SOS fault?

Featured Replies

So everything was going along fine with my Kamiq (20 plate SEL petrol DSG) for 3 months when up popped the SOS fault on the dash. Apparently it can be random and no certain things will trigger it, I think.

Mine triggered around 3 weeks ago, done around 1500 miles trouble free. Then again yesterday as I pulled away from a shopping trip, it's very random.

So having searched (I usually try and find answers first from a search) I found this...

"fault in the telematics module B20004B - cntrl module faulty'

That was on a 21 plate Octavia, it seems common on VAG group vehicles.

I can't seem to see a definitive answer or fix, I don't want to go chasing and paying a fortune out for a dealer to say, yep we'll swap out this and that without knowing it will fix it.

Ideas what to look at first, is it owner fixable or not, I only have an OBD2 basic scanner?

Cheers

I've had this issue on my Karoq 3 times. First 2 occasions it wa in for 5 days each time. Been having trouble again all summer with occasional alarms. I was going on a 3 week contnental trip and I would have likes to get it sorted, and the only place that could look at it before my trip was ~25 miles away. The car disgraced itself by alarming 4 times on the journey there. Skoda wanted to 'strip out' the system, but couldn't do it before our trip. So away we went, no alarms for over 2 weeks and a couple of thousand miles, but then 5 alarms in the remaining trip. The car went in yesterday, so we used it a couple of times on Sunday to fill with fuel. Alarm went off 3 times in about 5 miles.

Luckily all of this is under warranty, with a nice VW T-Roc R line as a loan car for as long as it takes.

My advice is that it will cost a lot to fix, but as it is a common known problem (despite what the agent tells you) you may be able to get it looked at and some kindof contribution. Won't do any harm to ask.

Thanks for the info, I think I've read you post on it before.

Do you actually know what's to be fixed/replaced and cost?

Most of the posts I've read when searching this doesn't really say parts what parts replaced or costs involved.

Thanks

Happened to my 21 plate MC and a simple software update fixed it.

The first two occasions they replacd an aerial (don't know whether it was 2 different ones or the same one twice). Wok gratis as under warranty. This time I think they are replacing a control unit. Also not, first time they did a software updat frst, there may have been an update second time.

I get this on my superb and just ignore it. As long as the green light in the ceiling is on its working(and anyways its not essential, doesn't connect you directly to emergency services but to a Skoda call handling centre from what I can work out) . The error is(or appears to me to be) just a transient start up issue.

NB sometimes it will pop up the orange triangle of impending doom (in which case I do after a few occurrences reset the Diagnostic codes) , other times it doesn't.

Whenever this happens to me the green light is replaced by a red light. Usually can be cancelled by stopping the engine and waiting for systems to shut. My attitude is that it is something that I have paid for, something that has the potential to save lives, and I expect it to work properly.

ah at least my ceiling light stays green :)

Guess you're going to be joining the long list of VAG owners spending lots of time & fuel  shuttling in and out of the stealers then ;o)

Thanks all for the advice and suggestions. I'm just wandering if it's certain situations that triggers this SOS, like areas you drive through, in the airwaves.

Instance, strange things started to happen with my alarm on an outbuilding, it was since they installed new phone masts. I had to cloak the alarm with foil to stop the alarm triggering. Leaving an android device connected to data triggered the alarm in my Mazda if it was left in the car and it was locked/alarmed.

Anyways food for thought all this hassle with tech stuff.

Interesting and thanks for that link.

I became suspicious when the only time I used the in built sat nav (Amundsen) was the first time it triggers, right at the end on my journey. Second time I wasn't using any navigation just connection to my phone for music. I usually use Waze for navigation if needed.

The first reason I was given was that the system was changing network providers, and this was causing problems. Last occasions I had real problems was 4 alarms on a 25 mile local journey, and 3 times on a short journey to the supermarket. So unlikely to be a chaege of network. It also did a couple of thousand miles through France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and must have changed networks several times.

Anyway, heard from the agent this morning, System stripped out and tested. Skoda Tech want another new aerial fitted (I did ask, there are two). I'll be taking it to Austria again in a month's time. So we shall see!

Going back to some mentioning software updates may or have fixed the SOS problem, I've found this on my Kamiq in the image below. Is this the latest software version? I only remember once there being an update available so I clicked the screen for it to update, I don't recall seeing anything else, so I don't know if it's updated. I click update software and nothing happens, assuming there isn't any updates presently.

