The Joys of Black Magic

Featured Replies

Have had my VRS three weeks and am now thinking why did I not go for red - while I think black looks great when it is clean, it is a b#gger to keep it this way. I have just had it clayed on the flat panels and even though it is factory fresh it is amazing the amount of contaminant that came out so have had it sealed and will keep appllying the carranuba to get it wet looking, but now with the roads starting to melt the tar is just jumping on to it.

Apart from that great car, even though it is an estate still flows well through the twisties and it is fun baiting all those 320d drivers who think they have arrived, and look down their noses at a Skoda as they flash their lights to get me to pull over and then its smell the 98 fumes time as I pull away.

.

Red isn't much better, even after a good waxing the water marks are atrocious after a couple of rain sprinkles. Hoping the yellow will be the solution when the Furby arrives :)

Black Magic = Nightmare:mad:

Mine is showing swirl marks and ive got two scrathes (one above each rear wing) and they stand out like a sore thumb.

As you say its a great colour when clean but a pig to look after, I should have went for silver again.

From your avatar, your car looks just like mine :) I went with black because that's what was in stock, that's what I got the deal on, and when it's clean it looks the biz. Previous car was silver. Easiest for living with by far.

Silver is great. Though gunmetal grey cars are even easier to keep looking clean(ish)

I've had white cars in the past and even these are easier to keep looking reasonable than a black one

Wish I had a Black vRS estate, think I'd keep it clean, managed to keep my MK1 vRS estate in Black clean but then I find cleaning the car relaxing :o

Graphite Grey just don't shine like Black :(

Black is still the best. Just take more time cleaning it and do it more often. If you dont have time, dont get black!! Simple really

While I knew black would be a pig to keep looking good, it is amazing the amount of dirt that came out of the bonnet and roof when I gave it a light claying (and the paint was only a few weeks old) and when a bird cr#pped on it ,within a few hours it was starting to mark the paint, as a result I have now sealed it and will keep applying wax to keep the swirls away.

Should have gone for the (no-longer-available) Sahara Beige - same colour as the dirt!

once you go black you dont go back!!!!:)

mines red though having said that

Hosepipe ban and no shade makes the cleaning part a bit of a bind at the mo. Twice washed with multi buckets, swirling already starting to be visible...

No offence John that while Sahara Biege is a nice colour, it is a bit pipe and driving gloves for me.

You and me both, mate!

Red, silver I don't care, black is a right pain in the butt! Could have gone with red and saved 300 quid too!

By the way, what does sealing it mean? I might clay mine and seal it thereafter if I can get some advice on which products to go out and find to do the job.

Is there a local PC expert near me I wonder?

Looking good, the black is nice but as you say hard to keep.

I had mine Permagarded from new still looks great but you do need to dry off whilst still wet to stop water marks, or use soft water to rinse.

I bought a PC for just that very reason which is brill for getting rid of those wretched swirls, it got rid of the lighter swirls easily . Still learning on how to use it properly at the moment so I havn't tried the deeper scratches yet but it won't be long now.

If you want some assistance I could perhaps lend a hand with the use of the PC, send me a PM if your'e interested.

As for the 'Black' issue, stick with it as I think it's by far the best colour (when clean) and as for the red, it's a bit bright for my taste.

The main problem at present is flies sticking to front end' date=' does any one know of any good way apart from a non-scratch scouring pad to get them off.

Have a look at the Auto Express product tests on their web site:thumbup:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/producttests/archive/ or look at Practical Classics product tests:thumbup: . I have just tried the Turtle Wax Platinum Bug Tree Sap & Tar remover. I seems gentle enough, especially if you have a good layer of wax on the car to start with! If they have been baked on for a few days, it sometimes takes 2 goes or you can leave it on longer! I also fancy trying the Mguires product, but can't find it in the shops yet:D !

Don't Halfords stock it?

All our local ones stock Mguires products, but for some reason they don't stock the Bug remover yet:thumbdwn: Our local Superstore reckoned it wasn't on their "stock list", so they might not be stocking it at all!

You can buy direct from the Mguires website, so might try that, if all else fails!:D
