The cost of ownership.

Featured Replies

A quiet Friday at work so did a few calcs based on my 4 year ownership ( almost to the day ) of my 2016 1.6Tdi Estate.

Days Owned                                                          1460

Maintenance, Service, Spares, Repairs            £7220.48

Insurance                                                              £1568.73

Road Fund Licence                                              £80.00

Total ( excl fuel )                                                  £8869.21

Distance Driven ( Miles / km )                           100,608 / 160,973

Av. Miles / km per day                                        68.9 / 110.26

Fuel used ( gallons /  ltr )                                   1725.33 / 7843.52

Av. mpg / km/ltr                                                  58.3 / 20.52

Cost per day ( excl fuel )                                     £6.07

Maintenance includes fitting of a new clutch pack & flywheel + transmission service. The rest being usual tyres, wipers, servicing etc all of which was carried out by an indy.

Dull I know, but something to do whilst waiting for a courier to turn up, albeit a day later than arranged.

Not dull at all, keeps it all in perspective.

Probably another £8 to £9 per day on fuel.

Sounds a bit pricey but I'm a mechanic so I suppose labour would be a big chunk of that which I don't take into account.

Two timing belt and water pump changes plus replacement clutch pack and flywheel was where the most of the labour was.

Have bought 12 tyres, ( 8 Dunlop SportMaxx & most recently 4 Michelin Cross climate 2's) .

I've changed the brakes & discs all round and the rear shocks, so saved a couple quid on labour there.

You forgot to add the cost of depreciation…☹️

Ha ha yes indeed, however most cars will depreciate over time so I missed that off.

The way things were with the 2nd hand car market 4 years ago, I could have sold it for more a year later with 25k extra miles.

I've no clue what it's worth now though. Out of interest I plugged the details into webuyanycar and they refused to price it and pointed me toward Motorway who valued it at about £3500 iirc.
