Spare Wheel/Tyre

Featured Replies

Hi so sorry but reading the threads im getting confused,

i have an mk4 Octavia 21 205/60/16 with Aluminium Rim 16" Twister Aero

I have contacted the dealer for a spare wheel (space saver) they say that they dont do a spare wheel (space saver 16")

Im thinking of buying another wheel/tyre with the same as i already have i have as a spare,

i have measured the wheel well and looks like it fits can anyone tell me the part no for the wheel tool kit that will fit in this 16" wheel

Many Thanx

The space saver wheel is an 18 inch one and the tyre profile it's fitted with makes it compatible with the 16 inch wheels fitted to your car. Space savers don't need to exactly match the diameter of the wheels fitted by law but they should be close. I've been looking into this and have just ordered the spare wheel kit and wheel from my local dealer for £256 which includes everything you need. You can find the exact details of the recommended spare on the inside of the fuel flap where the tyre pressures are.

Be warned, there are loads of secondhand 16 inch space saver wheels/kits out there quite cheaply but the profile of the tyres fitted will mean that they could be several inches smaller than the 16 inch full sized ones fitted to the car. They MAY get you out of trouble but the MAY also foul the brake calipers or cause other issues if the car thinks there are significant differences in wheel rotation once fitted. Personally I found that by the time I'd managed to find the correct 18 inch spare wheel/tyre, bought the screw to fix it in, as well as the tools and foam surround, I was better off just buying the correct thing from Skoda and have done.

My 2020 Octavia Mk4 SEL FE has 17" alloys as standard but last September (2023) I managed to get a space saver 16" steel wheel and tyre plus the toolset from my dealer, i.e. everything you need. The parts were...

5E0601011J - 16" wheel

5E0093860E - Sp. Wheel Set

Total price was £190.00.

Interesting, my 2021 1.0 TSI Technology has 16 inch wheels and yet the spare space saver wheel is listed by Skoda as an 18 inch in the catalogue, confirmed by the label on the inside of the fuel filler flap. The circumference calculates out as the same as the normal wheels as the profile is different on the space saver 🤷‍♀️

That's the most important thing, second is that the wheel itself has a large enough interior diameter to clear the brake calipers front and rear.

Agreed, that's what I'd said in my original post too. To be honest I didn't want to find out there was a clearance issue or that I needed to find a different profile tyre to fit to a secondhand one at the side if the road, so I just ended up ordering the correct kit from my Skoda dealer.

Thought this screenshot might be helpful in explaining that it's not just the wheel rim size that needs to be taken into account when selecting the correct sized space saver spare wheel. Because the profile (height of the tyre if you will) is expressed as a percentage of the tyre width and the space saver is a LOT narrower than the normal road tyre, consequently the profile will need to be different to equate. Tyresize.com allows you to see this and compare how much of a difference there is to the road wheel circumference. The 2nd tyre size is that of the tyre/wheel combination which Skoda show on the inside of the fuel flap on my 2021 Octavia 1.0 TSI Technology with 16 inch road wheels. As you'll see it's 3.1% smaller in circumference than the normal 16 inch tyre/wheel but that's pretty close considering you're also limited to 50 mph.

It's also important to ensure that the space saver is of sufficient size and offset to clear the brake calipers.

Hope this helps, as I too found it all very confusing to begin with!

Just to confuse things a bit. My friend at work has a 22 plate octavia hatch and he has a full size spare wheel in the wheel well 205.60.16.

Will a 22 plate estate wheel well take a full size spare or only a space saver?

My 21 plate 1.0TSI Technology Estate would only fit the space saver wheel and tool kit in with the floor laying level and that was tight. You have to ensure the tool kit fits correctly inside the rim of the wheel or the floor will be slightly raised and rock, so unless you leave the tool kits polystyrene holder out, I doubt you'd get a full sized inflated wheel in there.

Further to my post above, I have a 16” steel rim with 205/55 tyre, it’s classed as a temporary spare as my road wheels are 205/55 17” - a different circumference.

Looking in the wheel well, I reckon there is space for a slightly higher profile 205/60 16” . It’d be tight though.

