Squeaking ONLY over speed bumps & potholes

Featured Replies

Hi All, changed outer tie rod still squeaky ONLY over bumps also tried silicone spray on all bushes. With better light & further investigation I have supplied a photo of as far as I can tell the only sorry looking bit of rubber is the bush on the (wishbone) or lower arm. Would you say the wear in the photo is enough to give a squeak?20240329_124849.thumb.jpg.e04feae0b2df97258debc9a52bee42a9.jpg

The photo shows what appears to be metal to metal contact, what more could you want to see?

Or am I mistaken?

Rubber to metal bonded bushes do not squeak unless mounting bolts are loose, metal to metal contact through excessive joint articulation is what squeaks.

Hi Close crop,🙂

Mine started doing this a while ago, I changed the following:

Lower wishbones and bushes to original OEM spec. (after trying Poly bushes - which were truly awful due to the level of vibration)

Drop Links.

Anti Roll Bar bushes.

It is still doing it - my conclusion is now the top mounts, which are on the to do list.

Hi SJFisher67, Sorry your a fellow suffer!

I will check the top mount, only one side for me currently.

I was on the net earlier looking for a new wishbone but as yet haven't purchased. Visited other information centres most point towards a new ball joint on the wishbone which I purchased a few weeks ago but due to the little play on the wheel when at 9 & 3 wiggle and none at 12 & 6 I changed the tie rod which got rid of the slight play but not the squick!?

I suppose similar to our health problems when we go to Doctors they first consider the most common cause first, so since I have a new ball joint I might as well fit it and see!

Forgot to list ball joints on my previous post - as I changed these too!

Yet she still squeaks over bumps.

Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem mate?

I have the same squawking issue on my 2012 Fabia. I’ve changed the anti roll bars and bushes, and it’s still making a noise!

Next on the agenda is ball joints and wishbone bushes.

Did the new top mounts solve your problem? Cheers.

Same has started on my 2015 Fabia, driving me crazy. Haven't began working through the list of possibilities yet though.

So.... during the last couple of weeks I changed the lower wishbones (complete with all bushes and bolts etc.) Whilst there I spreayed some silicone spray into the top of the suspension turrets around the top mounts - like a fair bit! - low and behold for now the car has STFU!

What discovered with this "size" of VW Group car - in my case, a 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS 6MT, is, if the car makes the odd or even frequent suspension noises, for a longish period in time, after I've had it up in the air on 4 jack stands, just for brake servicing and/or swopping Summer/Winter wheels/tyres, the suspension becomes free from any noises.

Top mountings, hum, in this age/version of car, the top mounts are just located/sitting in, an inverted cup and have a large washer, ie retainer under the top nut - to avoid these top mountings from escaping if you ended up doing something completely crazy when driving that car. Earlier and later versions have the top mountings bolted onto a flat area of the body.

I've tended to consider that it might be a smart idea to remove the top nut on both sides, then lift the car up enough to create a space between the top mounting rubbers, and then get some talc powder in there to act as a lubricant, then lower the car down, fit the large washer/retainer plates back on and new self locking nuts - and see if that quietens the front end down.

Note:- I replaced the front struts, springs, bearings and top mountings on my wife's 2015 Polo last year, and this winter it does, for the first few speed bumps when cold, make these noises, the new top mountings were sourced from VW and they didn't look like there was any "treatment" applied to the outer surfaces that contact these inverted cups, and there is no instruction to apply anything like talc powder to them before fitting them - but there again, why or what made VW Group dump this form of top mounting when they replaced this version of these cars- maybe having to deal with too many complaints/rework while under warranty.

HI firstly I could not get into my account and we were doing major house renovation. I solved my problem with silicone spray. So about every 3 months. Hope this helps

Thanks for replying @keeponrunning . Silicone spray where?

On the rubber bushings mainly in the wishbone this was where the noise was coming from. But it's such a quick job and prolongs the life of everything rubber I spray everything rubber.🤗

^^^ Fair enough, but i use Red Rubber Grease where appropriate and reachable. Brake / seals / boots, O-Rings etc etc.

I'd imagine rubber grease will last longer on the bushes (than silicone spray)?

Yes I tried red grease but it was time consuming for me personally but yes it did the job 😎
