Skoda Octavia 1.8t vrs

Featured Replies

hi im just wondering if anyone could help?

I bought a skoda vrs 2004-2005 1.8t auq engine recently it developed a red oil flashing warning light. there was oil still in the engine, so i thought oil pressure switch i changed that drove and it came back on again. engine started getting noisy

i read up on a few bits and ended up cleaning the pick up strainer. It had little bits of orange plastic in when inspecting underneath nothing was lose cleaned all up put back together etc. it drove without power and engine sounds absolutely fine on inspecting the turbo its doesn't move so i suppose its seized solid. does anyone know what kind of turbo i have? i have a part number but there is nothing else stamped on the turbo part number is 53041015160

hopefully after all this is red oil light stays off!

thanks kieran

(sorry if this is the wrong thread im new to skodas and the forum)

Hello, welcome to the forum.

I'd consider a failed oil pump as the first suspect, depending on how long the engine was run after the oil pressure failure indicator lit, it is likely that your engine has suffered significant damage.

All vehicle instructions I have seen mandate immediate engine stop and recovery if oil pressure fails.

Highly probable that turbo seizure is the result of oil pressure failure - not vice-versa.

I ran it till home. When I done the strainer etc new oil etc on start up it’s quiet and runs okay? Would an oil pressure test tell me anything? Would you no? On looking in the rocket cover it’s does pump a little oil up but I’m not sure how much oil is meant To pressure up there?

You'll have a K03s turbo, found on many variants of the 1.8T. You shouldn't have issues finding a replacement. However, I would be more concerned about the health of the engine if any of it got starved of oil.

Surprisingly they are hard to come by where I live so I’m going to have to travel if i want to get a new engine/turbo it’s runs now without a turbo so I’m not to sure. Would a blocked oil strainer cause it to have a red oil flashing light I’ve attached a picture of the orange bits IMG_5879.png

Quite possibly. It looks like it has somehow ingested parts of the dipstick!

Of course why didn’t I think of that! It looks brand new aswell. 😅 it’s all clean now and fresh everything!

Can you post another image with the extraneous bits on a sheet of white paper?

Ahhh sorry I threw them. I’m pretty sure like paws has said someone has changed it and snapped some down the hole easily done. I suppose the oil pressure runs at 10-15 psi when idle and 50psi when at 3k revs

I think I have seen a figure quoted of around 2 to 3 bar at high rate if fitted with dual pressure oil pump, bit I don't know if that applies to 1.8

I appreciate all your guys help this is idle

Can’t add the other photo but at 3k revs it’s just under the 5bar

A little hard to read that gauge due to scale and parallax - but that looks about 1 to 1.5 bar. Another post on this forum, for a 2012 1.8t gives 1.8 bar on low setting and 3.3 bar on high.

Ahh I got no clue 😅 don’t wanna put a new turbo on if the pump broken 😅

Does anyone have a ko3s turbo for sale!?!

Kieran, if you are on any of the FB groups, seek out a guy called Gav. He breaks them all the time, and I’m sure he’ll have a couple on his shelf.

That’s it, at his own admission he is terrible at getting back to people including me. 😂

Thanks he had one posting Friday fingers crossed! Thankyou again

The orange bits could very well be instant gasket. Looks too much for it being a dipstick. Have had a few cars where someone has gone to town with it and ended up with more on the inside of engine than outside. Have a good look around engine especially rocker cover etc for traces of orange.

Hi Alasdair yes I had a look all seems okay! It was a very hard type of plastic I think they just knocked the lot down. If it was there was traces of black gasket sealant maybe? But couldn’t see no more orange stuff! I’m going to put another turbo on tommorow see how it runs fingers crossed 🤞 it all runs. I like the car and don’t wanna scrap it.

If it was hard then its not instant gasket so shoud be ok. If its running ok then hopefully a new turbo will be ok now the oil lift strainer is clean.

Yeah all cleaned out then I ran/drove it for a mile no light so fingers crossed I didn’t do any damage to the engine I appreciate everyone’s help and sure will be back if the car works fine!

Thanks all!
