Which gearbox? 1.5 TSI Combi, SE-L

Featured Replies

Loving my Octy Combi 1.5TSI. Thinking forward, I'd like to get the DSG gearbox serviced and wonder if the members of the forum could give some pointers, please.

How do I find which gearbox is fitted to the car?

Is it oil only or oil and filter?

What service interval to have the DSG 'box serviced?

Thanks for any help.

What year is it?

If FWD and 150 ps / 250 Nm max it is a DQ200 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG with 2 oils and no service schedule or regime. & no filter to change.

Thanks so much, appreciated.

That makes no difference. It is not a 2.0 TSI or TDI or AWD or a PHEV, so not a DQ250, DQ381 or a DQ400-e.

It is a Twin Dry Clutch DSG.

Cheers - I'm one for having things serviced and looked after.

I've a good local mechanic that doesn't take the mickey and he thought it was a sealed unit. I wanted to ask the members here their thoughts as I know this is the place to get advice.

It is not sealed. You open the drain plugs and the Box and MCU can be serviced, oils changed.

It is just that the Manufacturer has no Service Guidelines, Advice, Schedule or specifications for servicing the DQ200 DSG.

(People do service them.)

Thanks - what is the MCU? New to modern terms - apologies.

It may well be worth an oil change. It's got 78K Miles on it, call me paranoid...

It's sealed for life - but it isn't.

As above, you can change the oil in the box itself, as well as the Mechatronic Unit (MCU).

I'd probably take a look around 100k. The reccommended interval for the other DSG boxes (250, 500, etc) is 40k, aside from the 381 which is 80k. I still had mine done at 40k though. By all means get it done sooner, but as the clutches are dry (as in, not submersed in oil like on a 'wet' box), the only stuff in the oil is going to be material from the gears themselves (and other bits) rather than friction material. This will take a lot longer to accumulate.

You should be fine until 100k, unless it's had a hard life around London, etc.

Cheers @OccyVRS I'd rather be pre-emptive and change the oil in both - top tips.

Preventative mainteinance is a good idea, however I would probably give it a little bit longer. If you want to do it earlier, maybe do it at 90k. Everything VW says should be taken with a pinch of salt - 80,000 miles for an oil change on a DQ381 is madness. Generally, given my car gets driven quite hard, I try to do stuff at around half the reccommended interval.

There's no way of really checking the condition of anything, without changing the oils. so you sort of have to just eyeball it. Only you can judge if it's had a hard life, isn't as quick as it used to be, etc.

MCU = motor control unit, also known as a mechatronics unit in Skoda / VW forums. The MCU and the gearbox use two different oils.

It is only the DQ200 with separate oil in the Mechatronic Control Unit and in the box.

Why no Oil filter as in nearly all the other DSG,s were the clutches are in the oil & that oil is in the MCU as well.

(Why with DQ381,s that the Manufacturer / Workshop / dealer employees should say Oil filter not needing changed at 80,000 miles and first at 160,000 or the 2nd Oil service.
