What started as a nearside rear bearing replacement (aborted due to only having XZN 16 and not an 18) turned out to be a brake job.

I've been having a bit of rumbling for a while so probably need it done still.

I've never seen wear like this, outsides were a bit lipped but the insides were heavily lapped.

New discs and pads hopefully will sort a bit of the rumbling!

Should I expect this every time or will different brand change things now I've done them?

My OE discs only lasted 20k miles from new and looked worse than yours. Brembo discs fitted as replacements have now gone 20k and still look new, little wear, (but do get surface rust if left unused in the rain for a few days - soon clears off with use).

If you’ve got OE discs then expect it, I replaced mine with brembo coated discs and OE pads but wish I went with ATE ceramics as that’s what I’ll be going with for the fronts

Had my rears replaced years ago and been fine, I hardly drive my car but rear discs still look good

Had my rear discs and pads changed last Friday, the discs looked in exceptionally good condition with just a slight lip on the outer edge, which is to be expected given the mileage, nothing like the ones pictured above, from new they lasted 90k miles (pads were down to the last 10%).

How were the pads? From the looks of the discs, it would seem very little portion of the pad was actually working ... might be worth check proper caliper operation.

Ive changed to some other discs and pads now so hopefully will do better. I'm not sure if they were changed before my ownership but I'm on 90k miles now.

I do know I asked for them to be looked at before I bought the car but not certain they changed the discs or just the pads.

Mines just hit 90k. But not sure they've been done before hand or not.

They were awful. The matched the wear pattern seen there. The outboard faces had lips and areas that weren't swept too but nothing like the inboard faces.

Hi did you change them yourself? Mine need doing and are only 17k but 5 years old..

I've seen a few youtube tutorials which look good but the polish guy doing the videos is a bit too slap dash for my liking so want to do it properly

Yes it’s an A6 but isn’t going to be massively different

Note: a lot of pads these days are directional with arrows or crescent moons, so make sure you get them the correct way and piston side if there only one directional pointer

Yeah I did, it wasn't too bad tbh. I didn't need to take the carrier off the hub only the piston part of the brake as the disc can fit in and out without removing it which is good as access for the bolts is a pig.

Make sure you have the ability to turn of the electric parking brake. I have an OBD11 so wasn't an issue for me.

Main difference with ours is the carrier bolts are recessed triple square unlike those shown in the video.

Luckily they don't need to be removed to get the disc off. As I said, access is tight and the bolts didn't want to move for me anyway. Luckily I just had a go at moving the disc and it came out.
