Steering rack inner joints

Featured Replies

The last advisory on my MOT was for play in steering rack inner joints.  I’d like to get this sorted soon, but I don’t know what’s needed.  Is it best to replace the steering rack and, if so, which one do I need?  My searches have come up with two options: sensor type, or non-sensor type.

I’d be looking at a refurb replacement as I’m not paying Skoda prices.

Or can I just get the worn joints replaced?

Car is a 2011 Greenline MkII 1.2 diesel.

Appreciate any help.

I'd be AMAZED if the inner joints really are worn, it's one of those 'gimme' jobs that most owners can't check. You certainly don't need a new rack!

FYI my Fabia is 24 years old and is still on the original inner joints, I changed everything else when I bought it in 2016.

Not exactly hard to check, just grab the tie rod and give it a pull in and out, feel for a knock. You change the joint with the rod "drumstick" as a lot of places call them. They're not expensive, but it's worth paying that bit more for a good brand. It can be a bit of a mare to change then, even with the right size crowsfoot socket, and the car will want re-tracking, so I generally get somewhere to do them for me.

Thanks Sepulchrave and StevesTruck.  I’m not competent mechanically, so your opinions are really helpful.  I’ll get a quote for replacing the joints from a local independent that I’ve used before.

Before you buy any tie rods slide the gaiter off and shake the wheel at 3 and 6 o clock, you should see the ball and socket joint jump about. It could be the bush in the rack worn instead. You will see the rack move about if it's that.
