Karoq 4x4 outer edge tire wear

Featured Replies

So, I’m driving a 2018 Škoda Karoq Style 110kW TDI 4x4 with 19 inch Crater Alloys and 225/45R19 Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 Tires.

Love the car …but I’m noticing excessive outer edge tire wear.

I’ve had a wheel alignment and all seems ok.

I’m running the tire pressures on a load setting at 2.8Bar (40PSI) at the front and 2.7Bar (39PSI) at the rear because we regularly carry the whole family+bikes+etc… we also do a bit of caravan towing a few times a year.

I’ve rotated them tires to maximise their life but I’ll need to replace all 4 tires soon and wanted to get a tire recommendations for rural/motorway driving conditions that’ll last longer and/or wear evenly?

…also maybe some guidance on whether it’s common for this type of wear on Karoq 4x4?

Many thanks,

cdub

How many miles have the tyres done? The outside edges of the front tyres of my 4x4 2.0 TSI were wearing after 10k miles so switched fronts to back reckon I’ll get 20k front the set. I live in Milton Keynes famous for its roundabouts not good for tyre wear especially if one utilises the grip and handling

The Karoq had travelled 60,000 miles when we purchased it. It’s now travelled 65,000 miles and I’ve only owned it for a year. I couldn’t be sure how much life was in the tires when we got it and maybe it was starting to show early signs of outer edge wear but I didn’t think much of it at the time. It gets used daily running errands etc so maybe this is typical for the life of the tires for the Karoq 4x4. I had a Rapid Spaceback before this and whilst that is a very different car, I put 30,000 miles on that and the tires still had heaps of tread when I’d sold it 😅

I think the lower (40 & 45) profile tyres with smaller sidewalls don’t flex as much as 50 and 60 profiles so they wear more when cornering. My previous VW did 50,000 miles on its first set of tyres, next set did 35,000. But I don’t expect to get that sort of mileage from the Karoq.

What tires are you running on your Karoq 4x4

Adding in model specific information (4x4)

Still on the original set of Bridgestone Duellers, which are summer tyres. Car has done 12,000 miles on these tyres, swapped fronts to back at10,000 miles at the end of August, as the outside shoulders were wearing. Wanted to even out the wear so I could replace the whole set and get the lower prices.

Top tyre is left front, lower tyre is left rear. Apart front the obvious shoulder wear on the front, there is not much difference in overall wear. LF 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 5.5. LR 5.0, 5.5, 5.5, 6.0. Measuring outside to inside. Outside is on the left of the photo. Hopefully these will now be OK until around 20,000 when I'll replace them.

Replacement will probably be one of Pirelli SF3, Michelin CC3 SUV, Continental All Season (just fitted these to our Fabia) or Bridgestone Turbanza 6 All Season. If one of them has a rim protector moulding that could be the deciding factor over price or grip, as the 19 inch alloys and 45 profile tyres don't give any protection. I had 2 sets of Cross Climates after the original Michelin Primacys on the previous VW Touran, but the Continentals and Bridgestones come out better in the Tyre Tests.

This is a really informative site - you can compare each tyre against the other and see how it performs.

It reassured me a bit reading this post and thamestrader's reply, knowing others are having the same experience.

I've had my 2.0TSI 4x4 for just over a year. 5k miles when I got it, over 17k now, but fronts in particular are badly worn on the outside edge. I've swapped fronts to backs this afternoon to try and eek out a few more miles but expect to be changing them out at 20k if not sooner.

I'm currently looking at Goodyear Vector 4Seasons as the most likely replacement, mainly because of a combination of good reviews and a decent price at Costco - although Costco only do Gen 2s unfortunately - the Gen 3 is supposed to be quite a step up in most areas. I've had All Season tyres on my last few cars and feel comfortable with the compromises to ensure decent cold weather, snow/ice performance - for the few days a year that they really come into their own in the UK!

@JXR I recommend trying the tyre comparison site I mentioned on the earlier post. With the 19” alloys on the 4x4 Sportline I’m keen to find an All Season tyre with some form of rim protector which the current Bridgestone Duellers have.

As your car is the 4x4 I assume you are looking for 245/40 R19 98Y XL.

These may be available in that size:

Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport –

Available “with rim protection ridge (FSL)”.

Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6 -

Available “with rim protection (MFS)” (also shown as “XL MFS …” on some listings).

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 –

Available “with rim protection (MFS)”.

Continental AllSeasonContact 2 –

Commonly listed with “FR” (yet another rim-protection / flange marking).

Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 –

Available “with rim protection (MFS)” in 245/40 R19.

But for all I know, any of these may also be available in versions that lack the rim protector. Don't take my word for any of this; check with the retailer.

Thanks Thamestrader & mumpsim. Rim protection is definitely a worthwhile feature - I reckon I've got a couple of months to finish researching (btw my tyres are 225/45/R19)

Check out Asda prices. I was given a choice of local fitters and the Asda price was less than the fitters could even buy them at.
