Favorit Windscreen Wipers and Washers Not Working

Featured Replies

Hi all, we have a 1995 Skoda Favorit estate and the windscreen wipers and washers have stopped working. This had been an intermittent fault but now they have stopped altogether. Also the reversing light isn't working. I believe these all run off of fuse 5 but all fuses in the fusebox are good. We have replaced the relay for the intermittent wipe with a new one and tried swapping the other relays around. There is voltage getting to the front wiper motor, one when the ignition is turned on (for parking the wipers), and the next three terminals each have 12v in the three different wiper switch positions. I have tried turning the wiper motor by hand with a spanner and the linkage is free, and the motor parks the wipers when the ignition is turned back on. So it doesn't apear to be an issue with the wiper motor and in any case the rear wiper, both washer motors and the reversing light aren't working.

We also have an intermittent fault with the central locking not working and another intermittent fault when the engine won't start due to no spark at the plugs. If it's left for a while it then starts fine? I don't think either of these are related to the wiper/washer problem though? The car has an aftermarket disabler fitted which we are going to try and remove at some point.

If anybody has any suggestions or advice regarding the wiper/washers/reversing light problem I would be really grateful.

Thanks.

Lot of electrical issues.

Have you run an error test with VSDS or a similar tool?

Have you check the connections in the right lever on steering wheel column?

The bulbs for the reverse are OK?

Thanks for the reply, what is a VSDS? Yes I've checked the connections in the wash/wiper lever and there is voltage getting to the wiper motor when the lever is operated. The reversing bulbs are good.

Check earthing points

Sorry, VCDS it's a scanning tool for error codes.

Oh right thanks. Does the Favorit have an OBD socket?

Ah I see, thanks everyone so far, this gives me some things to check out.

The washers aren't clogged? Their plastic can with water is clean? In the bottom has any residues?

You hear the sound of the pump while pressing the lever?

Checked fuse box for corrasion, damp, water and all electric wires, cables, switches connections (and earths) are all clean. secure and protected.  Tried wiggle and heat tests.  Tried voltage drop tests other side of switches, relays, wires, cables, connections.  Tried testing before and after load(s).

There was a great video showing how to test but I can't find it now so the following video gives the general idea and it's always worth starting at the battery and then battery terminals to see what voltage the battery actually is at to see what is lost at any point on the car, the more joints from the battery the more likelihood of very minor acceptable drops.  Obviously if you are testing lots of items and using them to test then gradually the battery may lose some voltage too.

For any electrical or engine starting diagnostics it is best to have the car battery fully charged before you start or at least at a reasonable level of charge, particularly if using heavy electric loads (like starting the engine) multiply times (bit like not having enough fuel for sufficient test drive(s).

A brand new "12v" car battery in various circumstances fully charged not fitted to the car or charged within days might show 12.7v-12.9v.

Hi all, I thought I'd post some feedback on what was causing issues. Also our Favorit does not have an OBD socket, it was in fact manufactured in 1994 not 1995, but registered in 1995, I don't know if ODB ports were added in 1995?

The faults occurring on several items that ran off of fuse 5 was a red herring, it turned out they all had individual problems.

The washers and wiper not working was due to corrosion on the wiper switch contacts (see attached photos), once cleaned up with a brass brush all wipers and the front washer worked, the rear washer motor needs replacing though. Can anyone tell me where I can get the washer motors? We did replace one some years ago and it came from CZ, it might have been from BRISKODA but I can't find any listed?

The reversing lights not working was due to a break in the wire where it exits the car body and enters the tailgate.

The central locking not working was down to an inline fuse holder that was brittle and coming apart so this was replaced.

We removed the aftermarket immobiliser and so far the intermittent starting problem hasn't recurred (see attached photos).

Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope this may help someone else?

Does Skoda Favorit-Forman1994 have diagnostic port?

OBD port was added in Felicia with MPI engines. Even if Favorit had OBD port, it wouldn't help, since its ECU manages just the engine and nothing else. Fuel injected Favorit's only had proprietary diagnostic port.

Skoda-parts.com still has washer pump made in CZ, if you don't mind higher price and shipping costs.

The shipping prices are very high in this shop, sometimes higher than the cost of the item itself.

you buy many not just one

I don't want to make a stock from different parts ''i case that i will need it in the future''.

Update: I had some years to buy from this shop (skoda-parts.com) and recently i saw two things:

1) the shipping rates are far more less the before, en example 8,7 euros for an order to Greece via courier

2) is related with online-dily.cz s.r.o, the payment goes to skoda-dily.cz

In the past i had problem ordering from other Cz stores because they had only the bank Transfer system for payment which meant more cost (commission) and delay for verification etc.

Add the delay answering in the email and you have the whole picture but the guys in skoda-parts.com are far more better to do business with.
