Front pads and discs.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I need to replace my front pads and discs. All I want to know is, are there preffered brands most go for? Below is the following brands i have prices for. I have prices for Genuine Škoda too and are (unsurprisingly) the most expensive.

Discs:

Eicher

Brembo

Pagid

Bosch

ATE

Pads:

Eicher

Brembo

Pagid

Bosch

TRW

Pagid STRT

Many Thanks,

Ross.

The Kodiaq MK1 uses TRW front brake calipers for all the front brake disc sizes, ie. 312x25mm, 314x30mm, 340x30mm.

TRW GDB1956 front brake pads fit the front brake calipers on the 312x25mm front brake discs.

TRW GDB2114 front brake pads fit the front brake calipers on the 314x30mm and 340x30mm front brake discs.

I’ve used Pagid and rate them highly.

However I did find out recently they were struggling financially and since bought by Euro Car Parts. Make of that what you will.

Big fan of TRW, I've never had a problem with them and they seem to last well.

Hi @Carlston do you have same info for the rears, I'm coming up for those soonish.

I put Bosch pads on the front last time and the dealer made a snarky note on the service sheet "aftermarket brake pads fitted".  This was after I refused their quote for AUD$1300 for front discs and pads.

That's horrible news and I hope that it is not quite as bad as that, as being bought by ECP would mean that the range would be compressed down to as few different parts as absolutely possible - or even less!

So was that just Pagid of was it the complete group of companies that were under TMD Friction?  I had heard that Pagid in some countries including UK, were manufacturing for some of ECP's "special" brands - but probably nothing wrong in grabbing a bit of that action as a subcontract job.

The Kodiaq MK1 uses ATE rear brake calipers for both rear brake disc sizes, ie. 300x12mm, 310x22mm.

TRW GDB1957 rear brake pads fit the rear brake calipers on both the 300x12mm and 310x22mm rear brake discs.

EuroCarParts don't own TMD Friction or any of their brands including Pagid.

EuroCarParts only made £6.1million profit from sales of £1.05billion in the year ending December 2020, so if anyone's struggling financially I would say it's ECP. Additionally, ECP took £20.5million in government assistance under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and £3.8m in rates relief...so presumably without that government handout they would have made a loss that financial year.

TMD Friction were acquired in 2023 by AEQUITA who are a Munich-based private industrial group

https://www.aftermarketnews.com/aequita-acquires-tmd-friction/#:~:text=The acquisition was finalized in,entity with its own brand.&text=TMD Friction%2C a global brake,Munich-based private industrial group.

ECP only makes £6.1million profit in the year ending December 2020 (company directors don't take any dividends for the second year running)

It sounded implausible to me but what do I know!

Vertical integration would be an act of stupidity to a company like ECP at the opposite end of the supply chain.

It seems Pagid are indeed not owned by ECP, however ECP do seemingly have the sole distribution rights for Pagid in the UK.

Pagid might be exactly the same brake pads as the other TMD Friction brands, such as Hella, Textar, Mintex, etc.

Notice in the example below (which are Kodiaq MK1 rear brake pads) that all these rear brake pads are labelled 25009 and 25011 which are presumably the internal codes. So it appears that ECP hasn't been given anything unique to sell by being given exclusive rights to sell Pagid brake pads in the UK (if ECP has been given exclusive rights to sell Pagid brake pads in the UK).

Notice in the photos below, that the Hella rear brake pads are also labelled Pagid.

Pagid’s UK exclusivity with ECP is detailed on their website.

Which is the exact reason why I reported the fact that they were not selling the full range of pads, to TMD Friction UK ie probably the sales office of Mintex, back in maybe 2008 when I needed to buy new Pagid rear pads for my 2000 VW Passat 4Motion, the only Pagid offering from ECP had no anti-squeal "bits", which was almost okay as long as the sunroof was closed, and their only TMD Friction offering for the front brakes, Textar was listed on the TMD Friction webcat as being only for use in Japan!  That resulted in me being sent out (by TMD Friction UK), the correct pads for both ends FOC, which was good.

