VCDS Help: High Beam Assist

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2015 Octavia VRs estate, 2.0TSI pre-facelift, with lane assist fitted (which works perfectly). MQB_MFK driver assistance module A5

I have been following the following two guides on how to enable high beam assist using VCDS (I am using obdeleven but the result is the same).

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/299424-octavia-iii-vcds-adaptations-tried-and-tested/page/2/#findComment-3821291

Also tried the additional step of changing the "ENG10578-ENG10901-Fernlicht_assistent-Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung - AFS: BCM-Fernlicht Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung auf "AFS: FLA: BCM-Fernlicht" setzen"

from https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/455279-problem-enabling-high-beam-assist-vcds/#findComment-5115563

After completing the guide, the option for Dynamic Light Assist appears in the Light menu of the MIB. If I then push the stalk away from me, the HBA icon appears at the bottom for about half a second then an error pops up saying "Fault: Light assist".

I have managed to reverse everything and put it back to how it was so no major dramas but I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue and knew how to resolve it? :)

Its a slightly different setup on MK3 cars to MK3.5 cars.

On MK3.5, there is a camera that does a multitude of functions, but on the MK3's, its different modules.

You probably have Lane Assist, but that is a different sensor to the sensor for high beam assist. Have a look at the back of your mirror - and if you have the appropriate sensor, it should show up as a black square on the back of the cabin mirror. No square - means no sensor and without retrofitting, you won't be able to do high beam assist.

Ahh that would make sense.

There's two sensors in the windscreen glass, then there is a small square on the back of the rearview mirror with a sensor inside, but not sure if it's the right one, pics attached.

and yet...there seems to be an intermediate option!

It looks like you have a light sensor (updated) and a camera in your car. I think we might need a full scan of the car to determine the modules and then we can advise on coding.

Here's the info pages from my 09 Central and A5 assistance modules.

Sorry I am not totally sure how to do a full scan with OBDEleven

Thanks :)

Just went to try this again, same result. realised in my original post I said Dynamic Light Assist, that's not correct. it's just 'Light Assist', my understanding that the Dynamic version will block out portions of the headlight beam, which I am fairly sure my headlight unit's do not have that feature.

However after coding I checked the faults and along with the "Fault: Light Assist" on the maxidot display, I get fault code U112300 databus error value received in OBDEleven. So it's like it a setting is incorrect somewhere and expecting a different value?

These are the exact coding steps I have taken:

Module 09 - Central

Long Coding

From:

Byte 02 - Lighting = Bi-Xenon headlights without light assist (PR 8IG/8IP+8G0)

To:

Byte 02 - Lighting = Bi-Xenon headlights with light assist (PR 8IG/8IP+8G1)

Adapdation

Meneusteuerung Fernlichtassistent = From "not present" to "present"

Meneusteuerung Fernlichtassistent Werkseinstellung = From "not present" to "present" (tried with and without this, doesn't appear to make a difference)

Module A5 - Driver Assistance

Long Coding

coding_Light_Assist = from "no_Light_Assist" to "High_Beam_Assist"

Though interestingly having a little poke around now in Module A5 (driver assistance) long coding, byte 09. The headlight type is set to "Bi-xenon with DLA", the available options are Halogen, Bi-xenon, Bi-xenon with DLA and LED Headlights.

I have never changed this value, and I took a full backup of everything before I changed anything, just cross referenced this to be sure. So either I DO have DLA capable headlights, or the car has maybe had a scuffed coding attempt in it's past?

I have the dynamic bending lights, where the headlights follow the steering angle (if it makes any difference)

High Beam Assist (for cars with Lane Assist Camera):
Ensure light switch is in the OFF position, wipers not on auto, doors closed and ignition on, before starting

1. Control Unit 09 - Central Electrics

2. Control unit Long Coding

3. Byte 02

4. Bit 0-2: "03 Lighting Bi-Xenon with Light Assist"

5. Control Unit 09 - Central Electrics

6. Security code - 31347

7. Adaptation

8. Assistance Light Functions-Menuestuerung Fernlichtassistent

9. New Value: Present

10. Assistance Light Functions-Menuestuerung Fernlichtassistent Werkseinstellung

11. New Value: Present

12. Control Unit A5

13. Security code - 20103

14. Control unit Long Coding

15. Byte 02

16. Bit 0-7: "01 coding_Light/High_beam_assist"
Optional settings
17. Controller A5
18. Security code - 20103
19. Adaptation
20. High beam assist urban detection area – Switch to No
21. Speed that HBA active set to 20kph
22. Speed that HBA deactivate set to 10kph
23. Change lux code to 10
Finally, go into the vehicle menu on the head unit, go to light settings and select ‘light assist’
Push the left stalk towards the front of the car, it should show the HBA logo at the bottom of the Maxidot.

Remember to select the green tick at each stage of the adaption, otherwise the changes you've made won't stick.

Thank you but, this is exactly what i've done as above (minus the optional bits).

Tried the optional bits and made no difference, still comes up with a fault.

I have managed to successfully get traffic sign recognition working, and my lane assist works great from factory. Not sure if this helps. Also bumping incase anyone can shed some light on this :)

Bump, wondering if anyone knows what the issue is here?

I have tried coding the A5/09 modules in either order, and cleared fault codes before moving onto the next module.

Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recogniton work fine (other than the known Restricted message)

  • 6 months later...

Hi, I had exactly the same fault as op which was because I hadn’t selected option 03 in the BCM 09 coding but had selected the last option.

This was wrong as the last option is dynamic light assist which is too advanced for the Mk3.

Option 3 is just light assist.

Switched to this and all good.

Hi, glad you got it sorted.

Unfortunately the issue for me was that the software version of my A5 module (windscreen camera) is too old.

You have a 5Q0 camera, right? The FLA (Front Light Assist) is activated differently on this camera than on the 3Q0 camera. I've never had any problems with it.

5Q0 980 653 software version 0052.

What is the different procedure?

For 5Q0

Control unit 09 > Access authorization: 31347 > Adaptation > Channel "Assistance lighting functions - Menu control High beam assist" > Set value to "present"

Control unit 09 > Coding > Byte 02 > Set bits 0-2 to "03 Bi-Xenon headlights with Light Assist"

Control unit A5 > Coding > Byte 02 > Set bits 0-7 to "01 coding_Light_Assist High_Beam_Assist"

Thanks, from memory this is what I did and still had the error. But I will try again this evening and report back. :)
