Nearly 2 years of ownership.

Featured Replies

Hello. Been a while. My red karoq sportline is nearly 2 years old. 16500 miles and is off again to France again his week.

I also drive my wife's cupra born v2 regularly.

Plus points:

1- It's red. Not many red skodas around

2-Average fuel economy is 47mpg. I don't drive fast nor slow. Normal driving

3-Good space for kids and boot decent size

4-Well specced as standard. I added red, ACC and spare wheel. I would add winter pack next time

5-Quick enough if you are in the mood  on a decent road and no wife or kids

6-Love the pan roof.

7- Front seats are comfy and supportive.

Not so good:

1) Oil pump broke causing car to go into engine failure. Covered under warranty.

2) Storage lid on dash vibrates at 1500 rpm. it is blue tacked shut. Couldn't face Skoda investigations and then saying is intermittent.

3) Consistent vibration from passenger front door panels. Is very quiet but annoying. I just turn stereo up!

4) Back board rattles. The fix... Backboard lives in the garage not the car.

5) Car connects to wife's phone over mine.

6) No traction if driving quick from stationary. Wheels spin.

7) obviously an ICE car isn't slick as an EV.

On the whole I'm pleased with my car. Is good family transport and apart from build quality issues( which seems common). Am looking to change  to  a newer used car; either kodiaq sportline or Octavia vrs estate. Depend on deals and equity in my car(if any😞). Thanks for reading.

I’m in a similar position to yourself, SportLine coming up to 2 years old in March that also seems to develop a new rattle or squeak every other week.

I’d like to say I’ve enjoyed the car but it’s left me feeling a bit meh in all honesty, not sure what gearbox you have but I have the manual with a 1.5 TSI which I find a truly awful combination.

I have however also decided to give Škoda another go but not with another Karoq.

Did the oil pump issue cause a total engine failure?

Our 6 year old Karoq is still rattle free, just as well as I can't stand rattles in a car. Whenever I've had them it's always been caused by me, eg once caused by my spare glasses case that I keep in the car.

Hi. In the same boat! The oil pump broke two part around it. Dashboard lit up like it was Christmas and car sounded like a lorry. I have the DSG . Two other people have a Tiguan and Superb. They have creaks too.

We got ours (wife's really) at just over a year old and it's just coming up to its first MOT.

Had a number of issues with it, and just as disappointing has been the dealer, a local family owned place that everyone thinks is marvellous but they must have taken a dislike to me.  Latest thing is them flatly denying the MOT is covered by the Approved Used package. I emailed the salesguy - I got a read receipt but he hasn't bothered replying.

Contrast that to the late mk1 Tiguan wife had from new until 8yrs old and was looked after by a small VW dealer who were pretty marvellous.  Would have had a mk2 Tiguan but wife thought it was too big!

Not great service at all. Back to VW for you?

I don't know really.  We usually buy new and keep until some reason to change - the Tiguan was an EU6 diesel and as the All In cover came to end I was bit panicky about what could go wrong.

We recently bought an EV for one of our daughters - she does a lot of miles so went for Hyundai Kona mainly due to warranty and that (touch wood) Hyundai seem to have cracked EVs.  However my wife (who normally takes no interest in cars whatsoever) was very taken with Volvo XC/EX40.  I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but we see absolutely loads of them around us.

Interestingly I'm running that daughter's 2018 SEAT Ateca at the moment.  It was made in the Karoq factory and is, of course, effectively the same car as Karoq.  It's a 1 litre manual and it's nudging 90K miles but it drives really nicely - it feels more planted on the road, yet is somehow more complaint on poor surfaces.  It's on 17" wheels vs Karoq's 18's, but the difference in feel is more marked than that would suggest.

My petrol Sportline is also 2 years old, being an early 23 plate. Due to various factors, I have only done 5000 odd miles (have a van), and in that time I have had nothing go wrong. Mine was a pre-reg, 3months old but only 30 miles on clock, and I have the full remaining of three years warranty. Nothing fallen off, nothing broke, no rattles except for one behind dash, that started after hitting a huge pothole. Lasted a week until I hit another! Oh yes, noisy wipers - must get some Bosch ones.

