Changing 2016 VRS estate side lights to LED bulbs - OBDeleven nightmare! Help!

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS estate (after owning a 2015 VRS hatchback for many years) and decided that I'd like to replace the front halogen sidelights (the W5W bulbs next to main Bi-Xenon bulbs) with LEDs.

I bought 'street legal' Osram Night breaker LEDs (model 2825DWNB-2HB) and also own an OBDeleven 3. Before I swapped the side lights I swapped the license plate lights (with the same Osram LED bulbs) and used the OBD11 'one-click' 'LED License Plate Lamps' app to code out the dash alert for the swapped license plate bulbs.

I then swapped the side lights (physically easy), got a dash/infotainment warning for both left and right sidelights and (mistakenly) thought I could use the OBD11 'Bulb Diagnostic: Front Turn Signals app' to code the side lights from 'Bulb' to 'LED'. I used the app, realised it meant was meant for indicators(!), so reverted the 'LED' value back to 'Bulb' again.

At this point I then went down a CoPilot/ChatGPT rabbit hole of adaption changes that I can't get out of!

I've put the original halogen side light bulbs back in but the last OBD11 scan showed the following error codes ☹️

I took a backup of the central electronics module after I'd reverted the 'Bulb Diagnostic: Front Turn Signals app' (I know I should have taken one before) and fed it into AI, along with 3 other backups I took along the way, when each AI suggestion didn't work!

AI essentially said that I had a conflict between side lights and DRLs when it came to various light functions and that I should separate them (e.g. side lights and DRLs both configured for parking lights, so I should remove Standlicht/Parklicht functions from DRLs and Tagfahrlicht from side light channels). I should point out that before I made any changes I wasn't getting any light related errors - on the dash or via OBD11, and the side lights and the DRL led strip would come on at the same time (which AI suggested wasn't factory standard and possible the result of prior coding work).

Right now, the DRLs don't appear to come on at all (albeit it's too dark to double check) but they remain 'ticked' in the infotainment light settings and the side lights and the rest of the front bulbs work as expected - I just have a screen full of errors, so must have don't something fundamentally wrong!

I've attached a summary of all the AI 'guidance' plus the full OBD11 central electronics module backups where the differences between them are highlighted.

I appreciate this is a mess of my own making, and if you've read this far down then I thank you, but if anyone has any words of wisdom here they'd be gratefully received! I just want to get back to where I started at this point 😫

TIA

Matthew

P.S. I did a search on the forum at the start to see if I could find the correct channels for the side lights and the values suggested in the post I found (Leuchte16 & 17) AI claimed was incorrect (as below):

What your backup shows (key points)

  • Front side lights (W5W) are NOT Leuchte16/17 on your car.
On your Mk3 Octavia VRS, the
    front side lights live in:

    • Leuchte2SL VLB10 – Lasttyp 2 = 8 (allgemeine Glühlampe 12W)

    • Leuchte3SL VRB21 – Lasttyp 3 = 8 (allgemeine Glühlampe 12W).txt) [history (2) | Txt]

  • You changed Leuchte16/17 to LED, but those are additional side‑light/position lamp channels used on other trims/headlamp variants; they aren’t the ones your car uses for the front W5W bulbs.

    • Leuchte16/17 currently: Lasttyp 16/17 = 6 – LED Lichtmodul (these aren’t your active front W5W circuits).txt) [history (2) | Txt]

  • Your BCM also has DRL modules on Leuchte4 / Leuchte5 (LED Tagfahrlichtmodul Versorgung), which is correct for VRS with DRL strips.

    • Leuchte4TFL LB4 / Leuchte5TFL RB32 = Lasttyp 1 (LED DRL).txt)

Bad choice

AI is not intelligent, it just matches word patterns.

Id stick to human or good old internet searches

Thank you so much and yes, I have a Pro OBD11 account. I've only made manual changes to the Central Electrics (09) adaptation channels (and 'only' to Leuchte2, 3, 4, 5, 16 & 17) but if you can share a factory/OEM map, that I can compare against, that would be brilliant.

I'm new to the forum so not sure the best way to share/receive a file (do you need my email address?)?

Whilst I'm hopeful that @Cairus can help dig me out of my hole, I have continued to research where I think I went went wrong and as @BlueWagon said above, being too trusting of AI 'advice' is pretty much the reason, as I've since found contradictory advice across a few different sources (both AI and good old fashioned internet searches).

Taking this with a big pinch of Salt, Google's Gemini AI claims the following, after initially refusing to believe that my car has a W5W halogen side light bulb in the headlight unit 😆....

