Jerky gear change

Featured Replies

Hi all we have had our 2024 kamiq for around six weeks. We have covered 900 miles. But ever since we picked the car up no matter who drives the car we can not always get a smooth change. Sometimes it snatches as though the clutch sticks for a moment and then releases.

we had to have the rac out the other day because the car battery failed. Yes a car that’s only just over 1 month old and the battery failed.  I ask the rac man to test drive the car and get his opinion on the clutch. He agreed it’s not easy to get a smooth change and it’s very jerky. But he said if we were to take it back to Škoda they would find nothing wrong with it. Or say there is nothing wrong with it. And it might settle down once it’s run in and everything as worn slightly.

The problem as got slightly better since we brought the car. So is it a matter of wait and see if it does settle down and stop doing this or should we be going to Škoda and asking them to look at it.

Regards Richard.

Good morning Richard, welcome to the forum.

From your reference to a clutch, presume this is M6 gearbox - if so, does the 'bite point' seem to be normal - or is it higher or lower than you would expect? What is it like moving off from standstill in 1st gear?

The bite point is normal our car is the 1.0 TSI SE 5dr 6 speed from moving of from 1st to second can be extremely difficult at times without it snatching. Sometimes it makes for a very uncomfortable ride for the passengers as it feels like your head is being snapped back and forth.

How does clutch feel as you move from standstill in 1st gear?

It’s smooth to the bite point and then feels like you have just lifted your foot right off the clutch to fast. It’s the same when changing gears it feels like you are trying to change gear to fast. It’s like when you were first learning to drive. I have 40 years of driving. And have held a psv and hgv class 1 license and driven lots of different vehicles. But not come across this problem before. My wife as also been driving for nearly 40 years. Everyone who has driven our car can’t get a smooth change every time.

That sounds to me as if the clutch is 'grabbing'. This could possibly indicate some sort of contamination on the pressure plate or lining.

If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest having a dealer technician take a drive in it.

Why don't you get an OBD configurator and try changing the throttle from value by time to direct value.

I did this to my Kamiq and it made it much smoother to drive.

But it’s a brand new car I am not sure about doing that.

Sell it and get another car then.

Take it back to the dealer you bought it from is the sensible thing to do.

I would take it back and insist one of the Skoda team take it out for a drive with you as a passenger in the front seat.

Let them see the problem for themselves in your presence, and then ask them to put it right.

I think if you return it for them to sort out without them having experienced the problem in your presence, the RAC man might be right about them fobbing you off.

Instead of asking them to put it right, tell them to put it right.

The car is pretty much new, so obviously under warranty.  They have to put it right if there is a fault.

Simple as that.

there is a know issue with the clutch master cylinder and the clutch operation is jerky

Ask the dealer to replace it

Or just tell them to replace it.

There’s something wrong with your car which is under warranty, you tell them to put it right.

Give stealers an inch and they’ll try to take a mile.

Ive seen too many people over the years getting fobbed off from Dealers.  They bend over backwards during the purchasing stage, then when you’ve given up your signature they don’t even act like they give a toss.

Tell them.

I have no issues when I drive daughter's Kamiq - it's a nice drive, actually.  And that's with me normally driving autos.

At least flag it up to the dealer ASAP - I'd have reported it straightaway.  With clutches they'll quickly start blaming your driving style.
