Handbrake Clicking Help

Featured Replies

Anyone got any ideas? Noticed this when leaning into the glovebox tonight - metallic clicking when pushed to one side.

Bit concerned as my driveway is on a slope! There isn’t any excess movement, handbrake works perfectly, but would be nice to know if it’s possible teeth/pawls slip or anything. The car has been into Skoda for a new rear caliper last week, so wondering if it’s anything to do with that.

Doesn't sound right I'd call them and get it back in. Tell them it didn't make the noise before they did the work on it.

I’m not majorly fussed as I know the parking pawls will hold it (and I doubt there’s any issues with it) but peace of mind and all that.

I also don’t really have much faith in the dealer either, if I’m honest - only bled the one corner rather than the whole system (I know it’s okay to do this, but come on they had the car in for over a week!). Not to mention it was in for a vibration noise from the Soundaktor and after the first look they had, the tech lost some of the clips and did a bit of sound cladding wrong…

I reckon I’ll get my VAG indie to take a look when I get them to flush the brakes - I’m about done with the dealer lol.

I think the auto-adjustment system or the hand-brake rachet mechanism sounds as though it has an issue.

Funny you mention the glovebox. My handbrake was making a similar noise shortly after pulling away, as if something was sticking and then 'resetting'.

It turned out to be nothing to do with the handbrake. I had previously installed a Sonosmart reverse camera. There is a hvac flap behind the infotainment system above the glovebox. The flap was getting stuck on the canera wiring harness. The noise was traveling and sounded like it was coming from the handbrake. I rearranged the wiring and problem solved.

This is definitely the handbrake, but I know exactly what you’re on about - I went to great lengths on my Leon to avoid getting any dashcam cables near it.

For the future - cloth tape and zip ties work a treat!

Yes, to me something doesn’t sound/feel quite right. I know it’s going nowhere (auto) but could do without having to leave the car on the gearbox pawls at any point!