I apologize for the confusion. You are absolutely right—there are variations of the Bi-Xenon headlight clusters (specifically the non-AFS or specific regional "Elegance/vRS" transition units) that retain a physical W5W bulb for the "Position Light" or "City Light" function, located in the inner reflector bowl next to the main Xenon lens.

In the standard coding logic for the Mk3 (5E) BCM, when a separate physical W5W bulb exists alongside the LED DRL strip, it is almost exclusively mapped to Leuchte 16 (Left) and Leuchte 17 (Right).

However, it's big claim is that for VRS models with Bi-Xenon headlights, Leuchte 4 & 5 are not used ...

1. Leuchte Channel Map (Who is Who)

Before changing settings, you must know which channel controls which bulb.

  • Leuchte0 BLK VL B36: Front Left Indicator

  • Leuchte1 BLK VRB20: Front Right Indicator

  • Leuchte2 SL VLB10: Front Left DRL / Parking Light (The LED Strip)

  • Leuchte3 SL VRB21: Front Right DRL / Parking Light (The LED Strip)

  • Leuchte4 TFL LB4: Front Left DRL (Often unused on vRS as DRL is in Leuchte2)

  • Leuchte5 TFL RB32: Front Right DRL (Often unused on vRS as DRL is in Leuchte3)

The relationship between the LED Strip (Leuchte2/3) and the Physical W5W Bulb (Leuchte16/17) on a Bi-Xenon Octavia is specific. In the factory configuration for this "hybrid" headlight, they work together as follows:

  1. Daytime (DRL Mode):

    • LED Strip (Leuchte2/3): ON at 100% brightness.

    • W5W Bulb (Leuchte16/17): OFF.

    • Leuchte4/5: OFF / Inactive.

  2. Night/Parking (Sidelight Mode):

    • LED Strip (Leuchte2/3): DIMS to approx 35% (acts as a position light).

    • W5W Bulb (Leuchte16/17): ON at 100% (acts as a secondary position light).

    • Leuchte4/5: OFF / Inactive.

To fix your "messed up" settings, you need to clear Leuchte 4 and 5 (make them inactive) and correctly configure 2/3 and 16/17 so they don't conflict.

Here are the specific settings to restore this harmony.

Step 1: Clear the Ghost Channels (Leuchte 4 & 5)

On a Bi-Xenon vRS, these channels are typically used for the separate DRL bulbs found on Halogen models. If you have settings active here, they may be causing conflicts or bulb warnings for bulbs that don't exist (or trying to power the wrong pins).

Channel: (1)-Leuchte4TFL LB4 (Left) & (1)-Leuchte5 TFL RB32 (Right)

  • Lasttyp: not active (If you can't set "not active", set it to 0 - not active or 1 - LED TFL generally works if 'not active' isn't an option, but try to clear it).

  • Lichtfunktion A: not active (This is the most important one to clear)

  • Dimmwert AB: 0

  • Lichtfunktion B through H: All not active

  • Dimmwert CD/EF/GH: 0

(Once these are cleared, your car stops looking for a halogen DRL bulb).

Step 2: Configure the LED Strip (Leuchte 2 & 3)

This controls the "Lash" light. It needs to handle DRL (bright) and Parking (dim).

Left Channel: (1)-Leuchte2SL VLB10 Right Channel: (1)-Leuchte3SL VRB21

  • Lasttyp: 4 - LED Tagfahrlichtmodul Signal

  • Lampendefektbit: (Left: 4A, Right: 4C) Leave as is

  • Fehlerort: (Left: 48, Right: 49) Leave as is

LIGHT FUNCTIONS:

  • Lichtfunktion A: Tagfahrlicht (Daytime Running Light)

  • Dimmwert AB: 100 (or 127) -> This makes it bright during the day.

  • Lichtfunktion B: Standlicht allgemein (Parking Light)

  • Lichtfunktion C: Blinken links/rechts Hellphase (Indication Dimming - Optional but standard)

    • (Set Left Channel to Blinken links, Right Channel to Blinken rechts)

  • Dimmwert CD: 35 (This is the dimming level. Used for Parking Light and indicating).

  • Dimming Direction CD: minimize

(Result: The strip is Bright for DRL. When you switch to Sidelights/Headlights, "Function B" takes over or activates the "minimize" dimming, dropping it to 35%.)

Step 3: Configure the W5W Bulb (Leuchte 16 & 17)

This is the physical bulb you changed to LED. It should only come on with Parking lights/Headlights.

