225/40/16, too wide?

Featured Replies

Hey

(Yes, i have searched the forum, but with no result)

As my front tyres are worn, i need a new pair of tyres.

I currently have 205/45/16, and it looks like this:

As you can see, the rim is pretty wide, and i would like to get some rim protection, therefor a wider tyre.

My car isn`t lowered, and it`s a Std. Fabia.

But will a 225/40/16 tyre touch anywhere?

What if i decide to lower it 35/35?

Should be OK - 45% of 205mm is fairly equivalent to 40% of 225, so not really any profile issues. I say go for it. :) and then tell us what its like.

I think however the rim will be over tyred.

This has an effect of pinching the tyre which means it wears out quicker on the edges.

If your worried about the wheels being tucked in i'd either get some spacers or lower offset wheels.

Jason -> You say go for it. So do I, but I dont know if it will rub anywhere. :-)

Lummox -> Overtyred...? Hmm, i myself think the rim is wide enough. Have you looked at the pic? But how wide should the rim be, 7,5 or 8?

As i see it, the tyre is normally a little wider than the rim, or am i wrong?

`

I`m not going to buy new rims or spacers, so if I cant use 225, then i`ll have to settle with 215.

What wheels have you got, what width are they?

For a 225 tyre your looking at a min of a 7.5" width and a max of 9"

I have just been down checking, but didn`t find any numbers.

If you look at the picture above, that is with 205/45/16...so i would say the rim is 8,5.

I`m convinced the tyre will fit the rim, no problem.

My concern is scrubbing.

That rim in no way an 8.5 rim. 8.5" rims wont fit on a Fabia without some arch work.

Standard vRS wheels are 7" wide and has a 205 tyre on.

Hmmm ok.

Am i right in saying that a 7" rim is 177,8mm wide? (7 x 2.54)

If yes, then it shouldnt be a problem with a 225 tyre, as a 205 tyre is stretched on my rim.

Please correct me if im wrong.

If a tyre is too wide (a 225 will be on a 7" rim) then you'll pobably get the wheel moving side to side in the tyre..... other words it'll be pants to drive and will probably knacker the tyre....

Neily03 -> I fully understand what you are saying. But as i have written above, i would estimate my rim to be 8-8,5.

As Lummox had said there is no way your rim is 8" wide.... i'd say it was 7.5 at most but is most likely 7"

An 8" rim is very wide (escort cosworths have 16x8" wheels).

Hmmm, i must say that i don`t fully understand why you guys say it`s only 7".

7" is 7x2.54 = 177.8 Correct?

205 tyre is 205mm correct?

So when i tell you i have 205 tyres on now, and that i stretches the tyres. I would estimate the rim to be ca. 220mm wide, if i compare with the tyres.

Am i completely wrong here?

Take the wheel off and see if the wheel specification in on the inside. It is on my Octavia alloys.

225 for example isnt the width of the tyre, its the width of the cross section of the tread.

A little pic for you...

p82901243iv.jpg

Front 8x15 with 195 tyres on

Rear 9x15 with 215 tyres on

Just shows you how wide a 8" rim actually is.

What wheels do you have?

You wont get 225's on...

the tyre will foul the fuel filler in the drivers side rear wheelarch.

plus the handling will be rubbish

Ok, Lummox, ive just had a wheel off, and it is 7,5" wide.

My wheels are either Audi weels, or possibly copies from Melber. I dont really know as i got them 2. hand.

You mean the english driver side? So my passenger side..? :-)

But thats not good news. :-(

If thats a 7.5 rim then id say go with a 215 tyre, that shouldnt have any issues with the filler neck.

Hmm, ok. Ill do that. Dont wanna put too much strain on the 1.4 8v engine.:D

Thanks for all the answers guys.

Remember that extra rubber in contact with the road will introduce more resistance which will mean the engine has to work harder to overcome it and I'm not sure I'd subject a 1.4-8v engine to that!!! :D

Chris

I Know :D

But hey, it is so slow now, that i probably wouldnt notice if it became slower.

I think i will get a positive surprise when i put my 185/60/14 winter tyres on.

One has to suffer for beauty! :P
