I'm planning to factory-order the new Mk4.5 Octavia SE L 1.5TSI Petrol Manual. I see Front Assist now comes as standard. My questions are:

1. Does Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) work on Manual facelifted Octavias? If yes, does it actually stop the car completely and stall the engine?

2. Have you personally experienced it?

3. I saw one in the dealership showroom and can't see an option on infotainment screen to adjust the sensitivity of front assist. How close to a collision before AEB kicks in and stops the car autonomously?

Do you have experience with a pre-facelift one? If not, I guess the systems are not that different between the versions.

Info for pre-facelift MK4.

1. Yes, AEB works on manuals. It does stop the car completely except if you intervene - input throttle, or the danger disappears. Stalling the engine is the last thing to worry about in those circumstances I think.

2. I have had only one erroneous activation of the AEB in 2 years owning and I didn't let the car stop fully. Otherwise, the system is pretty forgiving and doesn't alert you too often.

3. I've had experience with Suzuki, Hyundai and VW & Skoda AEB cars. The VW & Skoda are the least panicky and alert you later than the others.

Yes, AEB does work with a manual 'box and as @386ka mentions, stalling is the last thing to worry about in such circumstances. Mine has activated a few times in over 4 years and 65k miles and was pleasantly surprised at its effectiveness though I have never had to let it bring the car to a stop as the danger disappeared. Only in the first few months did I get erroneous AEB activation, was fixed in one of the many s/w updates.

As for sensitivity, it is speed aware; by that I mean the faster I am travelling to greater the distance before it kicks in - as I found out at 70mph on the A34. On pre-FL cars there is a setting to adjust the sensitivity - or at least there was when I first got my car. Maybe it is deeply buried in the menus now, but equally I can see the removing that option. Two reasons - reduces the likelihood of us numpty drivers interfering with the safety systems 🙄, or, more likely, reduce development/maintenance costs for the s/w systems.

It can also be disabled if you object to software engineers driving your car by proxy.

I have only had my AEB activate at 2nd stage a couple of times (the quick, sharp stab of ABS) when the system thought I wasn't reacting quickly enough.

Never had the system go into 3rd stage (full brake to halt)

I bought my Octavia 4.5 with manual gearbox in March 2025 with 22 miles on delivery - i.e. brand new with delivery mileage.

Since then I have had 5 activations of Assist Brake (AEB) where it slowed instantly to a complete halt and stalled the engine. On all of these occasions, I was in complete control of the car and there was no danger to me or anyone else, but the car knew better. On three of these occasions, the car came to a halt and left me blocking the road and in danger from other traffic; I was left to restart the car and hope that I would get away from danger; on one of these occasions, there wasn't another vehicle for hundreds of yards in front or behind but Assist Brake objected to me making a right turn. On the other two occasions, the activation was nonsensical, e.g. I arrived at a T junction to turn left and was looking R-L-R, when a white van drove along the main road from left to right and the Assist Brake saw this and activated. I'm becoming used to the activations now, can recognise what is happening, and can restart the car and move off fairly quickly. Obviously, Assist Brake and subsidiary functions can be turned off but this has to be done every time the ignition is turned on. I like the car but I am thinking that Assist Brake and a manual gearbox don't go together.

Questions:

1) Does anyone else with an Octavia 4.5 with manual gearbox have any experience of erroneous activations?

2) Can the sensitivity be turned down by using the in-car controls?

3) Can the sensitivity be turned down by the dealership?

4) With an automatic gearbox (DSG), would the car actually stall the engine or just stop with the engine running? If so, in which gear?

5) Do other VAG cars with manual gearboxes (e.g. the current Golf) have the same Assist Brake technology?
