Does anyone else here have a 300k+ miles superb?

Featured Replies

What hasn't broken yet in your car?

My mechatronics unit is still original at 309k miles. Anyone have a unit that lasted longer?

The flywheel springs snapped at 280k and also took out the shaft. Both flywheel and clutch pack were replaced.

I've just been told I need a gearbox bush mount for engine stabilisation. That's lasted from the factory 309k miles . 4 hour labour to get subframe off and everything.

The turbo has never had issues. Examined at 270k

Neither the engine (CFGB diesel) Compression test 40k miles ago at 270k miles showed 26 psi across all cylinders.

DPF is still from factory. Had 1 "clean" service from injector gun. But it takes more effort to complete a regen cycle now and much more smoke + smell. Having to use a Carista obd to manually trigger regen at time of my choosing and using vag pdf app to monitor all the data plus only regen on the motorway as it can no longer complete a cycle in the town without the cabin being choked with fumes

EGR died at approx 190k, no emissions fix

Throttle valve at 150k, had egr nozzle rotated per skoda recall instructions

Door looms lasted 250k before both front doors started breaking, requiring intermittent fixing since.

Surprisingly my 2 rear shock absorbers from factory are still fine at 309.

Front shocks and springs died at 298 and 300

Back Springs / all 4 arms (every 150k it seems to last, so will be on 3rd set of arms soon) / bushes / droplinks / bearings etc obviously dies as you drive.

Current ABS module has lasted 250k miles and still working

Starter motor still from factory.

Alternator from factory died at 200k

All door locks / boot hinges still factory

All power steering still factory

My columbus still works. Just always had annoying problem where if my phone is connected to Bluetooth and I make a call when the columbus is either off or I'm not playing music through Bluetooth, no sound at all unless engine is fully shut for 5+ mins to reset connection. So I always make sure I play music on Bluetooth until u hear sound before I make a phone call

Aircon compressor died at about 150k or 7 years of age of car.

Serviced (minor interim minor major) never oil light before service every 9400 miles or less at dealership initially then at VW specialist garage. DSG oil service every 37.6k miles /every 4th service or less. Car has about 3 MOT equivalent checks and 4 services a year. So it's checked about as comprehensively as you can get.

Interesting summary of issues, fair old mileage (my 2014 4x4 estate on 86k lol).

What model and year is yours ?

I think I saw on Facebook someone selling an estate that had done 650k miles, mainly airport runs from Yorkshire to London on a daily basis.

If maintained they should keep going for many years and miles.

I guess when you look at your mileage and the parts/issues its all relative to wear and tear ?

2012 Skoda Superb 3T2 Elegance 170CR diesel CFGB 2.0

I'd like to think I've done as much as possible as early as possible to maintain it as long as possible. I was astounded the front springs / shocks lasted close to 300k from the factory. But I try and dodge every pothole and brake for every speed bump / badly surfaced roads. I've got complaints from passengers before but I ignore them lol don't care if they don't tip me. I crawl around estates with bad roads when it's just me in the car. And I live near a motorway and commute into the city where I start taking passengers so everything is always gently warmed up before I start working.

I think over a lifetime of the car, driving habits and maintenance really shows itself.

2011 Superb Estate 2.0 CFFB 6-speed manual. 303 000km.

I've had the car since 2015. It had 132 000km on the clock.

Flywheel started to make noise at 180k km. Got the flywheel+clutch replaced.

DPF washed just under 300k km.

Original turbo

Original starter

Original alternator

Replaced battery 2017, 177 000km

Replaced alternatorbelt tensioner

Replaced 2x timing belt kit (third one just ordered)

Replaced front+rear shocks and springs

Replaced all wheel bearings. Front left two times

Remaped 171 bhp/394Nm.

Avarage consumption per 100km after 142 000km is 5.04 liters. Calculated from the refuelings.

At summer time I get easily 4.0 l / 100km.

Going to keep the car to the bitter end.

Now the rising threat is RUST.

