Had a very strange fault pop up on my 64 octavia 1.6d dsg
Driving along normal after leaving home 5 minutes into the journey a stability control system error came up on the dash and the yellow warning light came on then I had no drive as if it had dropped into neutral then the message tyre monitoring no data.
Pulled into a layby car still runs put it in park and it would not come back out of park.
Turned it off and it refused to start giving a message put vehicle in park or neutral to start.
Turned it off for 30 seconds and plugged obd11 in tried to start it and all started and getting all the gears.
Checked the fault codes and had one for engine brakes gearbox ect 17 in total all saying same thing databus error.
Any ideas what can cause this? 

Get the battery and alternator voltages checked first.

The voltage showing when running according to the obd11 app is around 14.4 volts 

Err...no, that's not what was asked. Check the battery voltage and do a CCA EN test to check whether the battery is failing on you. Anything below 20% of the CCA EN value of the battery...it's failing and needs replacing.

Sorry was just giving the info I had to hand. 

Stability control error came up again last night but no loss of drive this time but got a fault code lost communication with tcm

Definitely check the battery voltage BEFORE starting up in the morning and (if possible) get a battery CCA test done.

Have got a new battery to try as the one fitted at moment is the oem one so it's coming up on 10 years old now 

On a side note the car has always suffered from the dsg gear selector micro switch fault ( dealer refused to replace under warranty when I brought it 7 years ago) could this be driving the tcm crazy?

More likely the 10 year old battery...

I didn't have access to a battery tester so decided to errr on the side of caution and fit a new agm battery ( slightly higher CCA and higher overall ampage than to 10 year old one. 

I coded the new battery went for a quick drive to set steering and tire pressure warnings ect and checked the charging voltage using the obd11 app and it was charging at 13.4 not the 14.6 to 8 that the old battery was charging at. 

Fingers crossed it has done the trick will update if it gets me to work OK

Correct charging voltage for AGM is around 14.4 - 14.6 (I.e. a little higher than a flooded LA battery) but your original battery would almost certainly have been the issue.

If the new battery was pretty well charged then the BMS won't need to charge at the higher voltage to charge to battery to it's target of 80% SoC.

Quick question the original battery was a varta but when I coded the new one the make was down as JCB and the type was fleece not agm? 

Actual manufacturer ID is not critical, fleece is the term VW use for AGM.

New serial number can simply be a one digit increment of previous number entered. 

Daft I know but why would my brakes feel better after changing the battery?

10 year old car battery.  Yerr - think it is the battery in that case.  You're lucky if you can generally get 5-7 years.  10 years is pushing the envelope at bit.  Don't forget to get it coded in if your car has stop/start.

Nope didn't fix it now broke down again stuck in gear even AA man can't get it out of park

Did you code in the battery?  Okay - so if you are stuck in gear, there is a release mechanism (look in the manual) on how to release the gearbox if its stuck in Drive/Reverse.  What we haven't had is a proper scan. All the previous symptoms fitted a failed battery. It could be the mechatronics unit that has failed, in which case - go speak with Darkside Developments and get a replacement board.

Got it towed home after I got the gear surround off. Got it home and it started and drove ok but now got to work out what to do now. 

I think I have a full scan off obd11 but need to find it