The toolkit insert fits fine under the boot floor no problem with the items I have. Part numbers are posted above.

That is what I was thinking of trying to get rather than the skinny 18" one.

My previous octavia estate ( 64 plate) had a 205.55.16 as a spare with the tool foam insert.

Wish I had taken it out of the old car before I sold it to we buy any car

The foam and jack kit (includes everything except for the actual spare wheel) for the Octavia MK4 is listed at 1609CZK (about £54.23) on "skoda eshop cz"...so it's not expensive. It can be ordered from any VAG parts department by quoting OEM part number 5E3093860B although it might be a little more than the Czech price.

And the 205/55R16 tyre size is incorrect for the Octavia MK4 because it uses bigger outside diameter tyres compared to the Octavia MK3...ie. 205/60R16 instead of 205/60R16.

The Octavia MK3 foam and jack kit might not even fit properly in the Octavia MK4 (if at all)...although I haven't tried it.

Having had a couple of blowouts in the last 12 years, I definitely rate a spare wheel as a must - especially with the state of the roads currently.

After the second blowout I bought a cheap wheel & rim off eBay for my old 2014 Octavia estate, which just sat happily in the well in the boot and (of course) never got used.

I thought it would be dead simple to do the same for my newly-acquired 24 pre-FL Octavia estate.

So I bought a very cheap spare off eBay... but when it arrives, where do I fit it?

My old estate had a sensible (brilliant) boot with a level surface through with the rear seats down (well, as level as possible).

This one has the variable boot floor which everyone raves about..... (why?? 🐵 )

Under the second layer, there's a massive polystyrene lump in the wheel well partly filled by the inflation kit and nothing else.

See the pic.

(It seems to be missing lots of other bits like a jack etc., which I will ask Arnold Clark about.)

But do Skoda (or anyone else) do a polystyrene insert for a spare wheel?

There are different polystyrene pieces for the option with a repair kit (as on your picture) and for the option with spare kit. The option with repair kit also doesn't come with the jack since you don't need it.

So beside the spare tire, you also need to by the corresponding polystyrene piece with the rest of the tools.

The polystyrene piece comes over the spare tire.

Does anyone have the part number for the large expanded polystyrene piece that the spare wheel and tool kit would sit in?  I could improvise something but as the car is far newer than any other I ever owned it seems a shame to do that if the proper part isn't too expensive.

It's presumably important for sound-proofing too.  Quite surprised there isn't much other sound-proofing under the boot. I like your idea for extra sound-proofing.

There isn’t one, only a foam insert to hold the tools which sits inside the wheel itself (that’s with a full size 16” wheel I mention earlier in this thread).

That's a shame!  They must use them at the factory but I guess they would take up a lot of space to store as a spare part.

Just been out to take a photo of mine (excuse the assorted stuff I lug about with me!)

IIRC, in the bottom of the wheel well there is a plate into which a threaded post (supplied with the kit) is clipped, and a nut of sorts which hold the wheel in place. The foam tool holder sits on top of that.

Thanks, very useful.  When the spare arrives I'll a.) check it fits OK in use (other threads have got me worried)  b.)  order a toolkit and c.) think of some good sound-deadening and heat-insulating material that it can sit in.

Hmmm why is your foam insert different than mine? 🤔 It also looks like your spare tire sits higher than mine. So that foam insert that I have, wouldn't fit over your spare tire.

Looks like your tyre is a lower profile than mine (205/55-16) so presumably you have a larger wheel diameter.

I have. And I have Canton subwoofer in the tire. But still. Surprised that there are different options for the tool organizer when having a spare tire in the trunk.

This is how mine looks.

After a few months being too busy to do much about this.... the cheap spare wheel I bought on eBay seems way too small to be safe on the MkIV even as a get-you-home at 50mph max. It's the same type as the one I bought for my MkIII. This MkIV SE L e-tec estate seems to have very different wheels and tyres. So I'm thinking of buying a full-size spare if I can find one at a reasonable price. The wheel well looks, er, well big enough to fit it in. I'd then worry about fitting a tool set later.
