Advice on tyres

Featured Replies

I will shortly be replacing the original Dunlop tyres. As I'm not too happy with these low profile Dunlops.  Would appreciate any advice regarding the Best option for 2019 Octavia estate. Thanks.

Michelin cross climates would be my choice .

I've had them on my present MK3 and other cars prior to that  . I've found them to be good all round tyres.

+1 from me. I've found them so much quieter than the Dunlops too.

I went with Goodyear eagles, very good grip, comfort and fuel efficient

Are you after a sporty tyre or more comfortable?

Goodyear efficient grip for comfort.

Goodyear assy 6 for sporty.

I think at my age the sporty years have passed me by. So comfort is the order of the day.

I'd probably go for anything mid range, summer tyres, unless you live far up north. I've found kumhos to be very decent for the money & longevity, as like myself you seem not to be a sportier driver these days😅I'd stick with the load rating from factory on all 4 tyres, if you are fitting 4, avoid fitting XL tyres if not required. I try to fit 4 at a time, if possible or at least 2 across the same axle.

I am changing from 17in to 16in and fitting 205/55x16 Falcon ZIEX ZE310 ECO-RUN, I have been told they have softer sidewalls .

+2 for Michelin cross climates, I am on my second set of them. Very good grip throughout all the seasons. I live on the south coast as does the OP and don't regret getting "snow capable" tyres despite the climate down here. They were superb in the last two very wet winters and I drive a lot of very rural roads.

I have 16inch rims and they work out around £110 per corner. Some deals pop up for slightly. They lasted very well and got around 30k miles out of the fronts before replacement required and ~43k on the rears.

Softer sidewalls than ???

Thanks. AG Falco

@Phoenixboy  'Far up north' where, England which is not far north in the UK, or far up north in Scotland that is Shetland?

Location location location, but where you might drive and when. Far up in the North East of Scotland is maybe near the coast of in the Grampians.

Surely people know themselves if they have driven a few years the kind of tyres they need for where they drive and the climate / seasons.

The Falcon ZIEX ZE310 has been replaced by the Falcon ZIEX ZE320. However, both of these models are summer tyres and the rubber will harden when the temperature drops below about 7 degrees Centigrade in the winter. If you're going to use them in the winter below about 7 degrees Centrigrade you would be better off going for all-season tyres. For example, in the snow good all-season tyres have about twice the grip as summer tyres...and that means you shouldn't be driving on summer tyres in the snow, but even in cold rain good all-season tyres still have a massive grip advantage over summer tyres.

Here's a 205/55R16 91V version of the Falken ZIEX ZE320 listed on mytyres

I'd throw the pilot sport 5 tyres in the mix as well. I'm really impressed with the extra improvement in wet grip over the PS4 (which were good in the wet).

According to tyrereviews, the following six tyres are all rated higher for comfort than the Falken ZIEX ZE310. I didn't have to look hard for these more comfortable tyres because they were simply the first six other tyres that I looked at.

Bridgestone Turanza 6 (comfort 84%)

Continental UltraContact (comfort 84%)

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 (comfort 83%)

Hankook Ventus Prime 4 (comfort 87%)

Kumho Ecowing ES31 (comfort 80%)

I just Googled most comfortable tyres and Falcon close to top.

don`t want to spend too much but don`t want budget ones.

Always happy to receive advice.

I fitted the same tyres as the old ones, Hankook Ventus Prime 3 (old were Prime 2) because they performed well but above all because I did 55000 miles on them and they were part worn when I got the vehicle, remarkable considering its 4WD, that I often drive like I still on a racetrack and the massive loads they have towed over 10k miles or more.

I do my own tyre fitting and they did not need any balancing on factory rims with the old weights removed, a pleasant surprise from the stickers (which I have on my workshop wall like any tyre shop!) is that they have an A rating for wet weather grip.

They were very cheap compared to other makes so worth considering.

No punctures in all those miles although one needed reinflating every 3 weeks towards the end which I thought was the first of the alloys to go porous but no longer a problem with the new tyres, maybe a bead leak but I have never known one develop unless the rim corrodes and mine hadnt.

Hi mick. Are there any issues replacing 17" with  1 6"  .  Would that give a smoother ride without low profile tyres?

16" are standard on estate so no problem .

My Octavia estate has 17" wheels.

Very but the Yeti has 16" wheels and high profile tyres so has an advantage, they are much more comfortable than both sets of winter tyres I have tried.

Think you will find you had a choice when bought new

I think you mean 205/55R16

The Falken ZIEX ZE310 EcoRun came first for subjective comfort in this 2023 tyre test, although sixth overall.

Fortunately, the test was for the 205/55R16 tyre size, mostly 205/55R16 91V.

The 205/55R16 is Europe's most popular car tyre size and therefore it's a cheaper tyre size than most other 16" tyre sizes. For this reason, there isn't a lot of money to be saved by going for one of the non-premium brands.

Bear in mind that this tyre test was published quite a while age so won't include all the latest tyres.
