Oil leak

Featured Replies

Spoiler

Has anyone experienced oil leaks under sump , I noticed a stationary drip but all sump is wet with oil , anyone experience this any idea where it's coming from , I noticed it when I did oil change , the under tray is damp rather than wet , possibly thinking could be sump gasket ??

Welcome.

Maybe an idea to say what engine the car has.

Hi sorry yeah would be better, 1.2 tsi Skoda rapid sportback nh1

So the chain driven cam 8V early version of TSI, have you noticed any oil appearing/wetting the engine under the bonnet - like where the PCV tends to break off?  Or oily smells getting into the cabin via the cabin air intake?

Hi rum , I had the pcv replaced last full service by dealer , going Tues to see them again about t chain on start up, I changed the oil and oil leak , I'm thinking it could be sump as no oil above on engine bone dry . Thanks .

Just back from dealers and they told me I need , l/h driveshaft seal , gearbox seal, sump seal , t chain cover seal , oil seperator+ seal . €1320 😔 . So at the moment motor factors I have asked can't get all the parts and one only 2 parts .

I'd get a second opinion, it's hard to believe that all these seals are broken. Seems like a blind shot with a shotgun and not a real diagnosis...

Strange yes , must be quiet. The sump chain and seperator I can tube that , drive shaft  seal leak is just a seal , I won't be getting them to do it anyhow . The leak isn't running but at same time I need done , my gut tells me sump main culprit . I know couple of reliable back street mechanics . I costed parts from 530 down to 150 that's including oil new oil . I'm sure I can knock another 400 off labour .I'll keep this post going untill I sorted it.

First thing to do is to remove the under tray and from below give the engine and gearbox a good warm pressure wash and let the car drip dry for a few hours.

For the next few days look at the engine after driving and hopefully you will see where the oil is starting to come from then you replace just this seal.

Thanks for advice , so I spoke with technician and basically I need sills I don't need new sump or oil seperator which is what service desk said to me hence the 1300 figure , went to local mfactor and got sills for 19 euro , I need to find good backroad mechanic as I'm physically unable to remove sump etc. getting oil smell in cabin now , Lh drive shaft seal .

Sump sealant.   T chain sealed up and he said while down there get oil seperator re sealed , all ready had new breather valve fitted , just unlucky I guess .

Hi kostas123 , yes , I had dealers phoned me today asking if I'll be servicing my car with them ha I said no after a quote with vat €1300 and parts for oil leak I got for €19 , so as the chain cover needs to be sealed I'm getting new chain/tensioners , serpentine belt and oil filter that be ready for winter also the car is coming up for 140000km and chains need changing at 150000. So I'm waiting for parts now .

@rappeeed14  Where did you get the information on the chains needing changed at 150,000 km ?

Hi Ootohere, that I can't answer I'm afraid I did alot of searching and was on alot of sites , my brother in-law thinks he heard the stealers say 200000 km but then I read 150000 , so I ordered a bilstein chain kit as the cover is leaking , also on start up the chain does sound loose , I noticed also when the oil gets near to change it makes noise more frequently and longer , also I found that these so called non brand oils that have same spec are **** , I did Castrol edge fill last change and the difference is very noticeable. I still get chain noise at start up few months after change , car has 139000 kmso I'm getting it changed , I tend to  renew serviceable parts sooner rather than squeeze out and past service intervals as a precaution . Economy is still reading 5.5 give and take and still pulls , this model sportback has bit too much road noise for my liking.

Skoda / VW changed last year the Cam Belt replacements to that sort of  km,s, well actually miles.

Ok right that I didn't know , so it's a good thing I'm changing it, again it's peace of mind .

If work is getting done then changing the tensioner & chain is sensible.

Timing Chains and Cam Belts are different things.

1.2 TSI Timing chain / tensioner issues was a pre 2012 issue.  But nothing is forever.

Hi , mine is 14 , and true nothing is forever even chains stretch , out of the two chains just give you longer service ,

Also I'm using Castrol edge all the time now.

Nothing special about Castrol Edge, VW504 00 / 507 00, 5w 30 FS III.

Only Castrol spend lots on advertising. people recognise and pay more, or not, discount stores can stock it.

Supermarket Asda or Tesco or maybe Comma to the same spec will not ruin an engine, proper oil producers produce the Fully Synthetic oil.

For the 1.4 TSI i would use VW502 00 not Long Life and do fixed oil and filter changes.

So that is 5w 40 FS.

  • Author

Oh mine is 1.2tsi 2014 it takes 5w 30 and non brand oil I noticed difference with hearing chain on start more frequently but Castrol edge doesn't.

Today I was parked and woman drove into wing so got to sort that now

Your Euro 5 1.2 TSI takes 5w 30 FS III or even 0w 30 FS III if you want for Fixed or Variable Servicing / Oil changes.

The VW502 00 is the correct oil for Fixed Oil & Filter services and any producers might be quieter even than your Castrol, it really is just the viscosity it is, nothing special.

Thanks for updating me and the info on oils . I screen shot it for keeps , keeping the car for a lengthy period that will be handy , thank you .

What doesn't leak on this engine after 10 years.

1) Oil seperator does not need to be replaced just cleaned and resealed. Real pain to remove and reinstall because you need to remove exhaust which is annoyingly time consuming process.

2 ) Rear main seal can leak or very bottom of it can leak where it comes together with oil pan. Gearbox shaft seal can leak. Any leak from there is time consuming job.

3) Common place for oil leaks is the seal around oil level meter at the very bottom of the oil pan. Easy 5min job to replace when doing oil change.

4) Anywhere around the oil pan can leak. Hard to take off and reseal without some additional work.

5) Oil filter bracket is very likely to leak. There are two rubber seals that get very hard like plastic from engine heat and start leaking all over the alternator, AC pump and rest of the engine below it. Fairly easy job but still takes time.
