Noisy door - creak hunt diary... 69 plate

Featured Replies

Ok so there is an annoying tickly tickle noise on that rough tarmac you get on slowish roads, when moving around 20-30mph. It seems to be going from centre of front passenger door panel. It wasn't there when I bought the car 2nd hand from main dealer and it was liberally coated inside and out in that shiny greasy stuff they put everywhere to make it feel new. The sound regardless of window position, and regardless of whether central locking is on or off.

1- So I've removed the main door handle top part and given it all a good coating of dry ptfe spray where parts meet. didn't help

2- Then I used dry ptfe spray in the panel gap between the main handle and the handle top part, capillary action taking it down along the seam. didn't help

3- Then I did the same dry ptfe spray in the panel gap around the window switch panel and the main handle. still didn't help

Next- is to remove the handle top half again and check the bolt holding handle to door is tight but it certainly doesn't feel loose. And while it's off I will use actual silicon grease on those little metal clips that hold handle top half onto main handle body, I reckon one of those could possibly be rattling?

After that we are into the realms of removing door card and muffling any loose wires, but I don't fancy that tbh don't want to break any plastic clips by mistake. And if it didn't do it 3 months ago why is it doing it now?

Any body else been through this? cheers!

  • in my case the plastic handle was making a noise and it was driving me nuts... I followed few videos from YT  (one below and some others) and took the plastics off, then instead of spraying/coating it

  • The rattle there is between the two skins of the lid.  The outer one is simply a trim that can be changed to suit different interiors for the different trim levels so it should unclip allowing you to

  • Back and the road 90% likely to trigger the rattle was silent!! Looks like success but will need a few more test flights first

Aha!! Ok so I went back in to wipe things down after the ptfe and waddaya know!!! Looks like the passenger window control panel is blue!! All the others are black!! So possibly a loose or broken clip behind there after previous owner replaced it... Pics attached either a weird optical illusion or there actually is a blueish interior option ?

in my case the plastic handle was making a noise and it was driving me nuts... I followed few videos from YT  (one below and some others) and took the plastics off, then instead of spraying/coating it with the grease I used small pieces of foam which I glued to the handle to stop it rattling. Simple job, in my case completely cured the rattling.

Cheers, so you used the foam to prevent it resonating? or to make a tighter fit?

Tighter fit, but this stopped the rattling. Initially I didn't think it could be actually the handle making these noises, it sounded more like something inside the door, but I was glad that it was a quick/cheap fix ;)

Great ! If and when the rain stops I will have another go

Dear diary

Ok so didn't have much time today after work so put a blob of silicone grease on every spigot that the metal clips attach to, door side and handle piece side. Quick drive confirmed this made zero difference.

When I get time I will have to try what rbss suggested. After that it will be trying to get the electric window control panel out for a look-see

  • Author

Tried a short drive today with handle cover removed , got a slightly different noise now I think so will still be investigating the window switch next

Closer inspection shows that the little yellow metal clips might have room to rattle even when engaged so put tiny foam piece on the tab to hold the clip in more tightly let’s see how that goes

  • Author

Nope, two clips with foam and no change, will do the others when I get a moment

  • Author

ok! so todays small step was to finish putting small foam pads on the clip mounting tabs, basically a round pad about 1mm thick, self adhesive and 6mm diameter, placed on top of tab then the clip pushed on as normal but with less room to wriggle about.  Then various foam pads stuck to flat areas to help suppress any resonance. will test drive it tomorrow.

Long drive today, starting to wonder if there is a second noise from top glove box mechanism too... Noticed a couple of the locating tabs on the handle cover are broken, don't remember breaking these but with the oddly coloured window switch panel perhaps previous owner broke those tabs when replacing window switch. Bit the bullet and ordered a new handle cover for £15 and will see if that helps. then I can move onto the glove box...

I'm interested in any intel on the top glovebox.  Mine has a mega annoying rattle/buzz that comes and goes for no apparent reason.  At least I think it's the top glovebox...

The kids can make the rattle stop by pressing glovebox centre gently in. I’ve started adding felt behind the closure to try to hold it more in tension when shut, no success yet

For me it seems to make little difference if the lid is open or closed.  Even though the lid seems purpose built to be a resonator, I think my problem is something deeper.  Is your rattle constant, or does it come and go like mine?

  • Author

Mainly constant but sometimes totally absent. I’ve lined inside face with self adhesive felt sheet and it helps a bit but really I’m tempted to drill two holes and fill it with expanding foam just need time to check out how that might go wrong

The rattle there is between the two skins of the lid.  The outer one is simply a trim that can be changed to suit different interiors for the different trim levels so it should unclip allowing you to pad it out and stop the rattle.

If it's not that then it could be the door trims that run from front to back and match the glovebox trims.  They can rattle against the door panel so all of mine have been padded out a bit with some thin rubber pushed under them between the trim and the panel

I have a bit of a history of breaking trim. Amy advice on where to attack it to get the trim off the lid please?  It would certainly be interesting to remove the trim for a while to see if the buzzing goes away.  I'd then obviously know the cause 100%.

This suggests about 6 clips plus possibly a couple of screw??

Still waiting for new part to arrive, during the last week or so the left centre front air vent started making an incredible rattle unless light finger pressure on the slider! Omg annoying anyway a hair bobble from one of the girls twisted around and behind the slider has silenced that one …

The vents seem almost designed to rattle, so I'm surprised they're not much much worse than they are.

Hooray!! New part arrived (from LLLparts £22.50) with new clips too. Looked identical except my broken side tabs were now whole of course. Two or three more side clips made a big difference it CLACKED into place and two drives later i think its all good!! That means I can now hear the glovebox lid more clearly of course…

Anyway a few more drives are needed as weather temperature sometimes affects the creaking but so far so good.

I have a facelift car and about the only thing that's never made a noise is the internal door handles, so there's hope in that regard.

  • Author

That’s good ! Sadly todays early morning drive showed the creak/tickle to be present still,  argh

Still going crazy with this, narrowed one down to the resonation of the glovebox layers as @skomaz said , seems to be the knuckle of the hinge making the noise but made louder by the hollow facia. Have some plans to try and will post updates here for posterity.