Totally agree, maintenance pays dividends long term and driving habits can save a lot of wear and tear.  Its a machine at the end of the day and if its abused by crashing over speed bumps and pot holes and stretched service intervals then it will eventually pay you back with problems !

I'm exactly the same, hate all the speed bumps, often have folk tailgating while I crawl over them.   Sounds a nice well maintained car you have, mine is the 140 CFFB which has been more than adequate.  I thought about a remap but if it isn't broke don't fix it...!

So, I'm sure I read somewhere or maybe I asked one of the dealership mechanics when I used to go there, that there is an actual difference between the 140 / 170. I mean the engine code is different, and some other stuff may have been too. So it wasn't as simple as, skoda deliberately mapped the 170 down electronically, there may be some hardware differences too.

The other thing I do, or rather don't do, is I never dry steer, and I don't mount kerbs. I simply avoid parking anywhere tight, avoid three point turns by reversing round a corner, literally have reversed down the entire length of an L shaped cul-de-sac before.

That's probably saved the steering component a lot over time. Sometimes I see people's tyres randomly move stopped at traffic lights and I just think "what are you doing man"

Sounds like you take good care and track everything on your car too. Cracking stuff.

I sometimes forget not everyone here lives in the UK. 303k km into miles is only 188k miles. In km mine is now 498005 km. So nearly 500k km for people on the continent

I'm not 100% sure either on that but I expect it is largely down to the map and maybe some things like injectors, fuel pressure etc ?  I could get mine re-mapped up to 170ish but then after near 8 years of ownership I'm quite used to the 140 and never felt it underpowered.

A pal had a diesel re-mapped and not long after had turbo failure and a £2k bill, co-incidence maybe....

I'm surprised my model (Tour de France 4x4) wasn't offered as standard with the 170 as it would be quite an attractive model when new.

Yep, I'm the same, never dry steer and very cautious of having to mount kerbs etc.  I have just had the 4 wheels refurbished a few months back so I'm even more careful to avoid wrecking the job !

Its away for its MOT this morning so will see what that brings...😱

I used to have a 2012 Elegance GreenLine II from new and took it to 230,000 miles (no longer have the car since Dec 2023).

The reliability and economy was outstanding. Nothing major went wrong. I couldn't have been more pleased overall.

All shocks done around 120k

Single injector failure around 180k

Replacement clock spring

A rear anti-roll bar

Driver's heated base (failed twice within 80k)

Blower fan (easy DIY repair for £80)

Otherwise I can't think of anything else. I'll update the list if I remember more.

It was serviced and maintained at the Skoda main dealer throughout its life. 90% of my miles were for a long daily commute on dual carriageways and motorways.

I have a 2012 Superb with a CFFB 2.0 170cr that has done 170,000 miles and that is climbing at the rate of 80,000 a year now.

I bounty it with 80k on the clock and it had full s/history, I service it every 10k religiously and it still drives really nicely.

jobs done so far.

front suspension refresh, new shocks, springs, strut tops, lower ball joint and track rod ends at 140,000 miles

rear springs and shocks were replaced at the same time at the fronts

all of that really transformed the way the car drives, so much smoother.

the engine, turbo and all ancillaries are original, and it still gives nearly 60mpg on a run.

dsg is original and has its oil changed every 40k, flywheel is a bit rattly these days so that will need doing soon.

wheels were replaced because of pothole and laquer damage, I put a set of passat CC turbine wheels on and it looks a lot nicer now.

one of the rear light clusters has a leak, in order to get round this I have drilled a 2mm hole right at the bottom of the light cluster, the heater fan needed replacing about 6 months ago at a cost of £50

i use the car as a taxi, it spends every day on either the motorway or dual carriageway with a small amount of town driving.

The Columbus unit was replaced a long time ago with an android head unit with car play, the steering wheel has been replaced with a 3 spoke sports one that has flappy paddles, next mod will be to swap the front seats for a pair of A8 sports seat that I pick up in a few weeks time

Is it a diesel? I wonder what the difference is between CFFB and CFGB, as mine is also 12 reg 170 horses.

