhat.

I would suggest you try & get 1/2 day test drives in each to get a better idea of what suits you

Stuart

Spoke with a salesperson at Renshaw & Newsome yesterday. He said there will be a new Superb within 2 years, probably based on the current Passat. You may want to factor in the possibility of the car being superceded.

I understand the 2007 Octy L&K has the puddle lights in the mirrors, rear parking sensors are standard and I read somewhere that heated rear seats may be available (but I haven't seen this confirmed by Skoda).