Left Channel: (1)-Leuchte16BLK SL VL B35 Right Channel: (1)-Leuchte17BLK SL VR B20

  • Lasttyp: 43 - Allgemein LED (Since you swapped to LED).

    • If this throws an error, try 40 - Allgemein LED or 6 - LED Lichtmodul.

  • Lampendefektbit: (Left: 26, Right: 27)

  • Fehlerort: (Left: 24, Right: 25)

LIGHT FUNCTIONS:

  • Lichtfunktion A: Standlicht allgemein (Parking Light)

  • Dimmwert AB: 100 -> This turns the W5W on when switch is in Parking or Auto-Night.

  • Lichtfunktion B: nicht aktiv

  • Lichtfunktion C: nicht aktiv

Summary of the Relationship

  • Switch Position "0" (Daytime):

    • Car triggers Tagfahrlicht.

    • Leuchte 2/3 (Function A) sees this and turns on 100%.

    • Leuchte 16/17 does not have Tagfahrlicht set, so it stays OFF.

  • Switch Position "Side Light" or "Headlight":

    • Car triggers Standlicht allgemein.

    • Leuchte 2/3 (Function B or Dimming logic) sees this and Dims to 35%.

    • Leuchte 16/17 (Function A) sees this and turns on 100%.

Whilst this all sounds believable, and is contrary to the original CoPilot recommendation that DRL & sidelight functions should be completely separated, I obviously don't know what's right and what's wrong here?!

In the first backup I took (too late!) it looks like Leuchte 2/3 and 4/5 have very similar settings, so whether I should consider Leuchte 4/5 as 'ghost channels' (and deactivate them) is my main point of confusion without an OEM/factory point of comparison.

If you configure Leuchte 4 and Leuchte 5 identically to Leuchte 2 and Leuchte 3 on your Bi-Xenon vRS, you will trigger dashboard error warnings.

Here is exactly what will happen and why:

1. The Dashboard Error

You will see a warning message on your instrument cluster (MaxiDot) saying:

"Check Left Daytime Running Light" "Check Right Daytime Running Light"

A yellow triangle warning light will likely stay illuminated on the dash.

2. The Physical Reason (The "Missing Wire" Problem)

This is the most common misunderstanding with VCDS/OBDeleven coding.

  • Leuchte Channels are not just software logic slots; they correspond to physical metal pins on the BCM (Body Control Module).

  • Leuchte 2 & 3 send electricity to the pins connected to your LED Strips.

  • Leuchte 4 & 5 send electricity to Pins B4 and B32 on the BCM plug.

On a factory Bi-Xenon vRS, there are no wires connected to Pins B4 and B32. These pins are used for the halogen DRL bulbs on lower-spec models.

3. The Diagnostic Failure

When you copy the settings from Leuchte 2/3 to 4/5, you turn on Load Monitoring for channels 4 and 5.

  1. The car attempts to send power to Leuchte 4 & 5.

  2. The electricity hits a dead end (no wire/bulb).

  3. The BCM detects infinite resistance (Open Circuit).

  4. The car thinks the bulb has blown and triggers the error message.

Summary

Doing this will not make your lights brighter or change their behavior; it will simply tell the car to monitor and power two bulbs that do not exist, resulting in permanent bulb-out errors.

Recommendation: Ensure Leuchte 4 and Leuchte 5 are set to not active (or Lasttyp = 0) to keep your dashboard error-free. The only channels controlling your DRL/Sidelights should be 2/3 (LED Strip) and 16/17 (W5W Bulb).

For completeness, here are the steps that Google suggests is necessary to revery to factory/desired behaviour...

Here is the consolidated, unambiguous configuration for your 2016 Octavia vRS Estate.

This list incorporates the Coming Home / Leaving Home (CH/LH) settings explicitly, ensuring your LED "Lash" strips dims correctly during the function, and your new W5W LEDs turn on to match them.

Please ensure you apply these exact values to clear your errors and restore correct functionality.

1. Leuchte 2 & 3: The LED Strips ("The Lash")

2. Leuchte 4 & 5: The "Ghost" Channels

  • Goal: Disable completely to stop dashboard errors.

  • Critical: Ensure all Lichtfunktions (A through H) are "not active" or "nicht aktiv".

Left Side: (1)-Leuchte4TFL LB4

  • Lasttyp 4: not active

  • Lichtfunktion A 4: not active

  • Dimmwert AB 4: 0

@Cairus thank you so much 🙌it turns out the key problem was I'd set the wrong Lasttyp on Leuchte2 & Leuchte3 and when I set it back to 4 - LED Tagfahrlichtmodul Signal most of my problems went away (I'd also fiddled with a couple of Dimmwert values but set those back to factory).

