2024 Mk3.5 2.0TSi L&K or 2024 Mk4 1.5eTSi SEL ?

Featured Replies

So I;ve had 16 Skoda's but I'm not getting on with my current Karoq, I hate the driving position and the seat.

I've never had a Superb but I have had a Passat from new back in 2010 and my Father in Law still has it .

So my must have's are Electric seats driver and passenger, petrol and auto.

I've currenlty reserved a 2024 Mk3.5 2.0TSi L&K with just 5k miles.

But here's my dilema, although I love the exterior there's no ignoring the Mk4's interior is ten years more modern and way upto date. For the same price as the Mk3.5 L&K I could get a Mk4 1.5TSi SEL.

Going for the Mk4 I'd miss out of the extra power, Canton Audio, DCC, Heated screen, trizone climate etc but the Mk4 has more driver aids and the more modern interior.

So what's everyone's thoughts? Anyone driven both, do they drive much differently?

Thanks in Advance

Lee

Personally: Mk3.

The interior isn’t dated, so as new as the mk4 is, it’s a solution looking for a problem.

Mk4 driver aids: The 3 already has self park, blind spot, ACC, lane assist, fatigue detection and brake assist for parking. Not a bad list. What does the mk4 have in addition out of interest?

Also plenty of stuff has been tried and tested on the 3 so you can solve/improve all sorts.

I am, however, woefully unindependent in my opinion…

Missing out on those very things would b hard pass on the mk4 Superb for me.

All those things make a big difference for everyday driving and enjoyment.

The things I can see on the driver aids are the upgraded Lane Assist Plus and traffic jam assist.

Also as standard the Mk4 gets massage seats but the L&K I have reserved has them has an option.

And I'd prefer the 18's on the SEL rather than the 19's on the L&K although it does look nice with 19's.

The car should be in the dealer next week so test drive will tell all I suppose.

I'm biased as I have a 2022 SEL Superb which I really like, but given your choice I would take the mk3.5 as the mk4 has lots of software problems many of which are still unresolved, I'm sure the mk4 will be a lovely car once the software issues are sorted out but until then buyer beware, have a quick read from the link below.

Sounds like a great Mk3 if it has massage seats in. Otherwise pretty much all the toys is there for you. Interesting that it looks like Vegas but have been filled in a bit? Like aero-covers in the wheel?

Not seen it in the flesh yet but they don't look like inserts.

Found them

Oh yes - guess that is the way of aero ——> economical.

What’s the colour Lee? Looks a flat dark blue. Bit of green in there too 👌🏼

One particular bee in my bonnet is face-level air vents, for keeping my face cool - just like in my 2016 car. This has become a rarity these days, and the ones in the latest Superb seem positioned to control the temperature of your nether regions instead. I suppose you choose your car according to which part of your anatomy is most prone to overheating - more critical than many of the other things that get complained about, for me at least.

Either way, I find the (no-cost option) rear wiper to be an absolute boon.

Petrol Blue according to the spec sheet.

Good point re-vents, and there's always the ventilated seats for warm nether regions 😄

Yes it has the rear wiper as well.

Ironically some companies do a rear wiper delete kit.

Ventilated seats are awesome in the summer.

Also, the 2.0 DNFE engine is a bit special

I changed my 2016 2.0 TDi for a 2023 2.0 TSi in October last year (both are L&K). The 2023 has reversing camera and rear wiper, neither of which were fitted to the 2016. With the 2016, reversing wasn't always easy on a wet day but now it's so easy to see what's behind when going backwards.

The 2023 also has ventilated seats that weren't fitted to the 2016, so I need to wait until it's warmer to try them out, though I had them before on a 2012 Superb.

This one was registered April 2024 so must have been one of the last I suppose. It's the most expensive Mk3 onsale that I can see which is probably why I've had second thoughts about getting a Mk4 as they are similar money.

Hopefully it's in Tuesday and I can make up my mind.

As the man said, opinions are personal, but I do not consider the III interior dated. And just the fact that I can push a button and also set a function on the screen is a double bonus.

I do not like the IV interior, I am not a fan of TV screens in the dashboard, otherwise I would be loving Musk's creatures, which I don't exactly for that reason.

DCC is a very useful feature, heated screen same but this depends where you are.

The power ... well, to each its own, but the only time in my almost 30 years of driving that I felt I had "too much power" and less was better, was when driving a nearly 50hp enduro KTM during my wild dirt track period.

The Superb is a large, heavy car .... and most times, Jeremy is right!

Ah I forgot, from experience - don't use the rims as a decision factor to buy or not to buy a car!

These are replaceable, and is a marginal expense compared to the entire cost of a car ....

It might just be me but most people I know who have lane assist don’t rate it. I turned mine off after a few days. Unless you’re a driver that struggles to stay on your side of the carriageway or lane then this is truly just a gimmick. I’ve never missed it since turning it off and it won’t get turned back on again.

Both of which you’ll never use imo..

Whoops…. Just get the MK3.

Lane Assist is not a gimmick, it is a useful feature and a safety aid as well.

BUT

it works "well" only in combination with a near perfect infrastracture that contemplates:

  • proper road lane markings;

  • proper and even road surfaces, without uneven imperfections, patches/repairs, steps, and the such;

  • absence of potholes, not-leveled to the surface manholes, tears/cracks in the surface;

  • arranged and disciplined traffic, with proper and manageable traffic flow, and drivers which possess a calm and predictable behavior;

  • well marked and arranged traffic direction, for example proper lane change flows to allow merging/unmerging smoothly and predictably, without danger/conflict to other drivers.

Considering the general lack of attention to these factors, is not suprising system gets turned off by most people .... the day we will have a decent - at least - road infrastructure solving the items above, we may consider Lane Assist not a bother, but the useful aid it is - or supposed to be 😉

I have used it maybe 10% of my time spent behind the wheel so far, as it is a bother considering all the above ....

Well just had a phone call from the dealers and car is in.

Test drive later today.

So the car drove like a dream and the 2.0TSi with DQ381 is so much smoother than 1.5TSi with DQ200

Shouldn't have worried about the 19's even with the DCC in Normal it was fine.

The only thing I'm not happy about is the paint. It's 10 months old and done 6k miles but has obviously been down to the local £7 car wash as there's some swirls and hasing.

Not the end of the world but dissapointing at over £31k.

Dealers are working me some figers as I want a bit more off to correct the paint.

Always disappointing when it looks bad up close.

Looking at a good few hundred to have someone clean, decontaminate, correct and protect the paint. Should be a ballpark figure for it.

Anyway, don’t let that take the shine off the experience (pardon the pun).

Going to test drive a Mk4 for comparison?

I had an hour test drive in the 2.0 TSI L&K Mk3 and just around the block in a 1.5 TSi SEL Estate Mk4.

That drive around the block was enough. I much prefer a wet clutch DSG and the Mk4 SEL felt lumpy with standard suspension and 18's.
