Varta is not an OE supplier

Just for reference - mine is Varta from the factory.

2.0 TDI 150 hp 2016y (bought it new).

Useful thread and information here, I need to measure mine on engine start.

It's likely mine is as well. As I bought it as an ex-demo at 6 months I can't be sure.

I had a 2019 Superb 3 (company car) which came with a Varta battery.

I’ve just found a photo of it.

Edit: I've just checked the Octavia and that has a Varta AGM fitted, which has the appearance of OEM fitment, rather than aftermarket.  I don't know if it's original, as I've only had the car a matter of weeks.

Can I check the serial number with OBDeleven?

There is usually a date stamp into the top face of the negative terminal, format is WWYY. Stamp matching production year would indicate battery is probably original.

Thanks for that.  Very helpful.

I've just checked the negative terminal and it's stamped 05-15, so end of January.  The car was registered on 3rd March 15, so it would appear to be original.

I will give it a charge tomorrow, as it isn't being used much at the moment.  In fact it hasn't been used much since the last owner traded it in last August.  The battery seems to be holding up well, as the start-stop seems to work whenever I forget to turn it off 😀

@daveo138 Just a note, yours is actually EFB - not AGM. Still not doing too badly at 10 years old though.

The EFB was in the old Superb.

The 10 year old battery is AGM.

Probably wasn’t clear from my original post, but I knew what I meant 😁

Thanks for the information on checking the battery manufacturing date.

I've checked mine and it looks to be the original battery as it has 29 15 on the negative pole to the battery, so not quite 10 years old as it appears to be made in July of 2015 but still not bad going.

I have bit the bullet and ordered up an new battery as for the faults I have with the car at the moment.

I have since bought an OBDeleven scanner and have done a scan and about a dozen faults were shown some were intermittent but about half were reading as low voltage to different sensors and bulbs but they are working, hopefully a new battery will clear some of them atleast fingers crossed.

If anyone is thinking of buying a new battery shortly I ordered a Bosch S5A08 70AH 760A from Battery group as I looked at Tayna batteries as recommended on here but I did some looking around at prices and the Battery group site came out cheaper for the same battery by about £14 cheaper with standard delivery as they had a 10% code off at the moment, i'm not sure how long that will last as it said it was ending soon.

The Battery group is a slower delivery service they quote 2 to 4 days on there standard delivery so unless you need it quicker and then Tayna would be the better option as it's next day but will cost you a little bit more.

I was looking at the Varta battery as thats whats on the car but the bosch is the equivalent and I have read up they are made in the same factory and the Varta is more expensive on both sites.

Thanks again for all the replys I appreciate the help.

Good point about Varta and Bosch.

When I had a Rover 75, I replaced the Bosch battery with a Varta from Tayna. As you can see from the photo, the casings are identical.

There is also a discount code for Tayna for a 5% discount - NUMBER27YT

Hi, how did you get on with this?

I had a very similar problem with my 2015 150hp Scout. Since I got it, the stop start didn't work, one of the display messages was 'high power consumption'. Checked everything I could with a meter, couldn't find any current draw with the amp clamp, battery seemed healthy but same problem even after a few good charges with the battery off the car. Took it to my local garage, they condemned the battery, so I fitted a new one.

Problem wasn't cured. Few months go by, got sick of it again, did lots of googling, decided I needed the coding checking. Took it to a local VAG specialist, they told me the battery didn't need coding on this car and the battery was knackered. Dubious of this given the battery was only a couple of months old, and having read various things about coding, I tracked down a guy I used to work with on the spanners who I knew had VCDS.

He hooked it up, there are three battery specific things that need to be coded, one of them was the battery amp hours. My battery was 130ah, the coding was for 13ah. Easy as pie he recoded it to what it should be, 130ah..

Problem solved, stop start working fine, no dash messages, all good.

So the car thought it had a tiny capacity battery so it didn't want to engage the stop start in fear of flattening the battery.

Really pleased with the fix, really disappointed with the so-called VAG specialist not knowing about battery coding.

Oh and just to add, mine was a Varta battery from the factory, and it was in fine condition, despite being condemned.

The voltages, old lead-acid batteries used a fixed alternator voltage of 13.5 - 14.5 volts, anything less or more was a defective regulator in the alternator. Newer AGM types are charged on demand, the voltages can fluctuate from 12 - 16 ish volts, depending g on what the battery management calls for.

Thanks for posting the update - serves to stress how important correct adaptation is when replacing the battery.

The original battery could well have been fine only the system had been set to 13a instead of 130a by the previous owner.