Mine has now started with this problem now. Phoned my local dealer to ask about possible recall or cures for vehicles with this problem and was told they know nothing about it. They even told me that they had not heard about any other models with this issue.. There seem to be plenty of things related to this so how they hadn't heard about it is beyond me.

Software update, literally as simple as that.

Do not be fobbed off, it’s a software update.

My first Kamiq had the dreaded sos fault, but my dealer updated it and it ran flawlessly until I traded it in for another Kamiq.

It is possible that a software update will solve the issue, but as I reported, mine had the sofware updated each of the 3 times it went in. There are two aerials, one has been replaced one, one twice, and I'm happy to report that I have done oover 3000 miles to Austria and back without a recurrence. The car is just coming up to tree years old and the end of the warranty. However I paid for an extra 2 years, but somehow the payment got lost in the system, and Skoda seem to be having trouble gettingthe information into their computer system. Should be easy but not successful you, although they do acknowledge that I paid. So hopefullly nother 2 years not worrying about it.

I assume this fits in with this general theme - make of it what you will.

Started car yesterday - alone - and reversing out of my garage, as I've done a hundred times, nothing unusual, a normal day - but suddenly a female voice said 'Emergency operator, what service do you require?'

Startled, I replied 'Pardon!'    She said 'You have called the emergency operator - do you want Fire, Police or Ambulance?'  I said ' None of them, and I haven't called you!'

She then conceded that it might have been the car that had called, not me, and said 'Sometimes that does happen.'   Having again clarified that there was no emergency, the call ended.  I continued on my journey and immediately realised the radio was not working.  Everything else in the infotainment was functioning normally, but all my efforts to get the radio running were to no avail.  At my destination I switched off, dealt with my business and when I returned and switched on the car, the radio burst into life. All has been normal since.

I had spotted this thread previously, but had never bothered to read it.  Now I have read it, I have two comments  -  firstly, I cannot be sure who I was speaking to, a real-life 999 operator (I have recent experience of that) or somebody within Skoda, - secondly, I have just thought to check my phone - and there is no record of any out-bound call, which I find a bit spooky.

The emergency system is independent of your phone. Apparently it has its own (vitual) Sim Card.

Wow!   I did not know that.  That is fascinating  (and still, to my mind, a bit spooky).  Thank you.

the SOS unit in the car ( VW calls it OCU unit)  has an eSIM, which is used to comunicate with the Emergency service. It runs on 3G an 4G mobile networks and also provides internet for Skoda Connect.

The OCU also has GPS tracker to send the car.s location when needed.

That’s a thought. Any vehicle running on 3G only may find their eSIMs stop working as 3G turned off.

Sorry to resurrect this. My Karoq has been in to Skoda 3 times for SOS fault. Last time was before taking the car on a 2000 mile trip to Germany and Austria where it performed perfectly. Yesterday I had the emergency alarm fault 4 times in 50 miles. Sigh! Here we go again. A good job I took out an extra 2 years manufacturers warranty (perhaps there was a warranty on the last repair)

Mine faulted last week, strangely I was opposite a fire station (been past many times)  but also I let an ambulance pass in full emergency mode.

Trying not to get too paranoid about this but I have sensed in the past when this SOS warning triggers its to do with signals, airwaves etc etc.

The time before that was around 10 weeks ago in the Lake District. Approaching a set of roadworks with a red light, all of a sudden my music playing stopped on Spotify (lost signal) then the SOS triggered.

I had an update notification last week just randomly came up, I clicked ok and it updated in around 5 secs, yeah ok, it didn't update anything.

It's a great car (Kamiq SE L) but this small glitch spoils it, minor irritation really.

It'll be Friday lunch before I can report back, but I can ask the Ambulance Service if they have Airwaves.

Food for thought on this, SOS triggered again yesterday. Again I was right next to a set of temporary traffic lights and stopped. It's been last November since this triggered been on my hols to North Yorkshire, down to Wiltshire over Christmas, nothing, no warnings, car faultless.

Mine was in for the 4th occurrence of this fault where it could be practically guaranteed to alarm in any journey exceeding 10 miles. Initially it was diagnosed as a faulty aerial (there are 2, both previously changed, one twice. This time technical requested a software update. I was a bit dubious, as software updates hadn't fixed it before, but this time it hasn't faulted since. although I have only taken it out twice since it was carried out.
