Speed Warning

Featured Replies

AFAIK it's mandatory for new EU cars to be fitted with an audible/visual speed warning. I know it can be disabled or set to display-only when starting the car, but can the desired setting me made permanent? My reason is that there's a temporary 8am-4pm 20MPH limit near a local school where the out-of-hours (and school holidays) limit is 30MPH. I'm getting quite fed up of it pinging me for doing 25MPH (under the current 30MPH limit) at say, 6am or 6pm. In my opinion, setting it when you start the car or making it permanent shouldn't make a blind bit of difference under EU law (I'm in UK so non-EU).

Is it just me or are these "safety systems" in fact making cars more dangerous due to needless distractions? Don't even get me started on the overzealous AEB when there's no hazard present! I've now heard of 3 rear-enders due to unnecessary AEB.

Hi BabyDog, I too hate the constant ping at 1mph over the limit. Press steering wheel button to bring up ADAS menu. One click on the right scroll wheel, press the scroll wheel and press button again. I can do it without taking my eyes off the road now. My HUD informs me of speed limits and everyone is happy.

No, these systems must enable themselves every time you turn the ignition on (and just like EU manufacturers put the systems in UK cars because it’s cheaper and easier than not doing, they’re also not going to have different logic in the car software for UK versions). Some manufacturers (e.g. Renault, Mini) have a button that sets all the driver aids to your stored preferences, but you still have to press it every time you start the car. Not aware that VAG have implemented such a magic button in any of their marques…

Also, to address your problem about variable limits at different time of the day - the car will simply go off what it has been told… either the limit from the SatNav data, or the traffic sign if it sees one (which takes preference over the SatNav data). If the sign is a big 20 with a time plate below it, the system isn’t going to care or even understand the time bit - it’ll just see the 20 and use that.

OK, thanks for your explanation.