There are a few of us 🙂

I changed the wipers within days of getting ours - how on earth can they be so bad!

The a/c is noisy in hot weather - like there's another fan behind the dash,  They changed the compressor but by the time they did it the weather had cooled down so it wasn't so noticeable but it's still there.  Our Kamiq is silent and so is the Ateca (although the Ateca's compressor did fail too).   I had a courtesy Karoq one time and that was noisy too.   It's enough that we turn the a/c off if not needed (but run it for a bit most trips).

Garage had the car for days trying to find the front suspension noise - turned out to be the strut pistons knocking on the bump stops.  There's a TSB that says to grease them but it's coming back again.

DSG judders a bit from rest.

Car is just generally crashy and rattly.  As mentioned earlier, the 18" 50% profile tyres don't help, but the Kamiq is also on 18's at 45% and that drives fine.

Nearly 2 years in for me, my Phoenix Orange Karoq SEL has been a good servant. I'm very particular about rattles and squeaks and can confirm that there's nothing too persistent.

This is my second Karoq, so they can't be that bad. Both have done consistent 44mpg in a city full of hills.

Normal Bridgestone Tyres are absolutely disastrous in winter round me, so I have a set of winter wheels and Tyres.

Would I buy a 3rd Karoq, so far, yes

Seems to be hit and miss. Good examples and not bad ones, just flawed( but we love them anyway). Love phoenix orange colour.

I thought that maybe they might have improved the wipers when I got my new Karoq in October ? . Wrong! they were just as bad as before, in fact I think they were worse!. Fortunately I had taken the precaution of putting back the Skoda originals on my old car before it went back!. So the 3yr old Bosch ones are now back on the new car! . In fact I had managed to tolerate the rear wiper on the old car but had to get a Bosch replacement for the new one!

At last service, I was told wipers had it, but did not fit new Škoda ones. Instead, said I would be better off going to Halfords!😂

My 1.6tdi sel dsg was registered last week of 2018 and I bought it June 2023. It's about 66k on the clock. The Bridgestone tyres on it were crap and I changed the wipers a week after owning it. Otherwise it's been one service at skoda and new discs and pads all round. No rattles or squeaks, it's near enough a perfect car for me. Even if I were to replace it I couldn't think of anything better. I have no intentions of changing it though as long as it just needs service items

Another red Karoq, mine's metallic red 1.0 DSG SE Tech Karoq 5.5 yrs old from new and a pretty good story really but only do just over 6000mls per annum.  Engine is very very quiet save maybe for a slight agricultural roughness starting from standstill particularly from cold + very slight drone around 1700rpm when working hard uphill.

Performance more than adequate for my needs, though admittedly I pull the changer into sport mode for overtaking, due to the high geared character of the car.  It's really good on motorways, accelerating from 70-80mph in 7th no fuss.  I don't need a racing car and let's face it, does anybody?  DSG helps alot here extracting surprising performance and economy from the tiny 1.0 engine in a biggish car.

Only DSG downside is moving off quickly from standstill - conventional autos do this better.  I'm a great ACC fan as I've said before.  Easy to drive and good visibility - I had a rear camera fitted at the start too - invaluable.  Been trouble free, though had warnings about a front damper and rear discs at the last service.

Niggles

--    Pedals offset to right, so no resting place for right foot on those long, pedal less, motorway drives that ACC encourages.  VW T-Rock does this properly.

--   Changed wipers to Bosch soon after buying, so no longer a niggle.

--   Ride pretty good except way it thumps & jerks over road ridges.  Changing from Bridgestones on 17" wheels, to all weather tyres on 16" helped substantially, though still no Jag XJ6.

--    Some road noise - having the solid rear parcel shelf helps but batten stiffening on underside + weighting with mats really reduced this alot + some bitumen pads on boot metal floor + wheel tyre change noted above.

--   Seat could do with more adjustment for my long legs (need an extra cushion) and don't like front tipping down as seat moves back.

