Another passenger side airbag light thread.

Featured Replies

Hi folks seems a bit quiet in here... Just wondering if the broken cable error that seems to happen on a lot of Mark 1's is usually found on the seat side or the loom side. I have spare seats which seem to be operational so if I just swap a seat out we'll let potentially get rid of the warning light?

Thanks and advance

So I've taken the seat out but there is no loom underneath, does that mean the issue is the dashboard air bag??

Just found an older vagcom printout:

Address 15: Airbags Labels: 1J0-909-60x-VW3.lbl

Part No: 1J0 909 603 AS

Component: AIRBAG VW3 - V04

Coding: 16723

Shop #: WSC 31480

VCID: 7AADE4A8C5C81D7A197-4B9A

1 Fault Found:

00589 - Airbag Igniter 1; Passenger Side (N131)

32-10 - Resistance Too High - Int

ermittent

Is anybody able to help me work out how to fix this please?

Think the wiring for passenger airbag is behind glovebox. Yellow if I remember.

The connectors are usually good but check the wiring there. You could try and reset and see as sometimes its a random blip.

Meant to add you could try turning airbag off via the switch in glovebox if the MK1 has one. Mine is off on the MK2 and passed MOT ok.

As it was said, code N131 seems to be related to the front passenger airbag. Not certain, but you may have access to it by removing the glovebox in order to check it out.

An 'intermittent' fault could be related to an electrical connection: a broken or corroded wire, or a loose or corroded connector in the connecting plug. I would start by checking the loom and make sure that everything is secure. Also, I read somewhere that that same fault code was cleared by replacing the front passenger's airbag with a used one in a Golf Mk4.

I've been having a similar problem for quite a while in one of my MK1 Octavias, and I was able to narrow it down to the connections under the driver's seat, most probably the electrical plug:

01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N199)

32-10 - Resistance Too High - Intermittent

Needless to say that if the need arises to mess with airbags, always disconnect the battery beforehand.

I agree plus I wait for at least 30min before touching them. Mate was very lucky he wasnt hurt when trying to remove one in his steering wheel. He was under dash at the time but if had been in seat would have been a different outcome.

Also be very aware of and take precautions against static electricity discharge.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I've improved matters behind the glove box. The airbag light now goes off for a second before coming back on. Does that mean that's just the fault that needs clearing via software? Thanks all

Maybe or it could be the igniter in the airbag unit thats causing the problem. I would try and cancel codes and see if it come back. If its the igniter etc I would either get a new/second hand airbag or get a specialist check/repair. One on ebay for £12.94 Not sure if its the same as yours.
