Skoda superb 2.0 4x4 cam belt replacement

Featured Replies

I have a 2014 superb which has done 74800 miles. I had the cam belt and water pump replaced at 46000 miles in October 2019

I have been informed that the cam belt and water pump requires changing at 40k or 5 years which ever comes first. The vehicle has only done 28800 miles since this work has been done but it is over the 5 years. This is an expensive job (quoted over £500.00)

any advice as to should I ‘bite the bullet’ and replace the cam belt + pump

Who actually informed you that Skoda / VW still advice at 5 years / 40,000 miles was the schedule. It was 5 years / 50,000 anyway.

But check if there was any change on advice when it changed for TSI,s which was back last July.

Someone here with one might tell you.

Or check for you.

My vehicle is 2014 superb hatchback 2.0 litres automatic DSG 4x4 l&k model and I have received an email from my local skoda dealer (the one I bought it from new 10 years ago) saying from their records the cam belt was due to be changed . The email states skoda advises replacement at 40k or 5 years which ever comes first. This dealer changed the cam belt and water pump in 2019 at 46000 miles.

Get someone to show you that Advice in writing from SKODA.  Should be easy, they can open the book, or print out from their computer.

Show that they are not taking the p!th with the 4 year bit.

Maybe there is not revised advice for your 2014 engine in the dust free UK, and it is as it was 10 and 5 years ago.

They would love to see you and take your money.

Ask the person on the Service Desk that knows nothing about engines not to ask the Service Manager who maybe trained them but to go ask the Master Technician.

Do you have the Haldex Serviced every 3 years and the brake fluid changed every 3, and i hope the air filter looked at every service, not every 60,000 miles / 6 years.

Thanks for the info

I know the main dealers are trying to get you to ‘service’ everything as it helps their bills !!!

getting past the service reception to speak to someone more knowledgeable is quite difficult. The receptionist is only following the check list on their screen.

i will try and contact skoda direct and see what they recommend

thanks again Ootohere for your help

It is not Skoda direct you will get, it will be their Contractor for Customer Services who know even less, they should be able to Phone a friend or use AI if they are not a Bot, but usually they advise to ask a Dealer.   A drug dealer is probably more in the know.

Either email back to them the screenshot Ootohere has put up or tell the receptionist her computer is out of date - you could also ask them how many others they've conned in this way or take the email to something like Trading Standards or whatever the equivalent is.

This boils my blood as we were ripped off when my wife's Fabia was 5 years old, just the UK doing it, if we were in USA we'd all be on to VW and get our money back.

I've attached a pdf of the 1st July 2023 change, that's 18 months ago more than enough time to up date all paperwork and computers.

Cam Belt Guidance change (1).pdf

Is there a list of mileages for the various engines can run until the belt change is needed? The above seems to cover our 2019 Karoq but would be interested in other engines.

incidentally, am I reading the table above correctly that a petrol engine Karoq doesnt need a belt change in low dust countries and even in high dust places its 120000 km?

I've had emails  from VAG dealers (Skoda and Audi) advising me that cambelts needed to be changed on cars with engines that had chains not belts - so don't believe anything the dealer tells you!!!

Thank all but I am now confused does my vehicle have a cam belt or a cam chain?

all I know is that it’s the 2.0 TDI  automatic 4x4 (3T4) engine - 2014 model.

I called into the dealers and one ‘mechanic’ there said it’s a cam belt and another said it’s a cam chain! Not much faith in them now!!!

What's the engine code of your car?

Belts still need checking, and other things related can need replacing but in general in Europe they weren't changing at 5 years like in the UK, same engines.

From my records the engine number is CFG390967

the chassis number is TMBDF73T5E……. Not sure about putting the full number on the forum

So you have a CFG code engine.

You could look and see if the belt cover is VW fantastic-plastic or metal, plastic for rubber belt.  Or enter your VIN in a few car parts sites and see if they give the same part (never trust only one source of info (even manufacturers errors and omissions are in all databases, even well before AI's help).

This kit is from a USA site (don't expect USA prices for this lot as a kit in the UK), I've not confirmed this is correct, you should - "It is compatible with your Skoda SuperB 2010 - 2014 model vehicles with 1.6 TDI (CAYB-CAYC) 2.0 TDI (CFF-CFG) engines. The set includes timing belt, timing balls and water pump. Gates brand; It produces for...". - https://autopartshall.com/products/skoda-superb-1-6-2-0-tdi-timing-set-with-circulation-gates-brand?srsltid=AfmBOooHUcUSPabEiKW8-PmehFxZoUzmpMndng1ZTbcZrwI7Lhhu3jKg

Time for my tea/dinner, depending on where you was brought up, were brought, brung up or dragged up.