--   Silly plastic tables fixed to back of front seats.

--   Rear seat too low on non removeable seat version, like mine.

The problem is, I think the Karoq is coming to the end of its production life. 😞

The design is from 2015/16 so a decade old, despite face lifts, it is basically the same vehicle.   There is no hybrid or electric version and from 2030 no new ICE cars in the EU. (which also means the UK).

So the Karoq will be gone as a production car in 5 years. That said, it is likely to hold or increase its value from 2030 🙂
Hopefully mine will last another 10 years on from that, by which time I doubt I will be driving....

I assume velvet red is different from metallic red?  Or is it the same thing?

My manual 1.5 TSi SE L will be two years old in a couple of weeks.

It's had the second variable service today (at 35k miles) and I tend to have an oil & filter midway between so 4 oil changes thus far.

Mine has undergone numerous attempts to resolve noise from the front suspension, most recently a new front anti-roll bar and also required a new steering motor shortly after I picked it up.

There are numerous cabin rattles, although I recently realised one was emanating from the rear seat headrests which is fixed by lowering them when we have no rear seat passengers.

The drivers door also has a rattle which has resisted attempts to resolve.

I find the ride fairly unforgiving, which is perhaps not a surprise given the fairly rudimentary rear suspension and 18" alloys. I do drive an XJ8 on Air Suspension, so perhaps not a fair comparison!

A switch to Michelin Cross-climates improved matters though 👍

Loving the Winter Pack+

During today's service the rear brake pads were replaced (under warranty), although I'm not yet sure why - will update when the paperwork comes through.

The heated rear Varioflex seats often come in handy and the car is often converted to a three seater with a huge boot.

I far prefer the button heavy Karoq cabin to the new Octavia with it's huge touchscreen.

Also pleased to have a car with no lane keeping or speed alerts, so may opt to keep it for the foreseeable in order to avoid the latest supposed driver 'aids'.

The car has never left us stranded, although the servicing main dealer did comment the battery needed a charge whilst servicing it today.

I have a C-Tek with the comfort connect permanently installed so will plug it in 👍

As ours is a similar age I'd be keen to hear about what the brake pad issue is - had to get the rear pads and discs done unexpectedly on daughter's Ateca (noted at 50% at previous service) and it was horribly expensive even with 10% off but didn't have time to shop around are argue about it.  I asked our village garage and they were iffy about whether their diagnostic kit could deal with the EPB.

I've mentioned it elsewhere but the Ateca (late 2018 model) rides so much better than the Karoq.  It is on 17" CrossClimates but the difference in the way the car feels "planted" on the road, yet is compliant over poor surfaces, feels far greater than just inch smaller wheels would suggest.  We've run winter wheel and tyre sets on other cars and there's not been a noticeable difference.

TBH I haven't found the 'aids' too intrusive. The speed alert gives up after 3 or 4 chimes and its not that loud. The only time I find the lane keeping a pain is joining a dual carriageway or motorway. I wouldnt normally indicate if there's no traffic approaching but if you don't, then it will try and 'tug' the steering to stop you joining the carriageway. It doesnt take much to override it though...

I don't mind the passive aids, but I don't want the active ones like ACC, Lane keeping and the speed limiting by reading the road signs. I don't trust the software.

and the speed limiting by reading the road signs.

The speed limiter can be set permanently to warn only , that's how I've got mine. Lane keeping automatically comes on at each start. I don't have ACC on mine so that's not a problem.

Likewise, I've been in software development for most of my working life!

You can set the speed limiter software by software.... (see recursion)   You trust the software to do as it is told?

Automotive SW is better than the average consumer or IT software, but there has been some appalling automotive software, it has been improving, but whole areas still need a complete overhaul. Companies use weasel words to get round the regulations. That and "a few rouge developers"  🙂

The service advisor thought it might relate to a TPI - I should know more later as the paperwork wasn't ready when I collected the car yesterday - I'll let you know 👍

Yes - rear brake pads were replaced as a result of a TPI. I'd noticed a noise from the rear brakes when setting off and had mentioned this when dropping the car off yesterday.