All the dash/infotainment errors have now gone and the front side lights are now working with LEDs bulbs.

In ODB11 I'm still getting a couple of strange errors for the front indicators (which I didn't physically touch - only used, and then reverted, the 'Bulb Diagnostic: Front Turn Signals' one click app):

Faults:

B12D015 - Left turn signal light bulb Open circuit/short circuit to B+

static

B12D115 - Right turn signal light bulb Open circuit/short circuit to B+

static

Both indicators are still working and the errors come back straight away when clearing them in OBD11 (although there's no dash error) - any ideas?

In the interest of my failed "ask AI" experiment, here's what Google Gemini said when I gave it the admap file (and a good example of it not really knowing what it was talking about! 🫣) and the two remaining errors...

This admap_09_O3_VFL.pdf file is the missing key. It completely changes the diagnosis and proves that my previous assumption about Leuchte 4 & 5 being "ghost channels" was incorrect for your specific BCM variant (5Q0937086AK).

This document reveals that your car uses a Dual-Channel Control System for the LED DRLs.

  • Leuchte 2 & 3 control the Signal (The brightness instruction).

  • Leuchte 4 & 5 control the Versorgung (The Power Supply).

If you disable 4 & 5 (as I previously suggested), you cut the power to the LED module, causing the "Check DRL" error. If you set them incorrectly, you get the flickering or bulb warnings you experienced.

Here is the Revised Master Configuration based strictly on your factory map, adjusted only to support your new W5W LEDs in channels 16 & 17.

The "Dual-Channel" Logic Explained

  • Channels 4 & 5 (Supply): Must provide 100% power (127) whenever the light is supposed to be ON (whether dim or bright).

  • Channels 2 & 3 (Signal): Tell the light how bright to be (e.g., 100 for DRL, 35 for Parking).

Good news: I have analyzed your backup file history (10).txt and verified it against the OEM factory map admap_09_O3_VFL.pdf.

I can confirm that you have successfully reverted the adaptation channels for your front indicators (Leuchte 0 and Leuchte 1) to their correct factory specifications.

  • Leuchte 0 (Left): Set to 12 - Blinkleuchten with correct Dimmwert 100.

  • Leuchte 1 (Right): Set to 12 - Blinkleuchten with correct Dimmwert 100.

Since your coding is now perfectly correct for halogen bulbs, but the "Open Circuit" error persists in the scan, here is the explanation and the fix.

Why the error remains (The "Ghost" Fault)

You mentioned that the dashboard warning light has gone out and the infotainment system reports no errors. This is the most important indicator.

  • The Logic: If a turn signal bulb was genuinely "Open Circuit" (blown), the dashboard warning would generally be active, and the indicator would likely "hyper-flash" (tick very fast).

  • The Cause: The "Static" error codes B12D015 and B12D115 shown in your scan are likely latched "History" codes. The BCM (Body Control Module) detected the mismatch when you used the App, logged a "Static" fault, and hasn't self-cleared it from the digital memory yet, even though the physical condition (and the dashboard status) is resolved.

Recommended Fix

You do not need to change any more coding. Please follow these steps to clear the digital memory:

  1. Clear the Fault Codes:

    • Open OBDeleven.

    • Connect to the car with Ignition ON (Engine can be off).

    • Go to Control Units -> 09 Central Electrics.

    • Select Faults.

    • Tap the Trash Can icon (or "Clear") to wipe the codes.

    • Rescan. The errors should now disappear and display "No trouble codes found".

  2. Verify Physical Operation:

    • Turn on your hazard lights. Walk to the front of the car and confirm both front amber indicators are flashing at normal brightness and speed.

    • If they work, your car is fixed.

  3. The "BCM Reboot" (Only if errors return instantly):

    • In rare cases, the BCM's output channel protection can get "stuck" after incorrect coding.

    • If the codes return immediately after clearing, lock the car and leave it for 15 minutes (allowing the bus to sleep), or disconnect the negative battery terminal for 1 minute. This forces the BCM to reboot and re-check the resistance on those circuits.

Disconnect the battery. Hold the positive and negative terminals together. Wait 10 minutes and reconnect them. Start the vehicle, turn the steering wheel fully to the left, then to the right, then to the center. Drive around the block once. Then clear all fault codes in the BCM, but first change the diagnostic session to developer mode.

Thank you; I'll try when Storm Goretti passes!
