Can Running Lights Be Swtiched Off?

Featured Replies

Hi I have recently bought a 22 plate  SE (L) and had to cut a piece out of a partition to get it into my garage.  As its still quite tight I put a mirror on the back wall so I can see the nearside space between the partition and door.

Unfortunately as I enter the garage the running lights are so bright in the mirror I cannot see the space between door and partition,  it not too bad during the day but at night its impossible to see!

Phoned retailer who said I can switch them off and I said I had the light switch vertical and he said that was "Auto".  in my car it is off as it will not turn further clockwise so not good advice I think!!

It seems that if driving forwards or stoppped the running lights  are always on,  could someone confirm this and if they can be switched when driving into a garage explain how i can do it?

Thanks

Peter H

Don't believe the DRLs can be switched off

How about putting on the sidelights as you park. Nothing like as bright as DRL,s then.

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry - still learning everything!

Did not realise I could put on sidelights without DRL's.

I have also installed a laser parking pointer a few years ago and will reposition it on the drivers side to line up withe the bonnet/wing gap if I canot get to see the mirror more easily.

(ATM trying to rip old CD's into FLAC formatso I can play them fron USB Stick!)

Peter H!

Day light / Daytime Running lights aka DRL,s are for Daytime / Daylight and even if they do not go off with the Side Lights or Sidelights and Headlights they have to dim and be less bright.

Thanks,  I just tested the above and its easier to see an judge gap,  still not easy,  but is Ok

Thanks

Can’t you just reverse in?

Have I missed something🤔

Yes I could but its a bit close!

The car is about 20cm wider than my old car!

I have never driven a DSG until a week ago!

The entrance floor has a 30 degree short slope and I have a dsg which builds up the power and launches forward as it gets up the slope!

but will try reversing when I have got some more experience!

Something is wrong with your technique or the car if it's launching you up a slope!

My comment should be treated as a little subjective as I am new to DSG driving.

The word launch was probably over the top but without touching the accelerator there is a short delay before the power drops after the front wheels are on the level floor.

To reduce the risk in the near future I will reset my laser pointer to align with the wing/bonnet gap

Thanks

Ah ok, just need to be on the brakes a little earlier. The car will creep forward unless you control it with the brake pedal

I was given a sucker attached to an amber disc, this stuck on the headlamp as I only had a dipped beam (no sidelights)

Perhaps you could rig up something similar.

@gumdropcould you explain what you mean about only have dipped beam no sidelights, and what is the amber disc about?

Hi,

I have now resolved my problem, I had a mirror to line up my nearside wheels which was too low because the running or head lights would blind me and couldn't see the arrows on the cardboard fixed the back of the cupboard. I raised up the mirror so I am no longer dazzled.

A picture paints a thousand words!

I had an old car, no sidelights, I think the disc was an orange filter used in the old days to improve vision in fog.

When I drove into my unlit garage I stuck the disc to the offside headlight to reduce glare.

It was a faff, I bought another car! (with sidelights)

Must have been something like pre 1965 then. sidelights have been a legal requirement since then.
