I am  planning on changing the cigarette lighter to a USB.

 

As anyone else done it? And do you need a removal tool? To get the lighter out?

I just put a usb adapter in mine. A short one that just fits the hole and does not stick out the top.

Seems far simpler a solution.

 

What's the reason you want to actually change the existing cigarette lighter socket and replace with something different ?

As @aubry says, much easier to just buy a plug in adaptor that has sockets in it, can get both usb A and usb C versions.

 

You would have to buy a socket anyway if you tried to convert it

Far better to use an adaptor IMO, as you will lose the 12v socket if you convert it.

So no 12v tyre inflators, no 12v solar power battery trickle chargers, etc., etc.

I have one like this. Not the same, but works fine.

Yeah my mate/neighbour already suggested something similar.... I have 2 of those things but they seem to "wobble" when they are in.... could be cause I've brought them from poundland 😂

 

I'm sure there is another 12v cigarette lighter charger in the boot 🤔

You ask about the tool thingy, whilst I have a usb adaptor that I plug in, I did have to replace the lighter socket and the first garage that tried to do it shorted the fuse by trying to lever it out with a metal tool.

 

I didn't see what the better mechanic used but he did say you can't just try and grasp the metal edge.

 

Also, it needed replacing because whoever before me had busted off one of the little tabs that hold it into the hole, presumably by trying to lever it off without the tool. 

 

So maybe it can be done carefully without the gizmo but mine was busted in 2 ways from folks trying to brute force it.

Hi Irish-Roomster, did you get round to this?

We’ve just got a Roomster and I’m thinking of fitting one behind the front cupholders. I hope to pick up a switched live feed from the radio.

Even if I swapped the cigarette lighter for USB the cable would still route past the gearlever/handbrake.
