It's probably an indication that either the exciter wire or the sprague clutch is starting to go. Have a hundred quid ready in case the clutch breaks but don't worry unless/until the light either doesn't come on when you switch the ignition on or you start getting graceful degradation of the electrics.

If you can get the voltage regulator/brushpack off without too much grief, check brush lengths.

I will have a Google what that is and how to do it peat ,

Is it the clutch in the alternator or in the pulley next to it paws? Thanks for your replies

In the alternator drive pulley yes. I've had both of the issues I suggested as possible, and a competent local garage will can diagnose and repair if you wait for the actual failure.

Just done my regulator on a Skoda Roomster 1.9tdi pd. Charging light came on and stayed on. 11.6 volts output when tested, brushes were 7.5mm, serviceable to 5mm. Bosch alternator, regulator and brushes combined £26 on eBay. Cheaper than £200-300 for a Bosch alternator.

If charge light stays on, as suggested by Breezy Pete check brushes on regulator before righting alternator off.
