Superb 272 Kickdown (7Spd DSG)

Featured Replies

Recently bought a 2020 Superb 2.0 tsi 272, with a dq381 7spd box and lately I'm noticing the gearbox doesnt want to kickdown to 2nd for any speed above 35mph, it'll happily grab 3rd but this sets the revs around 3k which doesn't give you the kick you'd be expecting, I can manually shift to 2nd, which is fine, but for those sudden overtaking moments its pretty frustrating as you think its going to take off but you end up sitting there waiting for 4.5k revs to come around. When I first got the car it would kickdown most times but would hold back breifly as if deciding what gear to go for then picking second and going ballistic.

Weirdly though, when travelling at higher speeds it'll kickdown to 3rd (from 6th or 7th) pinging the revs to almost 6k, it will do this in most instances without fail.

Is this just the way the DSG behaves? do most people just drive them with the paddles in these situations?

Cheers

I have found with mine (albeit a 1.5 with dq200 7 speed) that any situation where you need a decent response, put it in S mode.

I tend to put mine in S when approaching particularly busy roundabouts, the throttle response is a lot better and it will drop 1 or 2 gears quicker than in D.

Agree with classic - I tend to flick into S for a variety of situations including coming up to a roundabout where I may be slowing down but may be able to keep going at the last minute, or any reactive spirited driving such as overtaking.

i do as travs above, or use the paddles. Overall, after a few months and over 12k km I must say I am finding the DSG, together with the poor damping, among the most disappointing things in this car. Now the suspension can be tuned/fixed, but the DSG ... this is my first car with this type of transmission, I am familiar with all types of autos for over twenty years now ... and I do not think is the top of the systems ....

If doable, I would seriously consider to toss the DSG and fit a auto with TQ in a heartbeat.

Will try first to ... what was it? Calibrate it? Adjust it? Something like that ...

Had a Kia Sportage before this - no idea what the issue was but when crawling it would kangaroo; like a random application of fuel and clutch. Also being a dry-clutch system you were advised not to crawl in traffic.

Trust me, this DSG is like heaven comparatively! Anyway, look at TVS DSG remap. Meant to be pretty much the best of the best DSG remapping with lots of features. As said on the remap thread, the TVS DSG remap for me would have doubled the cost for me on top of the Racingline ECU flash so I didn't go for it but I would have in a heartbeat if the money issue would have been the case.

Thanks will look into it ... 😉

And I am sure there is worse, I had a neighbour with an MMT-equipped Yaris which behaved pretty much as you well described, kangaroo-jerking box... still, I wish it was smoother, but I will go first into checking its condition.

Other mate my mate took me around in his very mint P38RR, with its outdated and archaic 4-spd ZF slush box, but there is nothing, nothing disrupting in the ride, the gears change effortlessly and without any bumps or jerks. What a pleasure ...

Thanks for the replys.

I think I have to agree with the above, the DSG along with the soft suspension have been disappointing, I'm looking to upgrade the suspension with Koni actives (unfortunately no DCC on my car), but the 7 spd DSG, whilst it works fine when pootling around is prooving frustrating when wanting to press on. the one thing its really good at though is when pulling away from lights, with the 4x4 the thing just takes off. when trying to press on on any back roads is where it all starts to fall apart, I think I need to stop being lazy and start using the paddles a bit more!

I should have probably also mentioned my car refuses to kickdown to 2nd at anything above 35ish mph regardless of being in Sport or Drive mode

That is OK, there are 7 gears and 1st is really only pulling away, or coming to a stop.

6 speed DSG,s had / have different ratios, and not Management for the WLTP & RDE2.   Engineered for a tests / certification, not drivers enjoyment..

As above, I think the mapping is also different between a Superb Sportline and the Octavia VRS which is designed to be a bit more hooligan. I found my Octavia VRS, albeit with the 6 speed box, to be a bit more responsive and raw.

I think throttle response is the most annoying thing, but I reckon a TVS map (I dont have one but want to get one from the research Ive done) and a throttle box will transform the car. I dont think throwing more power at it is necessarily the right way at the moment, accessing the power in the right way is more of a priority.
