Upgrading MK3 Octavia audio

Featured Replies

Hello, brand new to this forum so apologies if people are sick of this topic but;

I'm looking to improve the audio in a 2014 Octavia SE liftback that I've recently purchased.

From what I can tell I have a Bolero MIB1 head unit with the standard speaker & amplifier setup.

Coming from a 2012 Volvo S60 (that turned not to be road worthy from the dealer 🤬) with a pair of good 6.5" subs in the rear doors, not having a sub at all (afaik) makes listening to music in the car just a bit sad.

I'm not looking to shake the rear mirror, I'd just like to enjoy my music again.

I've read a few posts here on this topic but I want to get input from people who have done this.

(I've been working in PA/VA for a year so I've started getting to grips with general audio & electronics but I've never done anything with music or car audio.)

I'm currently thinking of adding a pair of subs in the boot cubbies, I assume I'm going to need a new amplifier (either additional or replacing the stock one) so input on recommended subwoofers and amplifiers would be great, as well as their install.

I saw @1loud1 's post on upgrading his canton sound system so my current plan is to use the sub enclosures linked in his guide.

After looking into it further I am unsure whether I can actually do any of this with the Bolero head unit currently in the car.
I'd like to avoid spending a huge amount on this as I don't know if I'll end up owning the car for more than a couple of years, so that limits how much I'm willing to do.

I suppose my main questions are:
-Would adding a sub(s) require replacement of the head unit or can I just replace the stock amp with one with more outputs?

-If so, is it worth it? How much would that cost, can I do it myself etc.
-What amplifier & subs do people recommend for this?
-What are the best resources for guiding me through the install process?

Let me know if I've missed out any important info.

Thanks in advance!

Check out the Focal Audio IS VW 165 kit. I bought 2 and replaced all speakers in the doors, without upgrading the amplifier initially they sound great, super punchy bass but just lacking a bit in volume.

I've recently upgraded to a 4ch amp with built in DSP. The bass is extremely punchy and the volume gets LOUD without any breaking up (measured 118dB with REW). The sound-stage feels huge, it genuinely feels like you're at a concert. You can feel the bass deep in your chest, it's great. I don't have a subwoofer because I don't think its needed with my setup. The entire install is completely invisible too, everything looks OEM and no boot space sacrificed. I am not a fan of huge, window rattling bass. This upgrade genuinely provides a very pleasant listening experience, the whole frequency range is represented well, whilst still being capable of ribcage rattling bass.

The focal audio kit is great, the speakers come in the VAG style speaker housings, and just drop straight in. If you have the base model audio system the connectors are incompatible, but that's easily remedied by 15 minutes with a crimp tool.

As for connections, I use 2x VIBE speaker level converters to splice all 4 channels out to phono level, which then runs to the amplifier behind the boot lining.

I agree, the Focal INSIDE VW system is a good value solution. I would Retrofit mib2 then code the MIB2 to the virtual sound system and adjust the audio data sets. You will be much happier.

Alternatively, you could retrofit the Helix sound system. It includes a subwoofer with integrated DSP for the spare tire well. Alternatively, you could install the Focal Inside VW speakers, add some sound deadening, and you should be more than satisfied.

That's another thing I forgot to mention in my post. I've lined all the metal inside the doors with the Roadkill sound deadening sheet. Then lined anywhere where metal meets plastic edges with thin foam strip. Also packed some old t-shirts into the void behind the armrests etc. Makes a huge difference to the sound, also makes the car a bit quieter to drive which is a bonus.

Every time somebody asks this question, I always point them towards enabling Skoda Surround. On an MIB1 system, this is not shown up, but the audio quality is hugely improved.

Wrote an article about this a while back:

Sound deadening, sound deadening, sound deadening.

One area that SEAT/Skoda cut costs over VW and Audi.

I will have to look into this. I have MIB1 and also OBDeleven Pro, so hopefully will be able to do it.

Thanks for the response, this is looking like the route I'm going to go.
What amp did you go with?

Do you know of any good guides I can look at? I'm apprehensive about fitting new speakers without damaging something 😅
