Usb C socket near to rear view mirror for dashcam........issues.

Featured Replies

Hi

Picked up brand new SEL Kodiaq - 2.0 diesel this week.

All good so far - compared to the older model the wireless usb charging pads in the dash are lightningly fast - in fact my pixel 7 pro actually says charging rapidly when placed on one of them and I think they may be ventilated as I have had no "overheated" messages which I got with my old Kodiaq..

However the usb c socket next to the rear view mirror wont power a dashcam (I have tried 3 now) - but it will show as charging my mobile phone if I connect it via a cable to that socket.

I have just ordered a usb c to usb a adaptor to see if that makes a difference - my dashcam takes usb c for the power so I was hopeful a short usb c lead would avoid having to hide wires etc. I have tried a number of usb c cables as well and even switched ends in case they would only work in one direction !! I'll report back how I get on with the adaptor.

If anybody has a dashcam that "just works" with this socket please let me know..............Amazon can't be too happy with me keep sending them back !!

In my experience, it’s more likely to be the cable than the dashcam. Having said that, absolutely no issues with my Garmin one on my Mk1.5 Kodiaq with a cheap short USB-C to mini-USB cable.

What happens if you plug the dashcam into one of the other USB-C sockets in the car?

I have had a lot of issues with a dashcam. I tried to power a new dashcam from one if my front USB c sockets, but I had to use adaptors to convert from USB c to USB a, a datablocking cable(dashcam tried to connect with 'computer'), then a USB a to mini cable. I then tried to use a bullet 2.1 amp supply, but again it would not work properly. I eventually realised that the power supply was not capable of supplying enough power to operate the camera and to charge the battery. So I bought a high quality USB a to mini cable and a 2 x 3 amp power supply. The new power supply on its own didn't do the trick, neither did the new cable. But with both the camera seems to work as it should. The only issue I have now in my Karoq is the fact that the 12V socket is permanently live, so it won't switch off. It is fine in our other car which has a switched 12V socket.

Problem solved...........with a simple usbc to usb a adapter from amazon - cost £5 for 2 !! Works fine - very very strange. But at least it's solved.

Is the usb by the mirror permanently live or switched with the ignition?

Switched on the Mk1… would guess it’s the same on the Mk2.

It is.

Quick update - yes it's switched so it powers off when you leave the car.

And I have had no problems whatsoever with it since placing the adapter into the usb c socket - works perfectly - and much better than having wires training all over the car to the cigarette lighter socker or usbc  lower down in the car.

My cam works fine plugged straight into the usb c port. It's a nextbase.

Same here, although I need to find a short lead with 90 degree plugs.

Here is the problem. USB-C port on Kodi automatically pushing 9 or 20V to the socket as our Chinese friends forgot to put resistor in their 5V dashcams. USB-A adapters often have such resistors. However angled one I got from amazon - did not. Have to repurchase. Option number two - remember how to solder :)

Any recommendations on a good dash cam to use on the usb outlet at the rear view mirror

Hi, I have fitted the Vantrue E1 Pro (Amazon £129.99 - £10 voucher ). Brilliant bit of kit with a polariser filter and Sony Starmis sensor. Superb picture quality and very easy to set up and download files using their app. I bought a short right angle USB C cable from Amazon at the same time for the mirror housing USB socket. The app is excellent and once files are down loaded you can follow your journey video and see your position on the GPS map at the same time. It is so good that I have bought another for the rear (didn’t want the hassle of wiring front to rear with all the airbags in the way). I have plugged the camera into the 12v socket in the boot and changed the fuse position in the fuse box so that the socket is only live with the ignition on (20 amp yellow fuse has three positions, remove and reposition one up). Highly recommended dashcam.
