Advice on buying Skoda Superb 2016 - 2018

Featured Replies

Hi all, new member here hoping for some advice.

I am looking to buy a used Skoda Octavia SE-L Automatic and was kindly hoping for some advice on a few things.  With my budget, I would need to buy a car likely from quite far away so test driving isn't a realistic option unfortunately.

1) I live in outer London so do a mix of city, dual carriageway and occasional motorway driving. I was hoping to get the 2.0l TSI if possible, but wanted to ask if the 1.4l / 1.5l are quick enough if not as I do like want some shift from standstill and to be able to overtake comfortably?

2) Is there a big MPG difference between the 1.4l / 1.5l TSI and the 2.0 TSI.

3) I understand the 1.4l / 1.5 l has a dry DPG and the 2.0l has a wet DPG. Are they both reliable generally?

4) Is it better to get higher mileage e.g 65k - 80k or lower mileage at under 50k? I know many may say lower mileage but my worry is that a car that has a low mileage will not have been driven enough.

5) Any advice on where to buy privately as all the cars seem to be through dealers which charge a higher premium of course.

Many Thanks

Welcome. Do you mean Octavia? Prob sky best to post in the Octavia forum relevant to the model if so.

Hi Travs,

No, I am looking at getting a Skoda Superb Petrol Automatic.

Ok just clarifying as the title says Superb but your first post says you’re looking to buy an Octavia.

Apologies, can't seem to edit the first post for some reason.

If you are worried about dry clutch DSG on the 1.4/1.5, just avoid them.

The 2.0tsi 190ps version would still give decent mpg, at least 45mpg on motorways. As reference, the 2.0tsi 4x4 will struggle to get above 45mpg.

Older 2.0 220ps versions are not bad too. The difference in fuel economy for all of them are marginal unless you are doing moon mileages. In which case you should be getting a diesel or something else.

I have a SE L  Hatchback  with the 2.0TSI 190 engine and DQ381  7 speed wet clutch DSG . The engine suits the car great with good power delivery and quiet.

Only issue i find is if your mileage is mostly short town running you will be lucky to average much more than 32 mpg , however as @KeteCantek has said above on motorways and good dual carriageways you can see 45 mpg.

Other than that the car has been trouble free

Hope this helps you

Thank you for the responses. I was originally looking at getting another Octavia but read that the Superb feels much nicer to me drive. Can anyone who has driven the two confirm if there is indeed a difference?

Hi all, still looking. Any advice on whether the 1.4 tsi or the 1.5 tsi is better?

  • 3 weeks later...

1.4 tsi is the better unit (IMO) we've owned both. The 1.5 even with the supposed "fix" from the dealer was difficult in traffic and suffered with hesitation etc but your mileage may vary.
