Columbus Map and Software update risks

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2019 Superb Mk3 with the Columbus (I think) Head Unit, I don't think it has been updated in the past few years. I see updates available on the Skoda site and a have a few questions before I pull the trigger on updates.

Any risks with doing the software updates (maybe leave well enough alone?). Maybe add new bugs in the system etc?

Any known advantages to the upgrades? New features, bug fixes, or maybe some features disappearing in newer version?

I assume updating the maps should be risk free?

Is the only option to download the whole world map? It seems massive, I wont be going much further an Ireland, UK or France

Will the navigation system accept eircodes (Irish postcodes)?

Am I better off just stick with android auto and ignore the built in maps?

Thanks

No issues , won’t bring in bugs as it’s literally for maps only so no new features, just roads :) . I always do it on mine.

You should see Europe maps and not just world, if you’re in UK as you using the correct url for Skoda update portal?

As the car is new to you in the last few years Skoda stopped receiving traffic reports, if you’ve got vcds etc you can change a code to get this back though.

If traffic reports important to you and don’t have vcds etc then just stick with google maps via android auto and apple car play, at least it’s live data for traffic compared to what could be old news through traffic reports

I downloaded the update file from skoda.ie yesterday using the VIN. It gave me this file "HIGH2__P370_EU_202425", so seems to be just for EU. @MartiniB  is this similar to the files in the link you mentioned? Or maybe more available on the maps you have shared?

@Danoid  It would be great to get the live traffic reports on the maps too, is this available in Ireland or just UK?  Does that update via the RSAP interface to phone, or does it need a the phone to hotspot? Are the traffic reports similar to google maps where it will show delays?

I may be able to get access to VCDS, and im comfortable enough with PC and diagnostics but still wary of doing harm with it! 🙂 I will take a look through the forum here, i'm sure someone has an explainer on how to do it anyway.

My plan was to use android auto for pretty much everything, but it seems the audio quality is not as good via android auto. I cant understand why it would be, but it's noticeably different when switching from one to the other.

Columbus. Amundsen has twisty knobs.

Not too sure about Ireland, it’s somewhat similar but no way near as accurate as google maps because that shares data instantly.

Not too sure about quality difference, I don’t think that when android auto or apple is involved it plays audio over Bluetooth, but in your audio settings have a search for something like “Bluetooth audio sound” my car it was set to low, as soon as I put that to high it sounded better but that was for me playing music

Thanks all, will try out the maps and settings during the week

I tried out the maps at the link shared by @MartiniB, update worked fine, but it seems that the maps still don't support Irish post codes.  Has anyone had any success getting eircodes to work?

how did you update yours? USB stick or SD card? my car isn't able to read the update software from SD card

I did it with SD card. First time I tried it (with the file downloaded from Skoda site) it didn't work. I then did a format of the SD card and added the file linked above and it worked without issues. Not sure if it was the change of file or formatting the SD card made the difference.

The file format NTFS/FAT32 is important for SD cards.

I can't remember which is the correct one.

I got annoyed always trying twice and waiting 20 minutes to download the files again.

I use a USB hard drive now for the transfer.

Works just the same and is slightly faster than a usb stick.

Technophobe here, can anyone load it for me onto an SD card or usb stick, I had someone kindly do it once a few years back, I will send the card or stick to you with a prepaid return envelope, as I have new Škoda superb now after someone unkindly wrote my other one off, it’s a Škoda Superb 2017 2lt tsi petrol sel executive punch button controls. Thanks, just private message me if anyone can help.
