Tailgate struts replacement?

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

In my 2019 Skoda Scala, the trunk door stops at "mid air" like in the pictures attached. The opening is manual.

Basically, when I open it, I've to help it significantly with the hands. If I stop at mid-opening, it It stays there, without moving up or down. Only when it's almost full open it moves by itself toward the maximum extension. When I close it, the resistance is minimal, and after the midpoint, if I remove the hands it bangs quite loudly.

it had this behavior since day zero, no "degradation". Thus, I was wondering if we're talking about a "bug" or a "feature".... D

Anyone else among the Scala owner have the same behavior? I would like to verify it before proceed with a substitution of the tailgate struts.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

PS: not sure if I used the correct translation (the sorry for my bad English!), but the items I would like to substitute are these: https://www.autodoc.parts/car-parts/tailgate-struts-10926/skoda/scala

I don't think this is odd, the last thing you want is the tailgate shooting up on it's own. The struts are intended to assist with the opening. Power tailgates use a motor.

The time to replace the struts is when the fail to support the open tailgate.

Just bought a 5 year old with only 15k and mine is exactly the same. Needs to be lifted to pass the halfway mark. Also drops fast and slams shut. All the signs of worn gas struts which I will be replacing. I noticed you also have the 'enhanced ' tailgate with larger spoiler and extended glass which must add some weight I suspect. Just to confirm I tried some tailgates on brand new Scalas which raised themselves after unlatching.

Try some silicon spray, or cheap furniture polish, on the rod, open and close the boot a few times, spray again until it won't take any more. Probably won't work, but it's cheap and easy for the odd time it does.
