HELP PLEASE REGARDING A CAM BELT CHANGE

Featured Replies

Hello,  can you please advise whether I need to have the Water Pump changed when the Cam Belt is installed? Skoda Fabia 5dr Hat 1.o Mpi 75ps SE. Looking forward to hearing from someone.   Thank you.

Welcome.

Pretty sure you do not.  Nothing wrong with the water pump is there?

But then do you need the cam belt replaced?

I will ask a mod to move your post to the Fabia Mk3 section.

Thank you so much for your response.   It was just that I was told by one Garage that the Cam Belt wasn't run with the Water Pump and another said it was.  I'm an OAP and the difference in price is £200.  Am also female and don't want to be ripped off.  Hope what I've written makes sense?

Not sure with the MPI - but believe that it is only the TDIs that run the water pump off the cambelt.

@Bunnykins  Makes perfect sense.

How many miles has the car done?

Save lots more money and do not have the cambelt replaced.

Ask those advising that you do if they are aware of the VW Group / Skoda Recommendations, Guidelines or Schedule for changing it?

?

Is it a mechanic / technician you spoke to or someone on a Service Desk?

Hiya.  The car has 19,500 on the clock.  I was just given a Quote late last year by the Service Desk when paying for the MOT and service of £471.  When I phoned last week someone else quoted me £671 and said that the two have to be replaced.  I then visited the Garage and spoke to the chap on the Service Desk and asked him to look into the difference of the cost.  He informed me that the cam belt on my car doesn't have the water pump attached.  Hope you can understand my concern?  What I don't is my engine to be ruined if the water pump should've been replaced as well.

There are a couple of Techs on here that can maybe assure you and say if you are best to even have the cam belt and tensioner replaced.

Hopefully they will respond. @Crasher or @ApertureS

The reasoning behind replacing the water pump at the same time as the cambelt on TDIs is because the pump is driven by the belt - and the TDI pump was prone to a relatively short lifespan.

If the belt  was to be replaced without doing the pump, the belt would need to be replaced again in the eventuality of the pump failing shortly after. This is not the case with TSIs (not certain about MPI)

Thank you again for your responses.  And thank you Ootohere for giving me the details of the Techs.  I will get in touch.  It's not that I  don't believe what you all say, I still need reassurance.   I'm a real worrier. I do appreciate the inputs.

Welcome to the forum,

if you can supply me your reg I can give you a definitive answer.

as I’m on my phone I can’t be sure of if you have your car details in your profile so can’t check.

Older 1.0 engines had the water pump driven by the belt, newer 1.0/1.2 engines have the water pump driven by the opposite end of the exhaust camshaft.

the water pump belt does not need changing on these newer setups but the normal cambelt does.

Take note that if you have a much much newer 1.0/1.2/1.4 with ACT (active cylinder technology) don’t expect much change from £1000 for a belt change.

It is a 1.0 mpi.  So non turbo.   2016.  No GPF.

Morning Ootohere.  Thank you once again.   You've clarified the query for me.  I hadn't contacted the links you'd sent me, was going to do that this morning.   My worrying is over.  Have a great weekend.
