2016 Fabia estate 1.4tdi front wipers

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm looking for a bit of inspiration for the problem with the front wipers on my misses fabia. I went to work in it the other day it was fine no probs wipers worked. Then yesterday wifey used it and no wipers?!? Of course she blames me 🙄 but I dunno why they won't work? If you activate the stalk for 1 swipe, intermittent, speed 1 or 2 nothing happens, not front wash either. Back wiper works fine? I've checked the fuses all ok and am gonna be looking at the motor tomorrow, is there anything else I should look at???

Stalk, relay(?), if front washer is on same fuse as wipers and you are sure all the fuses are OK then stalk seems the place to start.  I don't know if any of the computer programs interfere with the wipers and washer but I always suspect computer programs, good job they're not driving the car or take over any driver functions or then where would we all be. 😁

ETA: just in case it's the same problem as with my wife's 2015 Fabia or you need to take the stalk off. -

I think they use dielectric grease type protection on the connectors inside the steering column. Dirt builds up as it thins out and starts shorting connections. If you have a scan tool maybe it will show a short etc

I had similar problems with wipers. Sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

I fixed ours by pulling the stalk forward which exposes a gap. With a straw connected to Electrical Contact cleaner spray.  I gave it a blast a few times and that sorted it. I was expecting a short term fix but it's lasted coming on 3 years 😄

I think mine was more another VW factory  balls-up, but I'm biased I don't like VW products.

  1. I managed to plug it in today to read any codes and got this back...... Is this likely to be the relay that's at fault, the one that's soldered into the BCM????20240704_145528.thumb.jpg.255ad0f616fdd1bb596b8b74c33d22a7.jpg

Fuse 8 in the fuseholder under the bonnet is likely to be the problem.

I did check that as a easy go to fix but it seemed fine, I'll have another look & swap it for another one

Nope, its not the fuse, been out & replaced it with a new one. theres current going through there as I've checked it with a multimeter?????

Next thing then is to check that gets to pin 73 of the black 73-way connector on the BCM. It's a red/yellow wire.

Sorry Breezy Pete,

I'm used to Land Rover diagnostics (having had 3 in the past) and not really delved into the Skoda,  is the BCM the one under the drivers side behind the fuse box & can you get to it easy enough to test, having 3 herniated discs I'm struggling getting in tight spaces 🙄

Yes, that sounds like where I'd expect it to be. No idea how easy/difficult access is, sorry.

Righty-ho, I'll have a go and report back

Bloody Hell!!!

Access is virtually non-exsistant (well for me anyway at 6'5 & 18st) I managed to unclip the BCM from its housing but there isn't enough wiggle room to pull it down without disconnecting the black plug. Is the red arrowed wire the one you mean and if I test it unplugged cause I can't get around the back of it whilst it is plugged in, would cause me more probs or not please?wiring2024a.png.bf61e99d0f49a8ee860936f421fdfe25.png

Yes, that looks like the right wire, I expect. Test it for 12V unplugged, as shown in photo

Thanks for your help so far, I'm gonna leave that till tomorrow now as contorting myself under the dash wasn't a pleasant experience.

No problem, I quite understand, even though I'm a lot smaller. Got any children you could invite to help or coerce?

Right, after a struggle,  I've managed to test that pin and I do get 12v from it. So there is power going in.

Strange. That seems in direct contradiction to the fault code above.

Even if the relay is faulty, that code doesn't make sense to me, if the supply to relay contact is present.

  • Author

Hmmm, I might take out the BCM and open it up and have a look at the relay see if that gives anything up. If the power went into it but the relay was toast and constant 'open circuit' would it not give that fault? I'm only guessing as electrics aren't really my strong point, I know basics but 😕

Before that check your scan tool program is up to date for your car and that it's suitable for your car model and year, both can throw up problems with reports.
