Checking Oil

Featured Replies

Bit odd but on my new Sportline Edition it is virtually impossible to check/remove the dipstick when the engine is cold. When the engine is still warm (after switching off) you can remove the dipstick though. I know there is differing opinions as to when to check oil level - seems many now say to check when the engine is warm/ 10-15 mins after switching off, but I do like the option of at least checking the oil level when the engine is stone cold. On my old SEL you could check the oil level when cold but my new Sportline is virtually impossible when cold and I dont want to forcefully remove the dipstick!

Any thoughts/is this normal - both my old SEL and new Sportline have the 1.5 DSG engine

The oil check procedure is designed for checking the level when you're out on a run so the engine will be hot. Typically. stop for fuel, refuel, check oil. So hot, with engine stopped for a few mins.

In practice I find the level to be pretty similar when checking stone cold. The dipstick does take a good tug.

Checking cold is simply clever, engine not started, oil drained, before a journey.

(the way 1.2 44 kW engines with 2.8 litres are checked.)

But then the oil level should be checked parked on the level, oil at Normal Operating Temperature and after a few minutes.

90*oC or so is not Warm. Near twice the heat you have a bath.

A few minutes is 4 or 5, not 15 or 20 minutes of hanging about once you stop for fuel or what ever.

Not Rocket Science.

Tyres checked cold. (Unless trying to see why a TPMS warning.)

Oil checked HOT, but know where it is when cold.

& UNDERSTAND AREA A. Above Cross Hatch.

2nd Page. 'Warm' is a Skoda translation error, German to Czech to English...

Thanks for the info, although I found today with only 400 miles on the clock and about to do a very long journey, the oil was so clean it was very difficult to see the level.

Hi

Are you referring to the fact that the dipstick is near impossible to remove when cold? On my 2022 1.5 petrol I am afraid the yellow plastic grip is going to break, as it is so jammed in. However, once removed in can be replaced and removed easily, very odd.
