Usb c port displaced

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has ever had the following happened to them. I was using the usb c port that is behind the rear view mirror only having used it probably 4 or 5 times since I've purchased the car which was since late 2023 and the port has been pushed in. I haven't forced or jammed the chord. Now i can't use it as the usb c is about 3 to 5 mm pushed in. Of course there are the 2 ports in the centee consol i can still use. Just, curioys if this is something others have experienced . I called my local skoda service centre and they said it will cost $360aud for them to have a look at it or I can just leave it for them to look at the next major service in November for free. Not sure if they will charge me to rectify the problem though.

The same happened to mine, I was temporarily plugging my dash cam into it untill I got the fixed wiring in place. As soon as I pushed the cable in, the socket did what yours had. I managed to lower the plastic cover and push it back into place. I haven't tried since, so don't know if it is a permanent fix.

Is it hard to lower the plastic cover, I don't want to ruin anything. What tools do I need. I have the moon roof sunroof I wonder if they hadn't put it back properly if they actually removed that part.

I just partially lowered the plastic surrounding the mirror mount enough to get my fingers inside and push it back into place. As such It was fairly straight forward and only took a couple of minutes.

It's a known problem, the dealer is just playing you ($360 to look at it?? ha!), I'd be changing dealer at service time!

I had the same problem the first time I plugged in my dashcam cable. As @vfr did, I lowered the plastic cover slightly to push the socket back in place. Just squeeze the casing each side, you'll need to jiggle it slightly but it will come away sufficiently without breaking any clips. The socket ideally needs a spot of super glue to hold in place, I didn't bother doing that so I just make sure to never remove to cable.

You can take the mirror housing off without too much difficulty, but you're best watching some videos first. It took me ten seconds to get my 3.5 housing off and about ten hours to figure out how it went back on!

FYI dealers here normally charge a flat inspection fee - something like £100-120gpb. £170 is quite expensive - I would be inclined to agree that they're taking liberties somewhat.

Ok thanks

I will see how I go with it, will give it a go when I get the time.

Yeah maybe but that's what I was told by the receptionist so I decided to just leave it for the next service in November. Thanks for the guidance on how to go about it. Yeah, nah I don't know if I want to get super glue anywhere near in there, knowing that stuff and myself I'll probably get it everywhere lol so I'll leave it out like you. I'll try to give it a go though to reposition it back.

Ok noted thanks for the tips. I'll watch the videos, I gather they are on YouTube. That's a long time for something that only took seconds to take off I certainly don't want that.

Yeah it is a bit expensive just to have a look especially if it's not that difficultto remove. I will have to question it, why next time.

Well, I obviously exaggerate, but it took me longer than I’d like to admit. I just couldn’t work out how to clip two pieces together - quite simple once I realised.

Superglue will work a treat, but I wouldn’t risk it either. If it comes off with the housing, maybe a dab of hot glue? Should hold it in place and be removable.

This kind of thing might be easier to get in behind the plastic. The socket itself is square and should be straightforward to grip. And you can monitor progress by observing the socket hole. Snipe nose pliers - other brands are available.

Thanks again no problem. Hey it may even take me longer so all good. I haven't found the time too busy at this point.

Thanks for the further hot glue tip

Interesting I think I may have that tool somewhere in my garage. I'll have to find it otherwise I'll just go to the local hardware store. Thanks for the recommendation.

Same thing happened to the USB-C socket on our 24-plate Combi/estate, on the day of delivery :-{

Given the force needed to insert a new USB-C plug into a little-used socket, would expect the retaining clips to be stronger. So it looks like a somewhat poor design/construction.

Can't find any videos showing the removal of the Mk4 mirror housing - anyone got something suitable to share before we break anything else?
