Vented SMIC

Featured Replies

I vented my smic (a B & Q special). Before I could feel the ECU reduce the power esp on hot days. No the engine pulls cleanly and without hesitation.

I took a look at the SMIC pipe work and noticed that the pipe between the turbo and the smic is flattened. Are they any benefits for replacing this pipe?

How much of an increae in performance can be expected

Thanks for the help guys

braff :)

I've seen many VW owners replacing this pipe and they all say it's a waste of money. At least with the stock turbocharger you'll be better putting your money somewhere else.

The vent mod work very well. If you think you get hot days in the UK, imagine the difference i experienced after doing the mod here in the caribbean.

Its flattened but has the same volume so doesnt really reduce flow.

Thanks a lot guys.

Any pics of were in the wheel arch you vent?? as i would like to do it as well

How do you do it? What about the Insurance is it considred a mod?

Purchase a flush fitting vent (approx 8" long) from a hardware store (less than £5) and some short self tapping screws. You will need a stanley knife (or similar)

Take the right front wheel arch liner out and you will see the smic. Note the position of the intercooler in relation to the liner. The vent should be fitted on the intercooler side of the liner with the slotsprotruding through the liner.

Draw the outline of the slots (not the entire vent) and mark where the screws will go.

Cut the area out for the slots

Attach the vent and refit the wheel arch. For a neat job, cut the ends of the screws off.

There is a pic of one on the site. Do a search for intercoolers

There is a pic of the finish product in my earlier thread "smic"

Thanks for that...is the improvement worth the mess and hassle?

In traffic, if you put you hand outside the driver door you can feel the heat from the wheel well now that i vented the ic. That hot air is around the smic with no vent. Before I would feel the power back off if i accelerated briskly. Now it accelerates without hesitation.

There is no mess and it took 30 mins

Do you have an 'idiots guide' with pics? Would it work on my Octavia 1.8T Elegance?

Any point in doing this with an Octy TDI?

My octy is a 18T Elegance. This can be done on any Octy with a smic.
