Hankook tyres cracking

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

The original 3 year old Hankook tyres on my 2022 Skoda Kodiaq SEL Executive are cracking on the outside edge. Has anyone else had this experience? The tread depth is 4mm but based on this image, should I be replacing them? They Have done 23,000 miles.

Any recommendations for new tyres? 20250218_141403.thumb.jpg.b431bca9b177580258f000ee33f2ec3f.jpg

TIA.

Tyre pressures too low for the load carried?

Yeah maybe I am a fatter git than I thought 😄

Tyre cracking posts over the years on here with all sorts of the brands.

Often someone posts saying the Tyre Fitter says 'We see that lots with Michelin's'.  Or Dunlops, Pirelli, etc etc.

It can happen with any brand / models of tyres in any location world wide.

If it was common with Michelin that could be just because of the number of vehicles fitted with them.  They are no more liable to cracking than any others tyres.

I think that Hankook changed their compound a year or so back, to address this, though MOT test probably accepts this “minor cracking” on newish tyres.

Certainly my younger daughter and her husband binned the original rear tyres on their 2019 SEAT Arona because of this, as I would probably have done.

They replaced these Hankook tyres with a newer version - which matched the recently replaced front tyres (car bought used at 3 years old), tyre tests data suggested/stated that this new version had improved compound and other “good” changes.

Very helpful, thank you

I had the exact same tyres and the exact same issue. I complained to Hankook and they said I had to direct my complaint to Skoda UK. You can imagine how that turned out. I posted the debacle on here somewhere.

I foolishly bought some Hankook tyres for another vehicle, and they cracked sooner and far worse. I’ll never purchase Hankook tyres again.

I’m now running Michelin Crossclimates and Goodyear Vector 4seasons.

I’m on my second / third set of Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres as originally fitted (now at 105,000 miles) and the backs now have 58,000 miles on them and still 6mm tread (MOT last week), however are slightly cracking on the edges which is likely to get them before the tread wears off.

Not sure if others have had the same experience with them on here, but I’m really pleased with them and the seal inside worked great when I had a roofing bolt in the front and it fixed itself when I pulled the bolt out!

Im sure I’ll get accused of driving like an OAP but I don’t really!!

I have one Michelin which is the original on a 19 registered car. The tyre has covered 65,000 miles. In the last 2 years minor cracking similar to the first picture was mentioned at MOT. This year the same tyre was still on the car and cracking wasn't mentioned at all. The tread is still legal, but is certainly reaching the end of its life.