Edit:- possibly similar iffyness concerning ECP and Sachs products, I bought a pair of rear dampers for my wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI SEL, only when back home did I check the Sachs part number of the supplied parts - they were for a different rear damper PR code, so I contacted ECP online and they supplied me with the correct ECP stock number, which I went in to buy, but, initially, as I was buying from my online ECP account and that car was the default car selected while buying them, they kept disappearing as ECP was not listing them for that model/version of car, so I had to remove that car's details and so I don't know which marque and model of car ECP had them listed against, just something else to watch out for when ordering from ECP, I normally go for collection with all my facts "to hand" - but this time I failed!

Return time for unused or faulty parts is now only 60 days with ECP which is fair enough, in the past it used to be 365 days I think, just something else to be aware of, which is the same for Halford for parts supplied to them by ECP.

This sounds like uncompetitive behaviour by preventing other companies from selling a product. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives such as Jurid if you don't want one of the biggest brands such as ATE and TRW. Jurid might even supply some of the brake pads on VAG cars including Skoda as original equipment, ie. OE.

Information about Jurid

Jurid is a German brand of premium brake systems and one of the world leaders, both in the field of original equipment and after-sales service, which belongs to the famous American corporation Federal Mogul, now part of the global company Tenneco (USA).

Just to throw something else into the mix....

Brembo friction material (pads and discs) are SHOCKING quality - so many complaints of noisy brakes, ive personally had one with metal imbeded in the friction material out the box!

People see the name and think they are quality parts.....

Brembo hydraulic components like calipers are wonderful quality, but there is a reason youll see a manufacturer use brembo calipers but wont throw brembo pads in them....

And for those that require proof -

The pads/discs that eurocarparts sell and label as 'brembo' are not made by brembo exactly but the name is licensed out to a company in china - https://www.brembo.com/en/company/news/brembo-gold-phoenix-leading-friction-technology

Spot on, I recall explaining the same thing on a thread where someone was complaining to Bosch about brake pads bought from ECP, he was convinced that they actually made them and expected far better of them, in the end he realised that all his conversations with ECP and Bosch were with bots!!!

Yes, Jurid is or was a factory supplier to VW Group or more likely a supplier to TRW or whoever supplied the built up front "units" for VW SA, as my wife's August 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI had originally Jurid front brake pads - and maybe even the NOS genuine VW Group replacement pads that are on it now after the front discs inner faces started to have a build up of corrosion and so wasted the inner pads! So now Pagid HC discs and new VW Group pads.

DBA T2 slotted discs on my Octy RS with bendix pads.  Great inital bite, great in the wet.

I will do the same when the kodiaq is due.

Brembos were similar price, but better experience with DBA.

Hi...!! No doubt you will have changed the pads and discs by now but my own experience taught me NOT to just let Skoda replace them with theirs. I went to my local Halfords (there are other franchised outlets naturally: just to avoid my showing any favoritism?) and although not the best, they did propose the choice of a stronger set all round, and they also offer a reasonable guarantee, together with a lifetime of pad replacements. Wot? The cars life though. Not mine? Even THAT guarantee is transferable should you sell the precious car. You only need show the original billing.  Check them out?

Sorry to revive an old thread.

Is there a way to tell what size discs are fitted other than actually removing them and physically measuring them?

This can be ignored. Just got the car back from the dealers and they quoted for the discs front and rear to be replaced.....nearly £1150 for them to replace 😐😐

are 300m

They quoted for 5Q615301A (front) and 3Q0615601A (rear). With cross referencing Autodoc found out the fronts are 314mm and the rears are 300mm

It would appear from Jurid on autodoc that the brake disc sizes on the Kodiaq MK1 fit the following pattern. However, it's always best to use more absolute methods such as using the car's build codes (and cross-referencing to a Skoda parts catalogue) or taking physical measurements, etc.

Kodiaq MK1 brake disc sizes (engines with less than 150PS)

312x25mm front brake discs

300x12mm rear brake discs

Kodiaq MK1 brake disc sizes (engines with 150PS)

314x30mm front brake discs

300x12mm rear brake discs

Kodiaq MK1 brake disc sizes (engines with more than 150PS)

340x30mm front brake discs

310x22mm rear brake discs

WTF!!!!!

Front and rear in Australia would be that in AUD and our little dollar is worth about 48p.

I just did rear 315mm discs on Q3 with DBA enshield and street series pads for 600AUD.

For others reading this thread, Best way is ring dealer and ask. Quote VIN and or rego plate and they will look up what is fitted. Q3 sline F3 2.0l had 2 x diff sizes fitted at factory. Rang dealer service dept and asked them to look up what was fitted.