How do you only get mostly motorway / dual carriageway as a taxi lol? Do you work out of an airport or something? Mine is a city rank, so I only really get motorway miles if I'm driving home or I drive for an out of town job, which I do at every possible opportunity.

That flywheel if left unchecked will eventually shatter because a spring will break. But it can rattle for quite a while, like over 10k miles. My mechanic detected it, but said the noise was intermittent. But it broke 5k miles after he detected it. I assume it was rattling for 5k before he founded it. I was advised to just leave it until it broke. If you want to preserve your clutch pack, you'll not want to leave it. Because when mine shattered, it took out that mounting shaft that comes with the clutch pack, so both was replaced. But my clutch pack had 100k more miles than yours at that point with more city driving, so no great loss.

I'm interested in what you replaced the columbus with. Can you link me what you bought? And if you replace the colombus, can you retrofit rear reversing cameras on your new unit? I'd be interested in that.

If you got a new steering wheel with flappy paddles, does that work well with the dsg manual mode? So that means you can either use the stick, or the flappy paddles?

I personally don't find the dsg manual mode is always smooth. So a lot of times, what I do is push it to the left to hold gear, and pull back to the right when I know the car will upshift after I put it back into D mode. Or sometimes when I'm at the point between gear ratios, pushing the dsg stick to the left will trigger a downshift. But I do those things because I know how the dsg will react.

Yours is about 6 months newer than mine, the engine codes also denote a build period CFFB - CFGB - CFHB and so on mines a 170 diesel

i do mainly long distance school runs, nhs transport and airport transfers. My school run is about 150 miles per day and of that about 15 miles is A road the rest is dual carriageway/motorway so by the time it's warmed up I'm just getting up to cruising speed.

the head unit is an xtrons unit.IMG_8840.thumb.jpeg.fac1bfc9deb46f73a6db55846a6802c0.jpeg

It's not bad, I've had to do some searching about to get it set up the way I wanted but it's reliable and has CarPlay and looks factory fitted, all the steering wheel controls work on it as well.

yes you can add cameras, however no one does a handle with a built in camera for the 2012 cars, they do one for the later cars but it won't fit the earlier, I've also got a front camera to go on as well, a job for the summer,

the steering wheel is now fitted but the paddles aren't working currently, I'm still trying to figure if it need an adaptation to the body control module in order to tell it that they are there, once I know I will update you

i know what you mean about the DSG not being smooth at times, my other car is a 5 series BMW with the 8 speed ZF box in it and that is as smooth as silk but a proper automatic

when your springs on the dual mass were failing did it make a chattering noise whilst running?

Wow you must be making a mint doing those kinds of jobs. No such luck for me.

What do you mean by "no cameras on the handles for the 2012"? Are you referring to where the rear reversing cam would go? Where / how are you going to install yours then?

Where / how are you going to fit the front cameras? Does that have to be linked to your new xtrons unit?

So, when my flywheel springs were failing, the noise was only intermittent, I never heard anything personally (I always drive with windows up and aircon on too), or I didn't know how to recognise it. But the mechanic said sometimes that happens, it might make noises for a while then stop, but if it ever starts to, it's on the way out sooner or later, in my case sooner.

I have a 2013 Superb 170 elegance estate, 158,000 now, the only things I have ever changed

DSG temp sensor

door loom

rear track rods

only one set of brake pads (disks are original)

several broken springs!

and that’s it.

i’m surprised, it’s been a great car but now in a dilemma. Do I keep it for a couple of years but if I do will need the following

front and rear suspension (shocks, springs and maybe arms)

Brake disks / pads front and rear

rear boot electric strut

drivers seat just starting to wear through now, will need stitching.

not Sure on DSG, running ok but not sure if there is a risk of something breaking (any thoughts welcome)

Stereo speakers sound horrible

wheels look terrible

I am reluctant to spend circa £20k on a replacement, happy to spend some on wear and tear items but the DSG is a concern and I believe if that goes it’s going to cost. Nothing obvious but I’m worried.

any thoughts?

