Hi All,

I recently bought an 04 awx 5 speed manual 1.9TDI on 99k one owner from new,

Within a month of owning it there is a whine noise under deceleration commensurate with speed and this has now evolved into accelerating as well which seems to come from the gearbox area.

Any ideas what it may be?

DMF "chatters" a bit at idle (and gearstick vibrates) but the "chatter" stops when clutch is depressed in case related.

Not had a gearbox oil change as far as aware or a clutch or dmf (Changes gear fine)

Thanks,

Well number one change the oil in it. Can really help. Takes two litres.

Layshaft bearings, they can go on for decades like that, be concerned if it gets progressively worse, mine used to whine after pulling a massively overloaded trailer (several tonnes) through mountain switchbacks but would quieten down the next day, I never changed the oil in 325000 miles.

Does it do it in all gears or just the intermediate ones?
