Self inflicted headlight disaster. Hoping someone can help.

Featured Replies

Hi

As explained in the title, I have caused myself some issues whilst attempting to fit an aftermarket auto headlights kit.

I have investigated to the limits of my knowledge. I was hoping someone could advise on how to repair.

Fabia VRS 2011. Old style "big" 17 pin light switch.

Fitted auto headlight box + switch and the following happened:

Dipped headlights permanently on. No control from switch.

Rear lights permanently on. No control from switch.

Speedo and Rev counter illumination does not light.

Dash "Dipped lights" tell tale light on.

Realising there was a problem, I removed the box and refitted original switch:

Dipped headlights permanently off. No control from switch.

Rear lights permanently off. No control from switch.

Speedo and Rev counter illumination still does not light.

Dash "Dipped lights" tell tale light off.

I can go between these 2 states by swapping components back and forth.

All fuses look OK but if any can suggest specific one to check, I can double check

Main beam/flash works as normal in either state.

My assumption is that I have cooked the BCM / Headlight control module. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

This has not been my best work

Looks like I ordered an auto headlight kit for a VW T5, which is the reason for the problem. Same plug, different pins.

After the some great support from the guys over at the Ross-Tech forum, I started again from the beginning with assistance from a friend. Turns out it was a blown fuse after all.

On a Fabia VRS 2011 dipped headlights/tail lights are on Fuse 35 "Power supply of ignition switch" 5A according to the owners manual. The icon on the fuse panel is a book with a question mark.

Ben, good that you got it sorted. It never rains but it pours, no biggy, or even littley, at all, you've also posted your thread in the Fabia Mk3 2014-2021) forum. I'm not throwing stones as I live in a greenhouse. 🙃

That might be where you went wrong after fitting the parts as that probably refers to reading the Owner's Manual to find what fuse covers what. Reading and referencing to the car's 'Owner's Manual' has saved many owners, including me, time hassle and money by unnecessary visits to Dealerships, garages, mechanics and auto-electricians. Even for repairs it's worth having a look at instructions and information which 'Owner's Manuals' can have a lot of. Of course that is when VWŠkoda puts the correct information in their 'Owner's Manuals' unfortunately that's no always so with fuse allocations but they get it right most of the times so still worth a look.

I'm sure you have a brighter outlook now. 🙂

I actually posted this in a different wrong forum but it was relocated to this wrong forum 🤣

You're absolutely right. I was using the "what could possibly go wrong" technique.
