1.0 tsi manual. Engine flush at service, yes or no?

Featured Replies

Hi. The (Skoda main) dealer has asked if we want the engine flushed at our service coming up. I've said yes. £45 plus VAT.

Should we get this done? The car was very low mileage (7000) when we got it. Registered Nov 2019. 1.0 tsi manual with now 17000 on the clock. It had a major (same Skoda main dealer) service last year when we bought it.

It's running very well other than a slight light clunk as you engage/lift off the clutch into 2nd gear (I did note that on another engine on one of these) and there's been no change over the 12 months we've had it.

Thanks for your thoughts on engine flushes: yes or no?

£54 completely wasted.

As said. Money flushed down the drain. A £5 can of flush that isn't needed. And they with to charge you £50 for opening it.....

So there's literally no point in ever getting this done?

No small benefits or reasons for doing it?

Thanks both for getting back.

Hi. Yeah I can see that VW themselves don't even recommend it. Thank you 🙂

I used to like/bother to add a "gentle" brew of petrol engine flusher from Comma into the oil a week before changing the oil and filter, I used to do that at every other oil change - but back then our cars were running decent annual mileages and owned for 13 years. Since 2013 when we replaced our cars, I've stopped doing that. Was it beneficial, I can't say, did it make me feel good about doing it, yes.

There was a product sold under the Forte name that Ford and Vauxhall used to push when paying a dealership to service cars under warranty, even VW I seem to remember pushed that while paying for a service under warranty - curiously, when prepaying ie buying a service package from a motor group (not a VW Group add on), to support a new VW Polo 1.2TSI for it warranty period, none of that used, hum?

The only time I would consider an engine oil flush might be necessary would be if service intervals had been severely neglected - or the oil had become contaminated in some way - and would use normal lubricating oil for the purpose.

Low mileage in a car may not be as good for the car as you think, so do make sure you have an annual engine oil & filter change and also other items on the car checked and changed as required on a time or mileage basis, whichever is the sooner.

If the car is driven more often now and for longer journeys that will help the car battery with charging but don't wait for any messages or lights to tell you the battery is low in charge and certainly not hesitation or delay in the engine starting because the battery is low.  Many batteries from this sort of car year may be prematurely changed when all they needed was previous timely preventative charging with an appropriate charger maintainer.

Good luck.
