Hi all,

Searched high and low to find a knocking noise I have going over bumps. Tightened up the boot bumps and latch. Checked shocks and springs, exhaust, removed everything out of the boot but still it persists when ever I go over a bump/pothole. I jacked the car up thinking maybe the wheel bearings and all I found with them is it feels like very slight rotational play (nothing at 6 & 12 or 3 & 9 movement and no noises when spinning the wheel). It's got this slight rotational play on both sides and I wonder if this is normal and the possible knocking noise????

Cheers

Vijay

Sounds more like a failed bush or ball joint or more likely a drop link. Just did my front drop links on my MK2. They looked and felt ok but only when they were removed you could notice a fair bit of play. Doesnt take much play to get a clunk expecially with the condition of roads.

Does the car have the false floor? (folding chipboard panels covering the spare wheel well)

Sorry meant the links to the anti roll bar at rear.

it does but it still makes the noise when there's stuff on that false floor and the second/boot floor

I'll look again cos I didn't see the anti roll bar. Stupid question but is there still one on the 1u5 estate?

That was just a thought, and remember I have no access to your car.

There is a RARB, but it's built into the rear torsion beam, so not visible.

Rear subframe/torsion beam mounting bushes are more plausible.

No, I mean I'm about 420 miles from your car!

clunks and thunks tend to be bushes. as alisdair said , they might look okay, until they come out.

what am I looking at, 2 bushes a side? How bad of a job is it?

Just realised its a MK1. On the MK2 there are rear suspension arms with upper and lower bushes. They also have concentric bolts to adjust the wheel angle at top. Not sure if the MK1 is similar. If they do go you normally notice uneven tyre wear at rear and can cause clunks etc.

from what I can find, there is only a bush for the axle beam and another on the ARB

With regards to the ARB bushes, where are these located as I could not see them at all.

As I said back on June 11th...

Ah sorry, my bad. Are the anti roll bar bushes something that can easily be changed?

I'm not sure. I know how a torsion beam works but they're so reliable I've never had to work on one.

I'll start with the main bushes then and hope it's nothing to do with the ARB ones lol Just would have been good to do the lot while I'm under there

Top mounts on the rear shockers

Would I be able to feel movement in them from the arch by trying to move tt by hand?

Bought the lower bushes to do on Wednesday