I completely refreshed the front suspension on my superb for less than £500, that was.

shocks all round

Lower ball joints

track rod ends

strut top mounts and bearings

wheel bearings

all of it was brand new and came via eBay, the only additional cost was 4 wheel alignment at £70 and it all made such a difference to the way the car drove.

as for the DSG we have recently picked up a second hand gearbox for £395, again the only thing we then did was put fresh fluid and a filter in it and it was good to go.

i may have a drivers seat in black leather available shortly, I have just acquired a set of A8 luxury front seats that will be going into my 2012 elegance estate

On the facelift superb estate 13-16 the rear camera is sold as part of the rear tailgate handle but the prefacelift cars have a slightly different handle and it's a slightly smaller aperture so the later handles do not fit the earlier cars and so I have to find a camera that will sit between the handle and rear number plate light but still look factory.

the front one will sit on the bumper un the recess just under the front number plate, my biggest issue currently is getting the wiring through the bulkhead into the engine bay.

the rear light clusters are known for leaking, in order to get round this the "bodge" is to drill a 2mm hole in the lower left hand corner of the rear light cluster

Most people who do a reversing camera retrofit on the earlier car just cut out the aperture to suit the camera.

With the exception of the DSG gearbox yes, all done on my drive. Aside from an 7mm Allen key for the brake caliper and coil spring compression tools I didn't need any other special tools.

Great job 😀

  • 9 months later...

Sort of dredging up old topic, but still relevant I guess.

14 elegance estate 2.0 TDi DSG 4x4

I haven’t owned it that long, only 6 months but I know it’s had 2 previous owners, and has been a decent distance commuter car. It’s currently got 295,000km on it and I know the following has been done

DMF - started to rattle

Front right window regulator

Push button for KESSY

One set of brake pads

There’s bound to be more but that’s all I can see from the service history I have which is fairly comprehensive and majority done at dealers.

It does have some foibles. Neither front drivers seat heaters work, Columbus unit is a bit slow at times (on my list of things to replace), one of the thermostats (probably DSG) on its way. It’s also scratched to buggery all round due to previous owners kids/dogs (meh)

Other than that, everything works, it drives nice and does what I need it to do. I didn’t pay much for it, so I didn’t have high expectations, but it’s excelled so far. Contemplating a tune but certainly doesn’t need one - would rather not upset turbo or DPF which currently are original, and I can still get sub 4.0l/100km (somewhere around 72 mpg if my calculations are right).

It’ll get a Cambelt etc at 300, just had a new set of tyres fitted - far bigger than factory, which has improved the ride no end.

Mine is now at 235,000 miles (378,000 kms) and it’s still plodding along.

I changed the dsg oil today and carried out a major service on it.

It’s now starting to sound like one or two lifters might be going a bit soft as it’s a bit clacky in the mornings, that said it’s still giving over 60mpg on a run with the a/c on so I can’t complain.

Mods I have done:

Audi A8 comfort front seats (so much better than the standard superb seats)

Passat CC turbine alloys

10” android stereo

Octavia vrs three spoke wheel with flappy paddles

It’s now starting to sound like one or two lifters might be going a bit soft as it’s a bit clacky in the mornings, that said it’s still giving over 60mpg on a run with the a/c on so I can’t complain.

Mods I have done:

Audi A8 comfort front seats (so much better than the standard superb seats)

Passat CC turbine alloys

10” android stereo

Octavia vrs three spoke wheel with flappy paddles

How did you get on with swapping the seats and seat airbags talking to each other? I don’t find my seats uncomfortable but I came from a Ute previously so I’m used to something 1 step away from a church pew 🤣

The A8 seats came from a car of a similar age to my Skoda, as they are both VAG products I found the wiring was pretty much the same and so it was a straight swap.

I had to make up new multiplugs as they didn’t match but that wasn’t too hard
